My grandparents were huge into JRPGs when Lufia 2 came out. I remember being a little kid and we'd have game" were we'd all sit around and pass around the controller doing the Ancient Cave, every 10 floors or so we'd switch who was playing. Some of the best memories i have of my grandparents were doing that.

The best part about Lufia 2 is that the cliche girlfriend/girl from the hero's hometown is NOT the one he ends up with. I can't remember any other JRPG that actually establishes that relationship and then goes "NOPE!" and the hero actually falls for someone else.

This is tied for my favorite game of all time. I agree that it easily ranks up there with other classic RPGs like Chrono Trigger and FFVI, but sadly it isn't anywhere near as well known. It's such a shame for a game that had such great puzzles, story, and characters, not to mention a phenomenal soundtrack and fun battle mechanics like the IP gauge, didn't get the recognition it deserved. Anyway, thanks for making this review. The more people know about this hidden gem, the better. :)

People who've played the original Lufia already know how the story is going to end. However, I'd still recommend playing it. The ending is VERY well done and is quite the tear-jerker.

one of my top 3 SNES RPG's, the thing that always brings me back is the Ancient Cave. Last year I replayed the whole game and completed the Ancient Cave & got all the Iris Treasures, can't remember if I had actually completed it in the past and gotten all the treasures. It felt pretty satisifying, was around 45 hours to do everything including the ancient cave and treasures.

This game really did go underappreciated during its release. It could have easily stood up there everybody's collective conscious with the likes of Chrono Trigger and FFVI had it not released during the end of the SNES' life span, when everyone had already moved on to the N64.

This game holds 2 firsts for me, it was the first game I paid for with my own money, I was still in elementary school with no job so to save up for it I wouldn't spend all of my lunch money for school, after a couple of months of saving I finally had the $30 to pay for it. I remember lining up at the cashier with my parents so horribly embarrassed because I paid for it in mostly coins stashed in my little black drawstring pouch which was absolutely bulging. Mind you these were the days when the only reviews we had access to were magazine reviews, I never did manage to find one with a Lufia review and I decided to save for this game purely because of the screenshots on the back, I'm so glad I struck it lucky with this one otherwise I would have been devastated as a 10 year old kid saving for a crappy game. The 2nd first is that it was the first game that made me cry, that ending along with the music, I just couldn't hold back the tears, also worth mentioning is the amazing boss battle theme!

I remember I was 10 and I bought this game for my friend as a birthday gift because he had the first game. We were blown away by how good it is though at that age we gave up at the glitched cave. The game actually has some weird bugs if you rapidly switch equipment around... not sure what causes it but one time I was able to do insane damage early in the game. Still a great game

I loved this game! The story at first felt kinda cliché; "go to this town, solve the problem here, go to next town and repeat" but it ended up being very well done. NO random battles was a huge boon. The characters are quirky and funny and there is this mystery to the entire world. There is a ton of customisation with capsule monsters, special equipment with special IP attacks etc. I also loved the puzzles and the billion different and secrets things to discover. There is just so much to do in this game. I spent hours in the casino alone. And when you have done all there is in the normal game, you also have the ancient cave which is a game in a game.

I was so enamored with the capsule monster system and ancient cave that I still revisit this game often.

pretty cool. I randomly found this game at a blockbuster for sale around when they were getting rid of all their snes titles. i had never heard of it before, and took a stab in the dark cuz it was like.. 5 bucks or something ridiculously cheap. RPGs usually did very poorly as rentals. I remember even the most popular RPG titles were always fully in stock even when they were still new...like I have super clear memories of like, a full row for Parasite Eve on those shelves. It was all over the commercials, etc. there were many expectations... but like, even though it was such a short game, they were always full in stock from day 1, nobody had rented any copies(i went there every week)...I imagine everyone who wanted to play it just bought it. I mean, that's the logical approach to an RPG right? All the RPGs were always fully in stock simply because they weren't designed to be picked up and played in such a short time frame. They always had them there for rent...like ogre battle, kartia, etc. etc. maybe just 1-2 copies each, cuz MAYBE there'd be one sucker that'd play it for a couple days to see if they wanted to... ~buy~ it. Stories like these, are very rare...in the sense that it wasn't like.. the norm. That said, it's an interesting memory you have for sure, I bet it must have been pretty awesome...especially being able to play it with family.

1:12 - That's the drawback to doing a prequel. Most of the time, you already know in advance what's going to happen to the characters. It's for this reason that I always recommend people who have never played the series start with this one. Most of the time I wouldn't do that, but this is one of the few exceptions.

Also I'll say something about the first Lufia game. It was made to be an homage to the old Dragon Quest games, and as such didn't rely on a complicated story or fleshed out characters. I actually thought it was pretty good for an RPG made in the pre-mainstream era.

This video is old but there was another glitch in the US version... I refer to it as thr Level Zero glitch. Basically you enter the settings and change the audio from stereo to mono then back again it will either freeze the game (It doesn't damage it as far as I can tell) or... it makes a random party member level zero it maxes all stats and your character CAN'T BE HIT. Interestingly the ancient cave reverts the level back still.

I think this game was released just before Nintendo discontinued the Super Nintendo system and replaced it with the PlayStation. As a promotion for the game Nintendo Power magazine advertised a limited edition Lufia wristwatch that could be ordered through the magazine. I bought one of these watches and I still have it. Gamers have told me the Lufia watch is one of the rarest Super Nintendo collectibles along with the Final Fantasy 5 trading cards released by Square Soft in Japan in1992. These cards were never released in the U.S. because the game never came out on Super Nintendo. I ordered a box of the cards from a store in Japan and I still have the cards. I like to give one of the cards to gamers that I meet who like FF5 and don't know about the cards.

Lexis is extremely overlooked. He boasts the highest int of any character, making his magic hit the hardest. Some of his weapons are also aoe, inflicting damage to all enemies. The problem lies in the fact that when you acquire him, you don’t really benefit from adding another strong caster. And his physical power isn’t particularly good. He also has relatively low MP, so he required more items to keep his mp stores in check.

While this is a great game, sadly this is where my knowledge of Lufia Games stop. Any further releases I know very little about and it seems clear that Lufia 2 is the pinnacle of the series according to many people. It is one that I would like to come back to at some point because I last played this game right after "dealing with" the first Lufia's issues. Since I am usually not a person that will play through a new game + (except for lovingly doing that with Chrono Trigger) I missed out on the extras. Definitely a good reason to come back.

The linearity of Lufia 2 is what makes the game, it forces you to move through an engaging character-driven story and distracts you from the fact that the world isn't as nearly as fleshed out. This is not a world-driven game like gen 1 Pokemon, and that's ok. Lufia 2 is almost perfect for what it is.
