Coney Island: New York's Playground, Steeplechase Park & Luna Park

Ойын-сауық

In 1897, land owner George C. Tilyou opened Steeplechase Park. Steeplechase Park, a family-oriented amusement park, embraced the thrills of a horse race as its theme. It would eventually become the longest running amusement park in Coney Island history. With the success of Steeplechase, other itinerant amusements began to flourish in Coney Island.
In 1903, Coney Islands next great park rose on the north side of Surf Avenue, Coneys main thoroughfare. Luna Park portrayed a fantastical vision of a trip to the moon. In an age when electricity was considered a luxury, Luna Park was bedecked by thousands of lights which made it glow at night.

What a time that must have been - dangerous rides, no fear of lawsuits and dressing up to go to the amusement park. Fabulous post - thank you.

coney island will never loose it nostalgia. the cyclone and wonder wheel will forever remain. coneys true downfall is when they built public housing units through out the island. thats when it turned into any ghetto nyc. damn shame

I was the last paying customer to ever go there in 1962. Many fond memories of the place. My favorite ride was the whirlpool.

@SwankyCub thank you for watching! though its main setting is another amusement park, you may want to check out kevin baker's book "Dreamland". it creates an exceptionally vivid picture of coney island "back in the day".

I have been going to CI since the early 70's, it has such a unique feel to it, as much as the great city its in. Unfortunately there are plans to redevelop the area, its smaller sister park, Astroland, is no more. But it has everything an old time amusement park should have, the beach ,Nathan's hot dogs, freak shows and easy access.

Love the video. Its sad not too many amusement parks like this one exist nowadays. The music, I believe, sung by Billy Murray and the Haydn Quartet is from 1905. Love the music and the way it helps tell the story from long ago. Never been to Steeplechase Park or even Coney Island. I could, however, see myself back in those times having one too many Nathan's hot dogs though. :)

Plenty are still around. I have extensive knowledge of the amusement industry, so if you tell me the general area that you live in, I will tell you parks in the area (I'll keep it to a three hour drive or less, excluding traffic.)
