There's so much negativity about "how hard it is to live as new immigrant" now.. Thanks for emphasizing that life was always challenging and they also faced the same challenges like the new ones here.

It's is a milestone for many Filipinos who immigrated to Canada in the early 70s. The 70s was the decade for many Filipinos to immigrate to Canada other than the US. Today census identifies Filipinos are third ranking minorities across Canada..

I came in 1969. The struggles of the recent newcomers are no different from what we went through when we first arrived. We bought our first home in 1975 for $34000. Got it paid for in 5 years time.

While I agree that the struggles of recent newcomers are no different throughout the years, we cannot downplay that the cost of adjusting to a new environment is exponentially more now compared to before. Taking your situation for example, you bought a house for $34000 in 1975 which is equivalent to $198,549 in today's money. It is so much easier to pay it off in 5 years as the gap in home prices vs annual salary is low. Compare that to the current national average cost of a house in Canada at $730600, it is much harder to acquire a property these days, coupled with the high cost of living, high interest rate and relatively low salary which does not leave people with a lot of disposable income to invest in real estate. In other words, achieving the Canadian dream is much easier back in the day and it is not comparable to what newcomers have to manage these days.

wow, 50 years in Canada, we are only halfway to how long they were here, but we have a similar experience as them coming as independent immigrants in 1998. great to hear stories like theirs...

They look good for a young adult couple who started life in Canada in 1976. Talagang nasa state of mind saka disposition sa buhay ng isang tao - will determine failure or sucess. Thank you Ina for stories you feature. 😊I also wish you sucess for your family’s new life in Canada.

talagang mabilis mag-appreciate ang bahay. back in 1995 i bought my first house in San Jose, Ca (one of the most expensive city in USA)for only US$188k. i upgraded twice from one house to another and in the course of 10yrs i earned an equity of about US$700k. then i moved to Seattle, Wa. bought a house for US$500k and it earned US$600k in 13 yrs. after that i moved again here in Richmond BC in 2014 and bought a townhouse for CAD$430k. now its valued at about CAD$1.1M after 10yrs.

I have relatives who landed in Toronto in 1950s via USA; Calgary in early 1960s & Winnipeg in late 1960s. My parents in early 1970s, said economy then was "ups & downs" as in get fired today then a new job the next day then there were years of jobless too. Overall, common sense, it was harder at jobs & school because there were not too many Pinoys back then for guidance etc. It's about time to ask these original guys Ina instead of focusing on new guys who are just seeing the tip of the iceburg.

Both had the credentials going into Canada. Engineer and nurse. Yes, its true that back in the seventies, filipino immigrants had it so easy. The homes were affordable. Jobs were plentiful as long as you had your under graduate degree. Perhaps, the recent influx of immigrants are not as highly qualified as your guests.
