Luminosity Masks Are Child's Play Compared to This!

The Evolution of Luminosity Masks
I love Luminosity Masks, I have been using them for ages, and they have been an integral part of my workflow. Before we get too far into this post, I want to clarify that I have nothing against the Traditional Luminosity Mask and there is definitely a place for them in Photoshop. But, there is always a but, I have recently discovered a new use for a common tool that makes the traditional Luminosity Mask as you have known it look a little foolish.
Over the last several years, I have been experimenting with Blend If. If you have followed me from at least 2014, you will have seen the plethora of ways I use it in my workflow. What you haven't seen is how many countless hours of research I have spent trying to evolve the Luminosity Mask into a Blend If Mask. It has been a grueling process but, I finally did it, and I incorporated it into the Zone System Express 6.
Why did I do all this research?
Well, I was explaining ice to my five-year-old. He found it fascinating that water could freeze into more shapes than an ice cube and it was quite funny trying to watch him put large chunks of ice into a cup after they had frozen together. You may have done this too, a large grouping of ice cubes gets lumped together and you try to put it into a cup and all you do is make a mess.
Something clicked when I saw that and it made me think of a Luminosity Mask that had been made on one image and used on another. It is a clunky piece of ice. BUT Blend If is fluid and changes as the "vessel" changes.
What I mean by this is that a Luminosity Mask is a mask that is frozen for the item it is made on. Sure you can alter the mask with levels, but the mask is still meant for that image. Blend If, however, works on pixel values and not pixel masks. So anything under a blend if layer will be altered by their pixel values and not necessarily the mask created for them.
This discovery opens a lot of gates in post-production, especially with the new advancements in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom and the ability to make LUT profiles.
How are these Blend If Masks better? (all explained in the video, but here it is for those who like to read)
They are entirely non-destructive and do not make pixel masks but use pixel values to turn on or off the effect that is being applied. This makes them much easier to modify than traditional Luminosity Masks and much more accurate.
The layer that has Blend If applied to it can be pulled from one image and placed onto the next and it will know what pixels to "turn on and off" and will make the "mask" accordingly. So you can do a bunch of layers with Blend If settings on them, then transfer them to another image and they will make the same effect without the hard edge of the traditional Luminosity Mask.
You can use these Blend If functions for RAW level editing when you turn them into a LUT in Photoshop then make a LUT profile in ACR. This can dramatically increase your workflow and give you access to high quality, Fine Art level adjustments at the RAW level. It is a GROUNDBREAKING advancement in Post Processing.

This man is a Photoshop savant and a world class teacher. With regard to buying the ZSE, like Nike says, just do it - you won't be sorry. The following is my "review" from his website; if you're interested. I am an engineer and I don't "like" or praise every little thing that comes along. However, this man is the real deal and this is a value add or force multiplier product. If you want to up your game as a PS processor, buy this product and follow this man. Review: Purchasing the ZSE is not simply an investment in another Photoshop (PS) tool. Rather, it is an investment in this man, Blake Rudis. Blake’s ZSE is the results of years of image workflow development along with the most straight forward way to implement it in the beast known as PS. The tool helps you implement his vision for you - i.e. to become the artist he knows you aspire to be - which is a departure from the many other tools (or presets) on the market designed to get you to push buttons in order to achieve someone else’s look on your pictures. The ZSE allows you to concentrate more on your artistic vision rather than worrying about how to get PS to do what is in your mind’s eye. Blake will make sure you understand how to use his tool, not only with accompanying education but by making himself available for questions - far beyond what most instructors would do. There is almost nothing this man won’t do to assist you in becoming a better photographer artist. Blake is that rare teacher who is dedicated to your success. You will come to consider any investment in him to be the best photography investment you’ve ever made - I certainly do. I’m to the point that if Blake puts something new out, I know it is in my best interest to get it. The ZSE is by far no exception and I can give it my highest recommendation!

I honestly think Apply Image has run it's course. I haven't used it in about 8 years. I know others use it in their workflow, but now with LMs and Blend If being as powerful as they are, Apply Image feels antiquated to me. I'm probably not the best person to ask 😔

I have one question. I have been looking at the TK8 module from Tony Kuyper and one of things I've found is that many of the files end up over 2gb in size when I've finished editing them. Is it the same with ZSE6 files?

  • @f64Academy

    @f64Academy

    2 жыл бұрын

Not necessarily... But only when using Blend If. I have a whole portion of my panel dedicated to blend if. Blend if is, in my opinion, superior to traditional masking. It is lighter on file size and much easier to manipulate and as you stack them they continually interact with the layers below them. Since using Blend if I rarely, if ever, use traditional pixel masking when making luminosity adjustments.

I think the correct response is: Just because I have feelings, doesn't mean you can hurt them.

This is the first video of yours I didn't like. It was like the old bait & switch, tempt them with the offer to educate, then go over everything so fast they have to buy the course to understand it. I didn't even watch thing to the end, another first.

I love the information in your videos, but your constant hand movement when the camera is looking at you is very distracting. My mom used to say that some people would be mute if their hands were tied behind their back --- and I'm wondering if that applies to you?
