Every single person in the video is now dead. That's always an eerie thought that comes to mind, whilst watching very early film-footage such as this.

It used to make me uncomfortable, but now it's like, what a privilege to have future people know you for enjoying the pleasures and experiences of the past. No bad associations with other people or bad hindsight for the future. just cake, slides, tiny trains and beautiful structures painfully short lived

you're comment is actually pretty accurate! walt disney did visit coney island prior to the creation of disneyland and was inspired by some of the rides (the teacups are the obvious carry-over and are actually in the new luna park). thanks for watching!

1:37 WOW a park would get in big trouble if they let that happen today. They truly did not give a fuck about safety at all in those days. Crazy footage.

@darthstarkiller1912 yes! the story is a restauranteer named charles feltman (who's restaurant stood where the new luna park/old astroland is) created them at coney island in the late 1800's (i'm a little unsure of the year). a former employee of his named nathan handwerker made then a bit more famous when he opened his eponymous hot dog stand, "nathan's" at coney island. thanks much for watching!

I notice something about these old videos... Seems like the adults were just as playful as the children... And times were harder back then it is today...you don't see adults act like this to much anymore :( to uptight!! The only adults who are playful like this now are usually very drunk..... Image if everyone was still this innocent

I watched a documentary many years ago and this incident was mentioned in it. This story always stuck with me, but it was a long time ago when I heard it so I may be wrong about some details; but basically what happened is the park at the time had animals as part of its attractions. One day, a handler was messing around with the elephant named Topsy. He put a cigar up her trunk. Topsy reared back in reaction and trampled the man. I don’t think he was killed, but needless to say, the heads of the theme park wanted to get rid of her after this. The thing is, having an elephant imported to the US is expensive, so they decided that if they were to kill her, they’d have to try and make some money from it, rather than just accept their losses. So they advertised her electrocution as a special event. It was filmed, and according to news outlets at the time, “the most humane killing of an animal”. I believe she was hung, electrocuted and shot at the same time to make her death as quick as possible. It’s really awful, particularly because Topsy was just defending herself from the handler who was being reckless, but she took the blame for it. It shocks me too that they made a day out of killing an elephant for onlookers to “enjoy”, but I guess that’s what the world was like back then :/

There was also a Luna park in WA for about 20 years, I think from the 60’s to the 80’s? It’s a lot lesser known though and I don’t think it did too well financially
