LUMIX S5 II - In depth review & cinematic sample footage

My Panasonic LUMIX S5 II review is finally here!
Here are my thoughts on this full-frame camera, covering everything from picture quality, IBIS, autofocus, 6K open gate and it's form factor. The review contains a tonne of cinematic sample footage and considers whether you should buy or upgrade to the new LUMIX S5 mark 2. Most importantly, as a long term LUMIX S5 user, I'll be revealing whether I myself will be upgrading to this camera.

    Thanks for the awesome review and captures! Was on the fence for getting a S5II as I need a second body along my S5. But none of what bugs me a little from the S5 has "really" improved. - IBIS is better but the lesser stabilisation from the S5 renders somewhat more natural mouvements. - Moiré/Aliasing is still present. - Autofocus is a lot better but not something I'd rely on. The things I really like are not worth the switch. - Full HDMI I can do without (I have clamped my micro HDMI to a full HDMI and it lives on my cage) - Sychroscan is the only thing I really want. Flickering can be a real pain in the ass while doing corpo work.

    Great review. I especially agree with your last point about waiting to see what else Panasonic have planned. Ultimately I would love for them to create a full frame version of the GH5S. Lower megapixel count geared for video, good rolling shutter performance. Basically like the A7SIII.

  • @EdProsser

    @EdProsser

    Yeah I think since moving to the Komodo I've noticed the slower sensor readout / rolling shutter of the S5 a lot more - if they release an S1H successor I really hope it's something with a drastically reduced rolling shutter. But to be fair, this is a sub £2K camera - so can't knock it really, it's amazing value for money!

    Always appreciated how well thought out the videos are and this must have taken some time. Thx so much for that. I understand that these reviews are designed to feature a single camera but the comments are really helped when referenced to other cameras eg Komodo or SH1 and in terms of image quality it might have been interesting to see how it compares to the Eva and whether this could be a single operator camera re audio etc. Likewise a comparison to the Fuji XH2S and maybe the FX3, not so much in terms of image but in use and workflow. Hard to tell much about the image here as I think you favour adding a fair amount of grain to the image and it did seem maybe a litle distracting though maybe you were compensating for the perceived sharpness isssue that you mentioned. As you say tonnes of other reviews out there to check. Great to hear the EF compatability which is always an issue with the native mount and auto focus. Agree that the S1H is the real deal at a pro level (netflix approved) but for many the question always seems to be whether to go canon, Sony, or other (BMPCC6K Pro) when it comes to dslr, or sub £4K and for pro work in general it is fair to say that Sony probably rules. Again a comparison with C70 or Komodo images would have been great and the point about the rolling shutter was well made and often overlooked especially when using gimbals or favouring hand held. I guess we will all be waiting for the S1H ii to appear but IMO the BMPCC6K image and workflow still has to be a bench mark that needs to be significantly blown away by any new camera release and I am not sure that the S1H managed to be better in terms of image though it was considerably more a hybrid experience, also full frame, anamorphic open gate and batteries etc, so it will be interesting to see if its just an autofocus upgrade raher than an image upgrade. The S1H can be worth it for the EVF alone for those who shoot that way but flawed autofocus always seems to make it the poorer cousin to canon and sony. Maybe not now. That said the the lack of EVF in the FX3 and C70 has always seemed bizarre to me if they trying to be professional cine cameras and not hybrid. Having to buy an expensive third party zacuto isnt always possible but it is an absolute essential for DOPs in general and that is the often unspoken genius of dslr design in that they have a build in EVF. ??? Meanwhile thanks so much for the video and the continuing valued thoughts.

    Yes totally get your point, although I don't have access to all those cameras - and I do feel sometimes camera reviews can get bogged down in endless comparisons between cameras - as a smaller channel (and spare time KZreadr) I don't currently have the time or resources to do that... I think channels like CVP are always better placed to do the more technical break downs. What I hope I can offer is a more personal perspective as a working professional who uses this type of kit in my day to day work and show what it's capable (or not capable) of doing. When I approach my reviews I don't want to repeat what others have already said - as I see that happening a lot. Having said that - I did actually do a quick test shot between S5, S5ii, FX6, EVA1 and Komodo - unfortunately the footage from the S5 and S5ii disappeared (it must not have imported and I later wiped the card, that's the issue of trying to squeeze YT into my small pockets of spare time). I do still have the comparison shots between the other cameras which I'll probably post in the next month.

    @@EdProsser hey thanks for that and I totally understand. I guess the question many people have in their minds when looking at KZread camera or gear pieces might be Ok I have the money to buy a camera or a light or some lenses so what should I buy and how will it add value. Fomo also plays its part. No one wants to get left behind if there’s a revolution going on. There are so many great pieces of kit but professionals are perhaps expected to have the inside scoop on gear that really works not so much gear that could work. I have the same questions rolling around in my head constantly since the day I started filming and it really comes down to what is the rig that allows me to shoot professionally. In truth that has always been unaffordable and rental has always been the solution I have resorted to but we are now in the world of content creators owner operators and the margins between a dslr and cine camera is narrowing but not without compromises which might not be obvious to the inexperienced. What lens is worth picking up? A sigma 24-70mm with IS and auto focus or a set of Leica Rs?? I guess the way in is to see images that look great, admittedly on KZread but that are also made by an affordable set up and ideally in an innovative way or maybe analyse the pros with shotdeck and bts and work out what really is making the difference. Ironically the pros won’t know. When you are surrounded by gear the last thing you do is spend time thinking about doing without. The 5d and Sony A7sii scared them all and allowed a revolution as did the BMPCC4K at an affordable price suddenly amazing shallow dof isolation of the subject, low light and wysiwyg filmic images that a lot of cinematographers in film looked enviously at. Didn’t need a 10 man crew to hump the camera and grip. Gimbal drones and mini sliders allowed production values to go off the charts for newbies when it came to camera movement and it made the 4 man crew pushing a dolly on a track look ridiculous. Yet so many of us are still looking for a cheap dolly shot push in that really nails it like a pro with crew yet done by a single owner operator. Creativity could maybe be measured by and be directly proportional to how easy it is to shoot at no cost and so the owner operator is king if the rig they have isn’t a professional compromise. Does that mean buying an easyrig?? Maybe. Or lights c stands a tonne of flags and rags. Soon it’s a van and a whole other grip truck with generators to be managed. Or is using a dslr with ibis great auto focus and a high quality evf enough to nail focus, all Netflix approved for a push in and shoot all day like a pro. For sure the fx6 and c70 feel like proper cameras but no evf??! No decent monitor solution?! no sdi?? They are not the solution. Would an Eva ii be?? The c300iii with a £3k canon evf is probably close but way over priced as an ef solution so even with its price drop two years too late, maybe the new c200ii will be what we have all been waiting for. Not sure if the Eva was ever right for you and maybe the Komodo is doing the trick but I would be interested to know what your ideal set up would be or maybe you have it. For sure it’s not always an Alexa. Thanks for all your thoughts and feedback.

Special thanks for your work with color, real science of color. Only one issue that bothered me a lot is the lack of the OLPF, because the moire in videos is ruining everything for me. But again, the price point and compromises (the rolling shutter, crop in ff 60fps, lack of the olpf, slight delay on external monitor via hdmi cable) are inevitable. And it’s still a good camera.

    Great review Ed! I had been waiting for something like this from Lumix - I started out on Lumix, shot a bunch of weddings on the S1 before moving over to Sony for the last few years. I ended up missing a lot about the S1, but wasn't ready to give up autofocus. I ordered an S5ii as soon as it was announced and started making the move back to Lumix, adding a bunch of lenses and an S1 as a spare, but after challenging myself to work with manual focus I've been enjoying the S1 more than the S5ii - the stabilisation on the S5ii can get a bit wonky sometimes, and it's ruined a few shots, while the S1 is more controlled. Both are great cameras though, and it's nice to have the flippy screen and solid autofocus in some situations.

    Yeah I recently used the S1 to shoot with some Anamorphics, great camera! Glad the AF on the S5ii has been helping you with your work, sounds like a good pairing! I had a while section in here about annoying manual focus more but cut it for time, I'll probably spin it into its own video. What is it you prefer on LUMIX cameras to Sony?

  • @jon.parsons

    @jon.parsons

    @@EdProsser There's a few big things that bugged me with the Sony gear - the HDMI feed doesn't fill the monitor screen if you want info displayed, which I always do. That made the manual focus experience pretty crumby. I also found the IBIS to be too jittery or grabby, and it often ruined my shots. A few other things like ergonomics and codec limitations just made it feel like a clunky chore. In the end, I enjoy the user experience of Lumix, and the tools they provide show that they're really catering to video professionals. I'm in love with the colours too - there's a better separation between greens and skin tones, which makes for a cleaner grade, and the IBIS is so smooth. It all adds up to a more organic feeling video output.

    great video! I'm dying to try this camera out. When coming from a S5 mk1 to a mk2, the trade in value is still quite good, depending where you go. To me I can tell Panasonic invested so much in the ibis and color science, and now with the phase detect It puts them ahead of Sony in terms of overall workflow (vlog is a joy to work with). Will you try the S2x when it comes out?

    I might - although for me it's mostly an addition of tech specs (recording codecs and RAW) - so I'm not super interested in doing a video on it - unless people really want my take on it - I'm sure a lot of KZreadrs will give a good low down on it. I think if I were choosing between the two I might opt for the S5 iix - as it's only a couple of hundred £££ more and the features seem worth it!

    Thanks for your video and all the great looking footage. I do have a point or two to mention. The S5II does much more than AF. I really love to shoot fully manual myself with 3rd party lenses. But until the S5II I've never been able to manually focus, start recording, move my focus box, punch in while recording, and perform a focus pull. That's right. Panasonic fixed that as well, which is extremely important when you're shooting manual focus. There are other things too you can do while rolling--can't think of them right now.

    Great review Ed. I also have the camera. I'm curious if you ever tried any scenes with multiple people using AF. Thus far it seems the camera likes to bounce around and in say a tracking shot where multiple people might be in the frame it can struggle to stick with one.

  • @EdProsser

    @EdProsser

    Жыл бұрын

    I did a little - I did find this - but it did also depend on the AF mode I had it set to and the position of camera / framing - I shot in a busy market and it did jump from people to people - but not in a problematic way, I also turned down the sensitivity and that helped a bit. If you're wanting to track just one person you could set it in tracking mode. I think what I learnt is that a powerful AF system is definitely a tool you need to test and master to get the best out of it - and there are certain settings that suit different shooting environments better.

    Been looking forward to this review from you since FOREVER. I shoot on the Panasonic EVA-1 & Panasonic S1 combo but always found the Panasonic S1 tedious for gimbal work. I do quite a few events shoot and sometimes shoot exclusively on gimbal. Since the release of the S5ii I've been thinking really hard. I know my current camera setup is all I need in terms of image quality wise. But I think I will go ahead and ahead, the quality of life improvement will be worth it. Question, are you using the Tamron 24-70 G1 or G2 version?

  • @EdProsser

    @EdProsser

    I think if you can afford it and the AF will make your life easier - go for it! Definitely know what it's like to compromise on jobs and sometimes just having an easier workflow makes life less stressful and frees you up to be more creative. I was using the G1 as I picked it up very cheap years ago for run and gun doc work. I may pick up the sigma 24-70 at some point. But yeah really surprised at how well it worked whilst being adapted.

    @@EdProsser to go off of Jeffery's question. Have you had a chance to compare the Tamron's autofocus and stabilization vs Non-adapted glass? I'm currently trying to decide between using the Tamron 24-70 G2, Lumix 24-105, or Sigma 24-70. Ideally, I'd love to use the Tamron for low light + stabilization. But if it doesn't compete with the 24-105's stabilization/ autofocus then I might lean a different way.

    @@LaurenceLee I am on the same boat as you. I bought the 24-105 earlier last month and while I find it extremely versatile from shooting livestreams to events, I find the the F4 quite limiting despite the native 4000 of the S cameras. I also find that I would really love the bokeh I can get from an F2.8 zoom. However, the stabilization is really super amazing. If the image is really your priority, get the 2.8 zooms. I am on the fence on whether to go with native zooms or EF zooms. I love the manual focusing on the EF zooms and can't seem to get used to the electronic focus on the Panasonic S 50 1.8. I find that I miss focus very easily especially on moving subjects when I'm on manual focus. CHOICES CHOICES

    Great review! I've got my S5II one week ago. But what I've noticed in my video footage with activated IBIS are these crazy wobble-effects of the moving sensor in the left and right corner of the image. It even occurs when standing completely still. In your shots, this effect is hardly visible. What do you do differently 😅?

  • @EdProsser

    @EdProsser

    Жыл бұрын

    Hmm interesting, I definitely noticed some wobble / jello on certain scenes - it may be your IBIS settings - definitely worth checking. I think also on wider shots you might get more of the wobble effect, so focal lengths below 35mm? Also what lens are you using? Sometimes if you have IS on a lens and IBIS on the camera at the same time they can fight each other. If it's an un-stabilised, manual lens - are you dialing in the focal length into the IBIS system? I have to do that on my Vespids. Also might be the way you use camera and the types of scenes you shoot. Wider shots with long vertical lines such as those with lots of buildings etc will probably show this more!

    Hey Joe - I don't shoot weddings or events so not super clued up on this, I mainly ahoot on manual focus lenses the DZOFilm Vespids so only own the LUMIX S 50mm. I'd imagine 1 or 2 decent zooms a 24-70 and then maybe a 70-200 and perhaps a few decent primes? Sigma make decent L mount lenses and there are also the LUMIX S range of primes. LUMIX also do some zooms. Josh Cameron has just put out a vid on his channel about his fav L mount lenses, he really rates the Sigma L 28-70.

    Excellent video -I really enjoy your work and ability to make reviews. I’m struggling with a decision to switch systems to Lumix and torn between the regular and X version. And would love your opinion here. This will be my personal kit for family and personal projects plus photography- I use a couple C70’s for my day job and R6 for photo. With that being said, I’m hard pressed not to go for the biggest quality codecs the X offers, but convincing myself the S5ii video will be just fine in Long GOP even with it limited to the 200mbps. As of now, the sale prices for S5ii ends up being a little over $400 USD cheaper than the X. Which is significant. Your original S5 footage blew me away and still makes me think I don’t “need” those super high recording rates. What’s your thought here? Think I’ll regret not just doing the X? Thank you!

    Check back here in an hour as my iiX review is about to go live! I think if it's for personal work and family stuff, the S5 mk2 will do just fine! The biggest draw of the iiX is probably the BRAW and Pro Res functionality... but unless you're pumping out professional projects the more compressed codecs will still serve you well!

    Indeed the S5II looks sharper than the S5 in V-Log but not in a good way. The difference is not night day though. However the standard profiles are much worse than on the S5. The noise reduction and details filtering kills very fine details in low light, I made a comparison about this issue on my channel. I thought it was because of the Phase Detect but V-Log has not this issue so I hope Panasonic will fix this soon.
