    The GH6 was a huge upgrade from my GH3. I've been using a combination of AF and manual focus. I'll be keep the GH6 for awhile. It has so many good features. I just wish they would make a bigger flip screen.

    @@RhettThompsonFilm I was also hunting for a GH5S, but managed to buy a new GH5 mk2 for less than half the price. So far I've been using the G85 as my main camera and the GX850 as a pocket EDC. At the moment, I'm overwhelmed by the number of options and extensive menus of the GH5m mk2. I've been battling in my mind between the GH6 and the SONY FX30, and the fact that I own a lot of MFT glass has prompted me to stick with the Panasonic. I don't regret it :)

    I'm intrigued by the 100MP ultra high res mode. I would like to see the identical photo taken without it, and then progressively zoom in side by side in your video so we can see what it really means to have 100mp. Would also be great to see a poster print of each to compare the difference in print. Since I am getting into photography (GH5 and GH5s owner) this is surprisingly the main mode that I feel like I wish I had access to. Great to see the price getting smashed down.

    If you email me in my about section I can send you some files if that might help! The actual detail from 25 to 100 is really impressive in many situations but handheld some situations don’t work. It’s also nice that it takes one 25 and one 100 so if the 100mp is messed up or just fails which it does occasionally you still have one decent shot

Mainly shoot at 4096x2160, 60p, ProRes at 1.3 GBS (for 20 second b-roll clips battery life is not an issue) .... in the field you can use inconspicuous lenses. Sometimes I shoot at 5.8k ....

    To me the selling point of this camera is its versatility. You can use it as for almost anything - except for that which requires fast and precise autofocus :) But other than that, this unit can be used for everything from casual street jpgs to raw-enabled professional commercial or cinema video and everything in between (including numerous anamorphic settings). The myriad of formats it can shoot in make it great for a diverse set of clients and/or artistic needs. The VFR features are often left out of the discussion but provide a great on-the-spot slow motion or hyper lapse abilities all in camera. Open gate, 100mp images, 4k 120 10bit internal, VFR, amazing color science, industry leading IBIS. I mean yeah, there are cameras that can perform certain functions better than this unit. But at this price point, I am not sure there are many that can do everything as well as this little amazing guy can do.

    The GH6 is currently the best option for high frame rate video at a reasonable price. 5.7k video is actually 3 times the pixels of 4k, so that's good when you need to place a camera at an event and crop in post to simulate camera moves with an unmanned camera. DR Boost is good for video, but somehow, the GH5M2 has MORE dynamic range in photos, even above ISO800, at least according to PhotonsToPhotos. This is the only real disappointment I have with the camera.

    I finally pulled the trigger and bought a GH6 on Cyber Monday... today I returned it. I watch videos like this and wonder if I got an extremely defective model. After a few days of filming tests, and a day of documentary shooting with it - the "Streaking problem" is a real deal breaker, and makes the camera extremely unreliable. I had streaking show up in the typical dark room with a window... but I also had it show up in daytime exterior shots. It showed up way more often than I anticipated. One shot was an exterior documentary interview with the subject standing in front of a highway overpass - each time the man moved to reveal the sky peaking through the overpass behind him, the streaking issue would flicker onto the screen. In other daytime shots, specular highlights from the sun reflecting off metal in the background would cause the streaking. I hoped that the streaking issue was being overblown, and exaggerated for clickbait, but my experience was even worse than some of the videos and articles I read. This camera should not have been released like this. I certainly would not trust it on a paid gig, and now I'm forced to deal with some shots that have streaks in them for one of my own short docs because I chose to test the camera on an actual shoot. I really wanted to like this camera - the IBIS was great, the 120fps, four channels of audio... I have a GH5S with a power switch hanging on by a thread, so was excited for the opportunity to upgrade - but I guess I'm sticking with that for now.

    Well-said and presented. I've had some questions about the photos mode in that mine seems to produce green pixels when I increase the blacks. I'm using PhotoLab 5, but it is curious. Also, I've noticed this camera is not ISO invariant. You need to shoot more like the final image, again for photos. I just don't feel like it's a 14bit camera for that... maybe I'm wrong and I'd personally like more info if you have any. I just got it during the Black Friday deals at a huge discount.

    I have used the GH6 since it came out. I have a GH5 and before that came out, a GH4, so I have good experience using these cameras. What I noticed with the photography side of the GH6 is that, I like the higher resolution and the colors seem better than on the GH5. However, I get inconsistent results when it comes to shadow noise. I always shoot in RAW, usually with flat profile. In some photos at ISOs between 100-400, I get low noise in shadows, but other times, they appear noisy and I usually overexpose without clipping highlights, to bring up shadow detail to avoid over noisy shadows. I have tried higher ISOs and I have just got noisier photos. With the 16-bit RAW container files, you can overexpose and there is enough room to bring back highlight detail in editing unless it is overexposed too much. On my GH5, I can just set it to low ISOs and in good lighting and daylight, I can get consistently low noise in the shadows, not the same as the GH6. I have tried taking 100MP Hi-Res mode photos both handheld and on a tripod and more often than not, I find the 100MP photos look a bit soft compared to the 25MP photos. I have used it to shoot landscapes and sometimes I have found artefacts in places, even in areas where there was no movement of the subject, such as the edges of contrasty subjects, like a fence with a bright sky in the background, so I haven't found that mode useful yet. I mostly use my GH6 for video and have shot a lot of videos with it using V-Log, mostly with DR Boost ON and IS 2000. I expose properly (42 IRE on waveform for midtones according to Panasonic) I don't get that much noise in shadows in daylight scenes and it is easy to clean up in editing with good results (I use Neat Video in Premiere Pro). I mostly shoot in 4K, but I still don't understand why Panasonic in firmware updates, added ProRes in all resolutions except UHD. I don't use autofocus, I mostly set the initial focus with the AF button and adjust manually. I also use the Pixel to Pixel crop option sometimes and have found it useful for getting a little extra reach when necessary, without having to change lenses and reframe my shot. The one thing I have noticed in video is to do with landscape and wide angle detail. For the videos I am working on, I need a lot of wide angle landscape shots and I have noticed with these, the detail isn't as good and maybe even a little soft compared to what I have seen from some other cameras, even the GH5 V-Log L looked a little sharper and a little more detailed. Its not the lenses I use as I use an Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO and Panasonic Leica 9mm f/1.7 and both are sharp lenses. I have used 5.8K with markers on the screen and in editing, I was able to take 16:9 crop out of the video and end up with a 5K video which is useful if you want more detail than 4K but in 16:9. I don't shoot in 5.7K ProRes yet as while it has a bit more detail (especially after cleaning up the slightly noisier shadows in editing) as I can't afford the storage due on one of my 128GB cards, I get between 10 and 20 or so minutes depending on the quality and I usually shoot 2 or so hours of footage at a time. I record my video audio with a Sennheiser ME66/K6 on top of the camera on a shockmount, plugged into my Tascam DR 701D audio recorder. Initially I thought the fan noise would be noticeable on the recordings since the ME66 is a very sensitive mic, but unless the fan is set to high, I have not noticed the fan noise on any of my audio recordings. For powering the camera, I have powered the GH6 using a Anker USB PD power bank battery for 5 hours and still had a lot of the battery life left, so this is much better than having to carry around multiple batteries for an all day shoot like I did with my GH5.

    It is also because of the noise reduction, it is high on this camera. You can add all the sharpening you want you will just get weird textures because details are already smoothed out. The only mode without too much noise reduction or details processing is Pixel to Pixel, the crop is 1.5x so the video is very noisy but looks like film grain.

  • @DynamixWarePro

    @DynamixWarePro

    Жыл бұрын

    @@aiseurnae5976 I was thinking it could be part of it. ProRes uses less noise reduction than the ALL-I or IPB codecs, so the footage has a bit more detail and is a little sharper, but also a little more noisy so you could be right. I shot an entire video in 4K Pixel to Pixel, not realising I wasn't in Full mode and I noticed the footage was a bit more noisier. I don't think the footage looked that much more sharper though.

  • @DynamixWarePro

    @DynamixWarePro

    @@catattackcat8754 I have been thinking about the issue. I think it could be partly to do with the smaller pixels on the GH6 possibly causing detraction to set in at wider apertures than other MFT cameras that max out around 20MP, however I think diffraction might start to set in aperatues narrower than f/6.3 on the GH6 but not sure, so that might not be the issue. It might also be lenses might not be sharp enough for the higher MP sensor. It could also be that there is more noise reduction being applied in the Panasonic codecs. One reason I am thinking that, is with ProRes codecs on the GH6, the footage looks a bit sharper but also a bit noisier as ProRes applies less noise reduction. Some of my wide angle footage I shot in full sensor mode in 4K (Not pixel to pixel) in daylight of landscapes, I found unusably soft as if it was almost a bit out of focus but wasn't. It might be my variable ND filter I was using that may be adding some softness. I was using a NiSi Variable ND Filter ND-VARIO 5-9 Stops (1.5 - 2.7) in daylight when my other filter, a Nisi Variable ND 1-5 stops (0.3-1.5) didn't go dark enough. When I have used the Nisi Variable ND 1-5 stops (0.3-1.5) the footage seems to look OK if I add a little sharpness in editing. I was unable to test if the filter was adding any softness as the footage was too bright with the brighter filter.

    @@DynamixWarePro Someone mentionned the digital moire filter, I found an explanation from Panasonic : "The Processing eliminates the need for a low-pass filter and smooths fine details like hair and wires to minimize moiré patterns". It's partly because of this that the GH6 looks softer and this is why you need very sharp lenses on the GH6 to get the most details as possible. But there is also noise reduction going on because the noise structure is altered. You can test to see the difference in photo (raw) and video, you will see there is more noise in photo because the video uses noise reduction. Prores is a bit better than H265 (ALL-I and IPB) because we can see a bit more noise but there is still dynamic noise reduction going on. The Pixel to Pixel is noisier because it use a crop (1.5x) but the grain seems nicer than full mode (less altered) so I think there is less noise or details processing.

  • @aiseurnae5976

    @aiseurnae5976

    Жыл бұрын

    @@DynamixWarePro It is not diffraction because my fast lenses are softer on the GH6, even more when they are wide open. I think the softness comes from the digital moire filter, it is worse in low light because noise reduction destroys even more fine details, and adding sharpness is not a good idea because the altered details and noise are more noticeable. The GH5 and G9 use more sharpening in video but don't destroy fine details like the GH6, it's partly why the GH6 looks good about noise performance in video for m43.

    Rhett, great video, I appreciate the honesty and proper rundown. The handling noise from your audio recorder... Oh man, there was a lot. See if you can put the microphone stand on something so the vibrations don't get to the mic. At present I've got the G9, G7, EM 10 MK III, E-PL9, ZV-1 and ZV-E10. I want to have 3 studio cameras for video and would really like one to double as a proper photo camera. In this regard Sony sucks in APSC and I don't really want to go full frame in terms of size. This leaves me with GH6 or OM-1 or jumping into the XT-5 or possibly the XH-2. I'm looking to sell the old gear, keep the 2 Sony's and the G9. So G9 vs GH6, is there any point as far as photo? I feel like the ZV-E10 is my video camera regardless on account of the AF and it's almost exclusively in a studio. Would really appreciate some of your expert input. Thanks 👍

    Hard to say really. Ive often said if I was to start over from scratch I would either do panasonic again or Fuji, especially if I did more photography. I have never owned a G9 but honestly its unclear if the GH6 would be an upgrade. Its apparently got slightly worse noise and less DR than the G9 as well as slower burst speeds but it does have an extra 25% more megapixels, the fastest autofocus and lots of fun modes like the 100mp mode and a 75fps burst. Ive shot some really nice photos with the GH6 despite it being video first. Personally whatever you do, I would try and get on to one manufacturer so the colors and other stuff matches but thats just my prefreance. You could probably get a XT4-5 and a few XT3s for a decent price although you gotta be carful of the Fuji lenses with some performing much better than others. A couple GH5s or more G9s if thats not too much money. I would also keep to one mount so the S5 or S1 probably isnt the best bet either. I dont know, lots to thing on here. Not sure if other GH6 user found the same issue. GH6 sensor is a serious dust magnet. The dust was simply so annoying in video that I bought a STC protector clip filter. After I installed the clip filter, I found that dust still found its way onto the sensor. I have GH1, GH2, GH4, GH5, and now GH6. I have never seen dust to be such a major problem in its predecessor. This is absolutely unusual. I wonder if it was the cooling system that brought dust into the camera.

    I had two GH5s and I was looking for a third camera. I was trying to choose between the GH6 and the GH5 Mk2. I chose the GH5 Mk2. I am pretty happy. I am impressed with the improved auto focus. I was excited with the USB charging, but the camera quit on a professional shoot. Even though the USB battery had lots of power the internal battery was dead and the camera would not stay on. Now I power the camera with a V mount.

    I had no experience in miceo 4/3 coming from S35 camera for my work. When i saw the specs i bought it. Big deception: -boost dynamic range is unnoticeable -the iso is unusable for any serious video work above 1600 - 2000. It get worse with high frame rate codecs when you lose some light again -the battery life is realy trash, i used 3 full batteries for an average lenght concert on 4k 30p... -the autofocus is garbage (but i knew it) becaus it is UNRELIABLE. Yes it sometimes work but when it doesn't you can't use it. It's not a feature because i was in manual mode every day -it's freaking expensive Switched for an S1. Yes i miss the high frame rate... In 4k. That's all, because it has 180fps in hd. But come ON i can go to 20000 iso and i have less noise than the gh6 on 1200! And the price? M43 is supposed to be cheaper! But it was the double i payed for my FF! Lighter? The sensibility and iso are so bad i had to use speedbooster and ef ff lenses anyway to get a decent job done, the m43 lenses are so badly designed it's unusable in manual mode, but you CAN'T USE IT IN AUTO. I guess it's a descent photo camera, i get it. But... Do you realy need this for photo. Like... Realy...it's expensive for so few. It's an expensive bad video camera with amazing and flashy specs. Because it is unreliable, because it lacks any form of polyvalence. Because you probably don't need 4k120p. And if you need it, there are chances you can afford an a7s3 or something

It is not even close to their autofocus abilities. And to extend further my comment form before, to compare a 2022 camera like GH6 to a already old camera like G9 (2017), doesn’t make sense. I don't think the GH6 is far superior than the G9. I've used almost every Panasonic cameras from the GH3 to the S5. The GH6 is a good camera but photo dynamic range is not as good as the G9, the 4K full mode is soft in low light because of too much noise reduction and digital detail filter, the 5,7k is sharper but again the noise reduction kills fine details and the image just looks weird. The 100MP is sometimes very good and sometimes full of glitches. The AF is good but nowhere as good as my A7RIV, in fact my A7III has still better AF than my GH6. The S5 is far better if you don't need the 4K slowmotion. The great thing about the GH6 is the improved color science.

    So what you're saying is this: Gerald was right. You ignored him because you didn't like what he had to say, and thought he was "too negative." Funny thing about reviewing gear is that the NEGATIVES are often more important than the positives. Also funny, DP Journey was even MORE negative about the GH6 since he refused to review it at all because of the streaking problem...a problem that you have in fact run into and causes concern. I just don't get it. I think it would make more sense for you to upload a video explaining your thought process, where you went wrong, and how you might be wiser in the future. I'm sure many people could gain insight about their own biases that way.

  • @RhettThompsonFilm

    @RhettThompsonFilm

    I’d watch the video again since you’re pretty close but missing the point. The point was, every issue Gerald and DP talked about is valid BUT look at their line of work. Gerald is a KZreadr not just mostly but 100%. He tests in a controlled specific studio environment, he shoots content by himself, and he has access to tons of free cameras that to normal people are 2-4x or more expensive than the GH6. It’s a matter of perspective and practical usability that is totally missing in his video. A 2000 camera with 4k120 no additional crop, cinema features, 5.7k 60 and very very decent dynamic range and IQ falls short of a 5000 dollar Sony full frame? YEA NO KIDDING, that was never the point of the camera.
