I could not agree more. Not awarding 1st Prize is not a comment on the quality of the contestants, but rather an indication of the gross incompetence of the judges. After all, the young artists are not competing with some undefined, mythical standard of greatness but with eachother.

Brilliant! One of the best pianists of our generation!

Был и ещё один пианист- на порядки выше всех и ангельски красивый, с чудесными руками, а энергетика - божественная , и это Алексей Султанов. Но его загнобили.Послушать и посмотреть Его можно на канале hurmony 14447. А первый концерт Петра Ильича на канале его вдовы с Далласским симфонич. оркестром( есть и другие Его Исполнения, но это, особенно первую часть, отмечу как шедевр из шедевров. И также заме чательны комменты Его почитателей на всех роликах.Он также лучший исполнитель Шопена на все времена.И лучший исполнитель 2-го концерта Рахманинова( на Vlll международном конкурсе пианистов им Вэна Клайберна в Нэшвилле( Техас, США, 1989 год), где ему было всего 19 лет!

Gorgeous man, gorgeous hands, gorgeous pianist, I love this man

Lugansky has a faultless technique and simply can't play an ugly sound. The noble tempo of the first movement is surprising for a competition--but it works because the voice leading is so clear. His pedaling never blurs. The choice of a Kawai was a surprise. But withholding the gold medal from Lugansky is one of the travesties of competitions.

Thank you. You have find this wanderfull and important video which was disappeared from youtube since some years ago. It was a great performance in spite of the unfair decision of the jury. He was the first prize in the facts.

Lugansky was very young, and the judges are looking for a standard of near perfection. Lugansky has now gone far beyond where he was then as a pianist, and competing is about learning more than just winning, as wonderful as winning is. Lugansky got the highest marks, and was pushed to strive harder and has demonstrated he is fully capable. He was in Atlanta a couple of years ago and performed Rachmaninov's 3rd and it was the best I've ever heard that night. My husband was so impressed he thanked Lugansky in Russian which brought the warmest smile of connection from the tired pianist then after the concert enduring the greeting and handshaking from his chair behind the table that was set up.

Wow! Excellent pianist and a gorgeous man!

Magistral comme toujours avec Lugansky... du choix du tempo du premier mouvement à la beauté plastique du jeu pianistique, en passant par la transparence de la sonorité et l'expression noble, grande qu'il donne à ce concerto dont il ne fait pas un numéro pianistique... Evgeny Svetlanov avait raison quand il a dit dans une interview à la radio française : "Lugansky est le prince que le piano russe attendait."...

Splendid piano playing indeed! The withholding of the gold medal perhaps speaks volumes about the real merit of these competitions in actually determining the true worth of a pianist. Lugansky has enjoyed a career in which his level of performance has never wavered from the realm of sublime, and his technique has remained completely flawless throughout!

Same thing happened with Debargue a few years later. Competitions have their place, but they are not the be-all and end-all of a career.

3 competitions alone gave us Pollini, Argerich, Lupu, Perahia, Pletnev, Trifonov, Zimerman, Matsuev, Cho, Blechaz, Kobrin, Uchida…..Luganski wins Silver and you’re in a state about it?

First Prize Not Awarded. It says more about competitions and judging than the always-marvelous Lugansky. He's is one of my favorites. Superb playing, always.

It's happened often in the various categories of the competition. Sometimes it's due to so many good performances that no one competitor scores well enough. Maestro Lugansky scored a clear silver (no ties), so he was the best of the competition .

The mistake at 2:55 cost him the gold medal. The last two notes of that passage were quite audibly wrong.

@@franksmith541Good ear but it sounds its not single notes and one note sounds right and the accompaying note sounds wrong. thanks for pointing that out. I wish the camera was not zoomed on his fingers at that time as this would inevitably be followed by a pucker in the face even if it is just minimal.

So good to have a historical record of the beginning of a career of a master musician. So young and so brilliant! His control, technique for this masterwork was beyond brilliant. He should have gotten the award!

I wanted to shortly listen for getting an impression and there I am… impressed after the full performance. This is an excellent rendition and an epic live interpretation of the concerto. Not to mention the greatness of sound, touch and technique

Heard him with the CSO in Chicago maybe 5 years ago. He was spectacular (and gorgeous too!) :)

Having seen this I feel like the 1994 jury must have been even further out of their minds than the one of 2015. Edit: The tactfulness of the "(non)applause" after the 1st mov is heartwarming. Gotta love Russian audience.

Sometimes there are so many good performances that nobody gets enough votes for gold. Lugansky scored the only silver medal, and the gold wasn't awarded to anybody else, so he was judged the best of the piano competition

Я думал, что участники конкурса, которые сами прошли через ужас выхода на великую сцену Большого зала и играли перед выдающимися музыкантами, поймут и вспомнят это состояние, будут как можно более расположены к конкурсантам. Выяснилось, что члены жюри справедливы лишь в случае, если в свое время получили БОЛЕЕ ВЫСОКИЕ премии: Джон Лилл, Элисо Вирсаладзе, Лев Власенко, Наум Штаркман. Но чем ниже были премии судей - четвертые, пятые, шестые, - тем категоричнее они себя вели: дескать, на первую премию кандидата нет. Обиды давних времен, как оказалось, сказываются на решениях даже спустя столько лет и десятилетий. Результатом стало фиаско скрипичного и фортепианного конкурсов, где первых премий не оказалось, и особенно виолончельного: Наталья Шаховская сломала ногу и не могла присутствовать на двух турах. Пока она была в больнице, жюри сделало всё, чтобы избавиться от ее учеников. Хороших студентов гробили, а в финале играть оказалось практически некому - не было не только первых трех премий, но даже пятой. Фортепианный конкурс мог бы закончиться удачнее, если бы секретарь - это вновь был Михаил Воскресенский - не вмешался в работу жюри. По результатам голосования, хотя и с минимальным перевесом, первую премию собирались присудить, но после его вмешательства перевес был уже в другую сторону. Хотя секретарь жюри не имеет права голоса, он высказывался очень развернуто, потому что его ученик Александр Гиндин неудачно выступил в финале. Первые два тура он играл замечательно, шел чуть ли не наравне с Николаем Луганским. На финале же сорвался, иначе мог бы претендовать на первую премию - а получил четвертую. Луганский показал себя слабее на втором туре, зато феерически играл финал. Такого финала я больше не помню! И я безумно огорчился, когда Луганскому, набравшему 23.8, дали вторую премию, не присудив первую. Жюри возглавлял Лев Власенко; результат его также не обрадовал, но ему было не до борьбы: он серьезно болел и вскоре после закрытия конкурса лег на операцию.

There's something wrong with Lugansky. Even at the slender age of 22, under the immense strain of a major competition, he seems to be incapable of playing a wrong note. And he does this whilst delivering a performance that is as tender as it is thrilling. The man is not right in the head.

I think to a maestro, they only sought to share true music and artistry, if not eager. When skill level reaches to a caliber that of someone like Lugansky's, that would guarantee to impress almost everyone, I think it's only normal to be excited to show it off and exert dominance, rather than being scared and hesitant. To Lugansky, it's not even a competition.

Strange that one of the greatest pianists of our time was only awarded second prize - I'd be interested to hear his other concerto in this competition. Sometimes no first prize is awarded because no pianist (or other instrumentalist) is "worthy" of first prize (also two worthy pianists can share first prize). Difficult to believe this is the case with Lugansky. Mind you it hasn't stopped him going on to a wonderful career.

Пр глупости жюри ему дали вторую, первую никому не присудили (считай, что победили). Султанов был в 1998 и его в третий тур доренский не пустил, устроив классный вечер своих учеников.

He imitates his mentor to the minutest details including the body language. This is in sharp contrast to Richter, who learnt little from his mentor.

Превосходный пианист, но этот концерт у Н. Луганского звучит не в лучшем исполнении, несколько заштамповано механически и сухо. Особенно в начале акцент делается не на красоту и изящность мелодии, а на ударные аккорды и механический ритм.
