I think the defensive three second is really the key. Luka even said that when he's in iso, he waits and checks whether the big has to leave the paint or is about to go back in the paint. In Europe, the big doesn't have to move at all, he can just sit in the paint all game and wait for people to drive. Imagine if a Giannis, Gobert, or Bam could be in the paint for the entire game.

I say we should allow 3 seconds. I'm so tired of every single player in the league being able to get to the rim whenever they want because its essentially illegal to step in front of them or do anything to stop them. Imagine actually needing skill to score in the NBA. MJ had to play with Shaq, Mourning, Ewing, Robinson, Hakeem, and Mutumbo all camping in the paint and he still scored at will at the rim because he was that good.

Just because it’s say so in the rule doesn’t mean it’s followed. That’s like saying it’s illegal to touch players in the hips in 2022 because the handchecking is already banned. The NBA usually allows them but to a lesser degree and that’s the same with illegal defense. They are still allowed. There is a reason why MJ was double teamed most possessions against the Celtics and the Pistons. Even Thinking Basketball said this too and that is the main reason along with his offball movement made him the 2nd best playmaker of all time behind Curry despite having less assists (primarily because of the triangle which lessened his stats).

@@BigPurp9 UK is officially metric. For cars and road signs imperial is still used though. Here in Canada it's all metric. But some older people are used to imperial. It's a mix in some places.

6’8 260 pounds at pg 💀. I would score 30+ points a game too. He’s the biggest on his starting line up. LITERALLY… half of the time he gets guarded by someone that’s big and slow af or someone that’s small af. He calls for a screen every possession just so he can get guarded that’s either small or big and slow. If they big and slow, he’ll do the step back… if they are small then he will drive to the paint or do a post fadaway. Lebron would drop 40+ points a game if he did that every possession.

Don't forget that NBA has 12 mins quarter, while in Europe it's up to 10. That makes a 8 minutes difference per game. So it's not just about three seconds rules, fouls rules ecc( All true) In Nba you literally have more time to score.

Exactly! NBA games are 20% longer, therefore players can score 20% more. Just based on this fact, NBA 30ppg = EURO 25ppg.

True, 20% difference. That also means defences don't get as tired, also it's harder to go on a run. So shorter quarters benefit defensive intensity as well.

It's simple, smaller court which means less spacing, no 3 sec rule so the center can stay in the paint and rules allow more contact, imagine the NBA like that it would mean that you will have defenders all over you without getting fouls called plus smaller court means you got less room to create your own shot and additionally if you try to drive the center will always be there waiting for you. If you want an example of that just watch the olympics and check how Kevin Durant was the only player from team USA scoring at will with FIBA rules while the others were mostly complaining to the refs.

NBA rules allow more spacing and helps iso players and shot creators and FIBA rules makes it tougher to create your own shot forcing teams to move the ball and play more of a team game rather than have stars dominating the game because rules makes it tougher.

At the end of last Olympic Games, Damian Lillard claimed the same, international basket is way more difficult to score: more traffic, no 3sec rule, more physical. This is no secret. Giannis also said the same indirectly in the last World Cup. NBA became softer than international basketball, something that never happened before.

It’s a shame the NBA has turned into what it is. Every week a player is breaking some record & the young fans of the game think it’s because they are superior players. Superior athletes sure but the game is so watered down to please casuals who want to watch NBA 2k games put on the rookie setting lol I used to love the fact that one of the main things that separated the NBA from college or high school was that you had to play man to man defense. So much of what you see today is illusionary. If the MLB moved the outfield in 40 ft do you think there would be all kinds of offensive records being shattered? Of course. Should the older guys who played when it was a bigger field be wowed by the new records that would be broken? Of course not. We are impressed with things when they overcome resistance. There’s zero resistance in the league. They aren’t concerned with having the best game out there, just the most entertaining one

But the rule change that was applied from 2004 to the present literally unbalanced the game. The offense evolved a lot, but it is also true that what we see nowadays is stat inflation. Last year there was a moment when 50 players were scoring 20+ points.

The rule changes have come about because fans voiced their displeasure with the 90's Knicks brand of physicality as the league began to embrace the three point shot more. It's harder for the body to shoot those long shots or any shot after being bumped and hand checked the whole game. Players actually were household names not for their offensive skill but for their ability to intimidate and foul. One reason man to man defense was looked at as a problem was because teams with big and skilled post players would dump the ball to them in the post and wait to see if a double team came as everyone else on the court stood and watched. Now we often have two opposing teams utilizing their best perimeter players in the pick n roll instead of the two best post players deciding the game. An attraction towards either of those two styles of basketball may just be personal preference, but the league actually took off in popularity when the Showtime Lakers were scoring way in to the hundreds and a solid team like Doug Moe's Nuggets didn't care a lick about defense. The Bad Boy Pistons relied on physical defense over offense to dethrone the Celtics and Lakers, and hold down the Bulls, but the majority of fans have shown that they don't want to watch a whole league of teams like them.

As someone who had to adjust to the US imperial system, I know why Doncic thought 1 mile is 2.3 km. He was confusing the conversion for kg to pounds, which is 1 to 2.2. Miles to km is 1 to 1.6. Those are two conversions you deal with almost every day as an international person. There's no chance memorizing the fahrenheit to celsius conversion 🤣

I’ve been looking forward to this interview for a while. Luka was my favorite European prospect ever. I remember my cousin in 2016 sent me Luka’s highlight reel and was blown away by his game.

I am glad people finally have gotten a chance to see what he said in full contexts! Because i did the first time he said it but people took the headlines and turned this into a controversy and got mad at him and was like how dare this European player say its easier to score in the nba. When all he was saying the first time is the nba has more spacing the court is bigger and the rules are different. The funny thing is other European players has said the same thing! And American players that went over there to play have said the same thing. He never said the players in Europe was better.

NO DEFENSE, that's the real reason. It's really impressive to see a slow, pachydermic player like Luka penetrate defenses as effortlessly and easily as if he were taking a walk in the park. The defenders look at him, someone lazily raises a hand - just in case the ball runs into it by accident - and he scores laughing and joking.

03:30 we also dont have Defensive 3 Seconds in our country. If Shaq, Dwight, Gobert play there, they could sit on the shaded area. A weaker player wont even attempt for a lay up.

No sir the 3 in the key/zone defence rules were much stricter in Jordan’s era, making it easier to score. There were other things that made it harder to score such as physicality and less spacing due to lack of three point shooting awareness/skill. I don’t believe in all the arguing online about lebron/mj, etc. The rules and specialization(I.e talented big men vs talented guards) have changed so much that 90’s basketball and today’s basketball is like two completely different sports

It's obvious. Ask Anteto when he plays for Greece. Much slower pace, considerable less shots, more tactical game, much less spacing because the 3points line is half meter closer, goal tending rules...among others. All is focused in the NBA to enhance the offensive game. Not saying it's better or worse but sometimes it looks like another sport

One could also say that the NBA has become a more glamorous league on par with something else European like the UEFA Champions League. The best players in the world want to gravitate to those specific league because of the reputation its built. Interesting points about the rules, the 3 seconds rule Luka explained made a lot of sense because driving and kicking to open shooters is critical in todays game. But dudes are so big they slam or finesse it they want to.

I’m very upset with Luca, he stole my MVP in my rookie year of 2k, man averaged 42ppg, 6reb, 9as. I never stood a chance

ESPN and some ex-players/players really want to trash these Euro guys, but the fans know, they see it. You're even seeing some really thinly-veiled xenophobia against these guys. They can't jump, they're moving in slow motion most of the game, and yet when they explode they're unstoppable. People love to watch Doncic and Jokic play some excellent, high IQ basketball, that's not all about moving fast and dunking. Just imagine how good these two would be playing if they were playing together, and we've still got some long years with these guys, I'm sure it infuriates some. Jokic deserves his back-to-back MVP's, and anyone questioning that are just fools. Doncic has some growth to do but he's getting there, and Jokic is the guy I'd want in my top 5 right now without question.

Something we already knew, NBA rules are made so that more offense is generated. Players score more today for multiple reasons, one of the main reasons being that the rules have made it easier for them.

His story reminds me of another Real Madrid legend- Cristiano Ronaldo. He left Madeira as a young man to go to Lisbon by himself to play for Sporting. And the rest is history. A mentality like that is the first clue that they’ll be successful.

In America we prioritize the Superstar above all else. “You always need 1 or 2 to win a Championship”… In Europe they also value their Stars, Yes. But not at the expense of the team. Role players are better appreciated and everyone is encouraged to make the extra pass.

One of the ways you see it is in how so many people in America disrespect average NBA players and call them Trash. That’s why we need to credit the teams/players who have great defensive prowess because this league leans more towards offence. These guys are way more talented than ever before, but unfortunately only one side of the ball is more showcased than the other because some of the defensive plays these guys make are insane, but offence generates more ratings/revenue and it also protects the players from a lot more injuries - so I guess I get it from a business standpoint. But I wouldn’t sit here and blame the players saying that they can’t play defence because they can play it at a high level, it’s just harder with these rules set in play and trying to stay in front of someone like a KD. So it’s like a blind chess match.

Do you watch the NBA playoffs? The play hard defense and the refs allow a lot more contact. The Suns vs Bucks finals last season is an example.

There was no 3 second defensive violation in the paint area in the NBA before the year 2000, plus hand checking, so it was harder to shoot a 3 or score a layup

true but zone d was illegal then too. when hand checking was banned, scoring actually went down because zone was allowed too. you can check stats of players who played in both rule sets and scoring generally dropped

worth noting that it's rarely called especially in crunch time. Check this out: Between 2015 and 2018, NBA officials reviewed over 1,400 games and identified 141 instances of defensive three seconds in the last 2 minutes of close games. It was called only once.

Euro game length is 4x10 minutes vs NBA 4X12 minutes. That's 8 minutes more in total to score points. That's actually quite a lot.

I do like that FIBA is more execution and tactical. A reason why I enjoyed this past Olympics so much. Much harder for one player to completely dominate like it is in the NBA.

One thing people also forget is that the playing time is 8 minutes shorter in international basketball, not 48 minutes, but 40... also a huge factor in this

The key is really the three point line. I know it seems counter intuitive, but a closer line means threes are more contested. You guard a three in NBA it opens up space behind you,not in FIBA rules. Further 3s means more space for everyone. The other reason is subbing. In Europe all teams rotate intensely from early on, so defensive intensity stays higher. Also helped by playing less games, being rested. No US player has ever been consistently dominant in Europe.

The subbing thing is true. High level teams can run 12-man rotations in Europe. I've seen teams start their 3rd string players. Meanwhile many NBA teams rely on 10-man or even shorter rotations (especially in the playoffs).

For a teenager footballer or basketball player playing for Real Madrid is the top thing they can possibly get. Not a sacrifice at all. On the contrary, you feel you are in the road for greatness.

When I played n Europe it wAs crazy. We had kids from the country who had highschool practice and would come practice with us. They were on the team but they didn’t play unless it was a blowout but they competed n practice

It sounds contradicting at first but it makes sense and of all people Luka would know. In the nba there are the best players in the world for sure, and the best 30 or 40 players are making difference vs Euroleague. Other players are not such big difference, they are in the similar level as Euroleague players. But in my opoinion euroleague has better team basketball, better tactics offensive and defensive, more smart basketball. Nba is more showbuisness individual focused. In Europe it is fight in every game. In 90% of cases when player with 10 points per game in the nba move to Euroleague he avarage 10-12 points per game for the same amount of minutes in euroleague. really not big difference. Of course he would avarage much more points if he plays double more mintues... Lets see play off team Utah Jazz and their point guard Mike Conley, in my opinion there are at least 3 better players in Europe in this position. Also in Europe it is much bigger passion for basketball than in nba, especially atmosphere by the fans. Nba is the best basketball league in the world without any doubt but difference is not that big as people in Usa thinks... There is good and exciting basketball in Europe. The best players are in the nba, but are the best coaches in the world in the nba ? I would not say that.

His "we use kilometers" joke wasn't so funny, but it did remind me of Pulp Fiction, when Vincent and Jules talk about Quarter Pounders with Cheese at Burger King being called "Royale with Cheese" in Europe because they use the metric system, and then Jules casually brings it up during the tense confrontation with Brett before he shoots him.

I absolutely HATE that players get away with palming, carrying and traveling while dribbling in the NBA. It is disgusting. the hand must be on top of the ball period not on the side or underneath.

He just added context, smaller court means less space, lanes more clogged up and there's no 3 second paint rule. Luka gets lots of points from his drives to the basket which he explains quite well, is harder to do based on the rules and court size.

It’s a shame the NBA has turned into what it is. Every week a player is breaking some record & the young fans of the game think it’s because they are superior players. Superior athletes sure but the game is so watered down to please casuals who want to watch NBA 2k games put on the rookie setting lol I used to love the fact that one of the main things that separated the NBA from college or high school was that you had to play man to man defense. So much of what you see today is illusionary. If the MLB moved the outfield in 40 ft do you think there would be all kinds of offensive records being shattered? Of course. Should the older guys who played when it was a bigger field be wowed by the new records that would be broken? Of course not. We are impressed with things when they overcome resistance. There’s zero resistance in the league. They aren’t concerned with having the best game out there, just the most entertaining one.

One other never mentioned aspect: In Europe they enforce the doping rules. In the US i dont think so. Otherwise players who go to the US would not so bulking up in such short time

There's a land mile, than a nautical one, but on top of that the US and UK mile are do not measure equal either. But a standard land mile equals to approx 1.6kms.

Its simple Euroleague is way more team based than the NBA. One or two guys dont gotta carry a team. Everyone contributes
