I have watched your videos on the curves tool over the last few years - and every time I gain a little more understanding. My first exposure to curves was several years ago in a Photoshop class at the local community college. That instructor took a quite different approach. He mentioned the color curves but focused on the gray curve and he started out bu moving the bottom sliders toward the center to eliminate the portions of the curve that were down near the access. He indicated that he did this to eliminate areas that were blown out or black. He then used the anchor points to make further adjustments. That approach seemed to work on the examples he used in class - but any real world pictures I had never quite worked out real well. Bottom line, I guess curves is really as you say a "feel" tool - and it takes a lot of playing with it to truly get comfortable with it.

Curves are tricky and I do check them but I also like your tip about color harmony. That seems easier than using color in curves. I do like to use the white in curves.

Hi Jim me again. Quick question Using Luminar Neo. I have a photo I was testing the power line removal and it worked perfect, then i had a line down the center of the road and went to remove it with the remove tool. When finished, it left a line of little bumps down the road in place of the white line. Tried it a few times and it did the same each time. I took the same photo over to Luminar AI and tried it and it worked perfect, completely remove the line with no bumps. Have you run into this problem with Luminar Neo? Thank you very much.

Brilliant. Thanks, Jim. In 15 mins I've gone from not having any idea about CURVES -- I mean none! -- to understanding the basics, the possibilities AND being keen to try them.... One query; the controls work in my (latest edition) in Curves but the HISTOGRAM is not visible. Am I missing a step? Or is this a bug?

Thanks Kym and not sure about the missing histogram, are you on a PC? It seems that is not in the PC version based on other comments. I am hopeful it is in the final launch version for everyone bc it is important to have there. Thanks and glad this helped!

Can't wait for NEO to officially launch. I've been playing around- learning the basics. Is there an order of operations to editing? I find that I adjust many things but then when I do other things like sliders and S curves it over rides previous edits especially contrast and brightness. Do you like NEO better than AI? I am also using Affinity and like it for Pano and Exposure Compensation.

Thanks for watching and I always start with Develop, and generally move down the tool stack in order, using the tools I feel I need to use. I do like Neo much better than AI as it has more flexibility and capability. Thanks much.

This is scarry. After quitting all things adobe, I finally picked On1 for my central control of DAM and raw processing. Use luminar Ai for sky etc. Now comes along NEO. I copied my Photo library to an external HD drive then used it as a NEO go to for cataloging. 35307 files and could not believe how fast the catalog build was. Now discovering all that NEO (prebuild) can do and will this replace my go to On1? The jury is still out but considering just that.

Thanks Charles and yes Neo is going to be quite good I think. But do keep in mind that the catalog in Neo is not as advanced as the one that's in On1. Neo (at this point at least, not sure about the future) does not have keywording, or very advanced export or print options, etc. While I love Neo and it is my favorite product, it's not as robust as On1 in that area. But for sure I will have my catalog in it too. 😁

Too bad you can't use a mask with Curves. That way you could just paint in the affect only to those areas that you want it.

And this did not work on Windows NEO. So I tried this in Luminar AI. OOPS! Will not reset bottom line center dot! So one has to do it manually and whatever adjustment that has been made will stay. I worked a photo in NEO and brought it into AI...nope, had huge magenta tonal effect. I know It's beta! I do have a very high end windows computer. So it may not be that. I know NEO is in beta but AI is not. I guess I am the only one with Luminar problems. I'll give them one more chance whenever they release the program, since I bought it, but have my doubts that they are capable of making it work in Windows as well as it does in MAC. I can tell that it is being designed on a MAC and Windows is an afterthought. There are other options out there but I like the work flow of Luminar. I will carefully check the other editors and probably quit Luminar for good. Thank you for your great videos!

@@JimNix once there is a release, it would be nice if someone would create a list and include it each time in the initial comments about how the MAC version differs from the PC version. I think when I posted last year I had 8 items and now I have seen the problems noted here in two different comments. Same price but not the same product -- at least so far.
