Luftwaffe FW190 A-5 fighter flying with RARE ORIGINAL BMW 801 engine

FW190 A-5 (The Germans called the Fw 190 Würger or "Butcher Bird") fighter flying with a RARE ORIGINAL BMW 801 engine. This is one of the FLYING HERITAGE COLLECTION's fighter's that took to the skies on June 16th 2012. Was amazing to see these historic and this VERY RARE aircraft take to the sky. #Fw190A5 #avgeek #RAREfighter #luftwaffe #WWII

One golden English afternoon I had the opportunity to see a shiny Spitfire, both on the ground and flying, and hear its engine... I was very impressed how beautiful and powerful it was. Plus, I got an excellent autobiographical book by a WW2 ace, who was kind enough to sign it for a nephew of mine. That was in the 90s. WW2 felt like so long ago, I was even suprised at the veteran pilot's pretty good shape. It's amazing to think we are now closer to double the number of years since that war.

My deep compliments to your comment (the full truth in a few words); YES a rdial needs to be waked up, clyinder by clyinder. Besides, my father flew the A8 model and he is still fond of talking of his beloved 190. Is a really nice bird to fly, he says, but one shall be aware of torque (side thrust) during take off and KEEP SPEED during landing (not that far awy from current commercial arliners). Otherwise - he continues - it was pure joy to take her through the parcours.

The FW190 was Germany's best fighter plane. Unfortunately, the BF109 was given preference. The Messerschmitt had bad rear sighting, and a too narrow landing gear. Toward the end of the war, many BF109s were lost to inexperienced pilots trying to land the plane with it's dangerously narrow stance.

Many inexperienced pilots were simply shot down as well, as the Luftwaffe was outnumbered at the end of the war. The Me-109 had better high altitude performance, climb and turn characteristics then all of the A series FW-190s. The last 109's, G-10 and K-4, were stellar performers.

Slightly oversimplified comment, but valid enough. A lot of Luftwaffe Fighter pilots actually preferred the Me109, simply because of the hours they had accumulated in them, they thoroughly understood the aircraft and knew exactly how to fight with it. For the later war with the less experienced pilots and the necessity of using fighters for ground attack the FW190 was undoubtedly the more suitable aircraft.

He said once it was off the ground it was easy to fly and a pleasure doing so, but take-offs and landings called for 100% of your attention, 99% wasn't good enough. One thing's for certain, in competant hands the 109 could be a dangerous adversary right to the end of the war and not to be underestimated.

What is the history of that aircraft? Did it see any combat at all?

+ Mike Kelly That is a rather long story, but it is the only WW2 original Fw-190 that is flying. It is a Fw-190A-5/U3 with the factory conversion for ground attack roles. It was manufactured in April 1943, Wk.Nr. 1511227 and would have been delivered to service around May 1943 with factory codes DG+HO. It may have briefly flown with another unit, but it was probably delivered with a small number of Fw-190s to JG54 while they transitioned from Bf-109s on the Eastern Front. It had a very short service life. It flew with 4./JG54 and was lost on 19-July-1943 in the Leningrad area during a short 15 minute flight to bomb a train near Voibakala. The combat records said lost from battle damage but it was in fact an engine failure, possibly sabotage because a rag was found in an oil line. (Records also showed that it had recently been given a new engine.) Pilot Feldwebel Paul Rätz put the aircraft down in a grove of small trees and began to make his way to the German lines, but was captured by Russian troops. Rätz had worked as a ground mechanic before becoming a pilot and worked for the Russians as an electrician while a POW, and he was released in 1949. The Germans typically recovered aircraft but were unable to retrieve the Fw-190 and it remained hidden by the trees and remarkably undisturbed in a remote area. In the early 1990s, a video surfaced showing the Fw-190 as a literal time capsule in the Russian woods. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKmZprqipbickbA.html Negotiations were made by a UK collector to purchase and export the wreck to the UK, where a partial restoration began. But the aircraft soon was offered for sale and was purchased by billionaire Paul Allen for his museum collection. Allen spent the money to have the aircraft restored to as original condition as possible and to flying condition. (This was somewhere close to a $10 million dollar restoration, give or take.) Much of the aircraft metal is original, some new cowling sections, leading edges, new tailplane. Some sections did not meet original factory specifications so small corrections were made to be flyable. The paint is recreated from the original JG54 paint that was found on the aircraft (aside from some minor disagreements from historians on the paint codes and shades.) The film from the forest dates from sometime around 1989, which is also the same year that pilot Paul Rätz passed away. I doubt he got to see his aircraft, but his son and family are aware of the plane and helped with the research and restoration. Paul Allen passed away a few years ago and his museum was closed, however it was recently said that the entire museum and collection have been purchased by a new owner.

+ Andre Missfeldt The first owners in the UK started a restoration with new skins, but then offered the project for sale. It was bought by Paul Allen who had the resources to have it restored to perfect original condition with much of the original skins. Restorations at Allen's museum were typically contracted out to multiple vendors under secrecy. The airframe work and research was performed by JME Engineering in the UK with a small and very talented group of people. Engine work was completed in California by one of the best engine experts in the world. Items that could not be used were remade as original to be correct, although this aircraft was still very complete when it was salvaged. Finally assembly and painting was completed at Gosshawk in Arizona. JME Engineering also performed the airframe restoration on Allen's Me-262 that has not flown yet. After the Me-262 work Mr. Moore at JME retired to a new hobby building boats, although Allen was also working with them to build a Stuka. (The Stuka was built by another company and is not complete at this time. Mr Allen passed away and his museum collection has been sold. No info on if the museum will move.) Allen's museum had a lot of rare wrecks that will probably not be completed for years or decades.

Mustang and f4u used 150 octanes while Germany used 87 octane fuel because of scarcity. A fw190 on 150 octane tuned is like flying a bearcat but faster! In fact the bearcat was a copy of the fw190. American planes wouldn’t stand a chance! That also goes for the bf109. P51 was German design

Strange how some machines have come to symbolize that war. You think of German machines and the 109 comes to mind, not the more potent 190. British? The Spitfire, not the more successful Hurricane. Japanese? The Zero, though they had better fighters. American? The Wildcat, though it was out-played in the early phases of the Pacific war

Historical correct would be. U. K Hurricane (workhorse) USA P47 (jug, flying tank) or B17 (flying fortress) Japan Zero (outperformed) or maby late war "George" (USA equal) Soviet Pe2 (overweight walruss) Germany? They only had low octane fuel or C3 that ruined the engines. My fav.. Late Me109 or Ta152 goosebumps!

The Spitfire was over the course of the entire war more successful that the Hurricane. Only in the Battle of Britain was the Hurricane more prolific. The Spit served through out and underwent more modification and advancement than most other aircraft in the war, it was a true great. BoB was definitely the Hurricanes glory moment though.
