    Ok, things this episode established about changelings. 1. Changelings are sentient and capable of emotions and complex thought, they are not just drones, and if they have a hive mind, its a thing they can choose to close 2. Changelings can speak equestrian in their natural form, they are not mute and don't sound like pinkie if she had 12 pots of coffee , nor do they have the hum to their voice that Chrysalis did 3. Changelings can turn into anything, not just ponies, they can be dragons, or even inanimate objects, disproving that they use a force field with illusion magic to change, as well as the theory that what they change into has to be able to survive on its own 4. Changelings can have names, not numbers or simply no name at all, time will tell whether this trait is unique to Thorax, or if it is shared among all changelings 5. Changelings can cry, a thing many thought them unable to do 6. Changelings can perfectly imitate movements as well as looks mere moments after meeting someone, something that was hinted at in a Canterlot Wedding part 2, but not to this extent, it seems to be a passive ability they have 7. Changelings come from eggs, not live birth, and seem to hatch all at once, like alligators 8. Changelings are born in a larva state, without hind legs, and can crawl mere moments after hatching 9. Changeling have hives, "Ever since I split my egg at the nursery hive" 10. The love blast hurled all the changelings back to their home, it didn't kill them, and it didn't discriminate based on intent 11. Changelings can sense large quantities of love from a distance 12. When a changeling gets hungry enough or encounter small acts of kindness, they have a strong primal urge to hiss, attack, and feed, and sometimes will even drop their disguise (Seems rather counter productive, its also possible he simply ran out of energy to stay changed and feed at the same time) 13. Chrysalis is considered evil by at least one changeling 14. Changelings do not seem to just pick up on emotions, Thorax gives no indication that he's reading Spike's emotions, so they might only be able to sense love, very strong emotions, or maybe Thorax was simply respecting Spike's privacy, witch would mean they can turn off their emotion sensing at will 15. There are currently no changeling detection spells 16. Changeling eyes become slitted like a cats while discarding their disguise 17. Changelings have a Kingdom, now its canon beyond a doubt... 18. Changelings blink both up and down and sideways, suggesting two pairs of eyelids www.pinterest.com/pin/414260865707086738/ 19. Changelings can levitate things with their magic, and the color seems to match their transformation glow and eye color 20. Changelings can have a blue transformation glow, not just green These are all the head cannons that were ether made official or broken this day. And just think, this episode didn't even focus on the changelings much at all, lol

    I actually like how Shining was portrayed in this episode. It makes his character more interesting by giving him a significant flaw, something that's been the case with the Mane Six since the start (and made *them* more interesting characters). Shining's attitude towards changelings is *understandable*, but still isn't *right* -- and distinguishing the two is quite a subtle thing to do for a TV-Y show.

    Phill G I forgot about that one, but it, like Thorax, is clearly a deviant, as is shown in Thorax's flashback. Besides, there were a lot of things thrown in that episode for the sake of fan pandering that are debatably canon. Kind of like how Twilight forgot how to fly between the end of Season 3 and the start of Season 4.

    Twilight flying at the closing shot of the S3 finale was said to be creative license while a song was going on. They thought it made for a cool closing shot to promise "everything's gonna be just fine". And the friendly changeling at the wedding was confirmed on Twitter to be a canon friend of Matilda's.

    You know, it's interesting how Spike wants to be disguised at the start when this episode is about Thorax disguising himself to fit in. It's a subtle theme.

    I sensed a parallel with this episode and the Avatar series. The changelings and Queen Chrysalis represent the Fire nation and our protagonists represent the other nations(water, earth and air). Most people from the Fire nation were bad while others were good. They were all just under the influence of a evil ruler. The other nations had some bad experiences with the Fire nation in the war, which lead them to believe that they were heartless and couldn't be redeemed. It's the same thing that happened in this episode with our protagonists who had the same mindset. Also, Spike was the representation of the avatar, who brought balance to each of the nations, where as he brought peace between his pony friends and Thorax.

    This, for me, was another fantastic Spike episode, maybe even a little better than Gauntlet of Fire, and that was already a great episode for him. I love Spike like this: mature, competent, compassionate, exactly what you'd expect from Twilight's #1 assistant. I can understand the misgivings about Changelings from everypony else, especially considering what happened in the Season 2 finale, but Thorax is just a sweet and lovable little guy. Also, that song. About time Spike got one in the show all to himself, and it is _glorious_!

    No, Spike has always been the cause of many errors, mistakes... throughout the entire show. There are lots of things I've discovered and always knew a very long time ago about Spike's character. It was Twilight herself all along who saved the Crystal Empire, not him. She knew where to find the heart, she found the hidden passage to it, she told Spike to bring it back, risking herself by failing Celestia's test… The writers had that in mind the whole time until the fans suddenly wanted them to change that because they were just sick and tired of Spike's abuse, horrible treatments, and how he mostly spent his appearances in the shadows in all the previous seasons. They wanted them to put an end to the damage on Spike's role, treatments… but never realized or wanted to realize that they've damaged the entire SHOW themselves because of that. They couldn't learn to get used to it and were too sensitive over that. He was meant only to be the simple sidekick and a goofy character that provides comic relief, screws up, embarrassing himself… usually, a simple background character. The episode "Princess Spike" where he completely messes up was one of his usual, typical roles, then learning his lessons… in "Secret of My Excess"… And in "Just for Sidekicks" where he looks after the Mane Six's pets while they're gone on adventures, no wonder why he was (supposed to) mostly left behind and only had few appearances throughout the show. The show's based on ponies, which means THEY are the ones who defeat villains, going on adventures… and the show became a total disaster because of the changes in Spike the writers did because of those sensitive fans. The episode "Gauntlet of Fire" had major flaws, as well, and MANY others, especially Spike episodes. All the more reason why there weren't supposed to be and shouldn't have been any Spike episodes AT ALL. I gotta say that the episode was written by the fans themselves. Twilight couldn't handle some teenage dragons, (creatures who only could fly and breath fire, no magic, completely weak and harmless enough against powerful, magical ponies) but in other episodes like "Twilight's Kingdom", she confronts Tirek just fine, which proves that is just one of those stupid excuses from the fans to show Spike doing something good for once, just for once. Of course, he only hands over the specter to Ember. All this "character development" Spike got was a huge mistake made by the fans themselves, and totally caused the show to derail completely! The writers of the show had to do those catastrophic changes just so those Spike fans wouldn't stop watching the show and would have fewer watchers (or probably no watchers at all) and all their hard work on it would've been for NOTHING. They'd CANCEL the entire show, throw it away straight in the trash can.

    Theres a difference, Shining is being Racist, but how could he know, Changelings invaded Canterlot and they never showed any signs of Remorse. And their leader who they all seemed to follow could have been responsible for the death of his wife.

  • @Dairo512

    @Dairo512

    As far as Shining knew, the changelings that invaded his home city and attacked him and everybody and everything he cared about were all of them, and all in it together. Thorax is *the* exception, not the rule, a point that he himself admits. Also, changelings survive by deception, and the best possible assumption regarding Thorax is that he was made a pariah of his kind for his deviance. So if all but one members of a given demographic display a given behavior, then the rational thing to believe of any member of that demographic encountered is that they will engage in that behavior. This kind of pattern recognition and projection is what allowed the human species to recognize which aspects of their environment were beneficial and which were harmful, and also gave them the groundwork for the controlled breeding that later produced what we call domesticated animals. It's not only right, it has for the longest time been a *necessary* ability.

  • @Ryodraco

    @Ryodraco

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Luffyiscool All indications (both how the changelings are spoken of in their debut and their history in the comics) suggests that ponies have never been given a reason to think there are any exceptions to the rule of how changelings behave (there was the one at Cranky's wedding, but that was mostly a joke scene, and at best shows one made friends with a donkey), and that this has been the case for a LONG time. So its not simply that Chrysalis was bad and all changelings are judged by her actions, but that the race as a whole is loyal to her and largely behaves as a colony that follows her bidding and supports it. Shining likely didn't bother to mention the rest of the changeling race when he was explaining why there are no nice ones because they didn't really act as individuals so much as extension of Chrysalis' will. So the only mistake would have been dismissing a changeling that claimed to be good without hearing them (or their supporter) out, and in true good pony fashion they all come around quickly once Spike makes his case and Twilight vouches for them. So at worst it was technical racism, not really all that comparable to real world racism which is a lot more complex and difficult to overcome. It's especially notable that Thorax never claims the ponies are wrong for judging him or that changelings as a whole are not evil. He simply knows that he isn't evil and wants to see if he can find a way to survive without draining others of love, and potentially change his kind in the process.

    I can't seem to understand why everypony is forgetting the crystal heart. If there is a place to build friendship between the changelings and the rest of the ponies, it would be in an empire that can fling away threats like Sombra. The fact that Thorax is even inside the kingdom should be an indication that he doesn't pose a threat. If the worst comes from this situation, it's that Chrysalis is somehow using Thorax's good nature for her own ambitions. Unfortunately, the crystal heart also gives no excuses for the racism in this episode. I don't know, I just think everypony should have figured out the kind nature of Thorax when they realized he was actually inside the empire. There's nothing wrong with treating changelings like a threat, but treating them like they are incapable of being good was going way too far.

    I think you got something very wrong about the generalization. The MAJORITY of unicorns are good so Starlight should be seen as a friend. The MAJORITY of changelings are bqd so Thorax should be seen as a foe. That is how it works. The moral here is of course, don't condem the individual based on the actions of their people.

I have been wanting an episode where Spike sings for a very long time, he's one of my favorite characters of the entire show, it's just a shame that many of his episodes aren't that good. But Equestria Games, Inspiration Manefistation, Gauntet of Fire and The Times They Are a Changeling are excellent Spike episodes. Spike had amazing character development this season, which was just fantastic! I hope that his character development continues onward from here on out. The only other episode to make me cry was Crusaders of the Lost Mark, so yeah; this episode is easily my new favorite of the season. Great reaction as always and can't wait for more! XD.

    DankSouls Brony Same here. I love Spike's character, pretty much from the beginning, but never cared for how he was treated a lot of the time. Either as a punching bag for the other ponies or written out of character just for the conflict in the episode to work. Equestria Games was an episode that I loved. While it was a shame that we didn't get to see the actual Equestria Games, Spike's character growth was a plus. Inspiration Manifestation was another episode that I really loved, showing Spike how to say something negative to someone he had a crush on was a big step for his character development as well. Gauntlet of Fire was another fantastic Spike centered episode that is pretty self explanatory here. And then this episode, just amazing! I really hope that they write his character this well from here on out. Love how well his character development has come! XD.

    Glad you came around on this episode as well. My first viewing was also disappointed with several aspects, like the turnaround at the end. But after watching a dozen or so reactors and their thoughts pro and con on various aspects. My enjoyment of this episode has only grown. One reactor, can't remember who, explained the ending with twilight and how it fits perfectly with her character and position, that it would likely work that way. And with both spike and Twilight both calling him a friend now, the others had no choice but to accept fully. She IS the princess of Friendship. This is her roll. I do agree however that the smartest thing to do, would have been to contact first and the conflict could be tempered some.

  • @TheLostBear78

    @TheLostBear78

    7 жыл бұрын

    i explained better elsewhere, so I will copy and paste here: -------------------------------- I didn't care for the speed of the ending at first. But on watching other reactions many times now. I feel now that the change is more believable. Twilight is the princess of friendship, she would have to recognise what real friendship looks like pretty quickly. It is her royal duty to build and spread friendship. Spike put himself out there and she saw it was real, that is 100% of what she would need to completely flip. Also, as the princess of friendship, a ruler over matters of friendship, her word would nearly be law on matters of friendship. Even if the others still had misgivings, they would have to defer to her judgement heavily. Also, with how close Shining Armor and Cadence are too Twilight, that would also carry extremely heavy weight. They would see little other choice but to accept get guidance on this issue. And as Cadance is the ruler of the crystal empire, once she officially extended the kingdoms hoof in friendship, it was absolutely the duty of everyone else there to accept it no matter any personal misgivings. Hence, the quickness of the turnaround was completely within their Character and within Cannon. Not having a quick change after spike putting himself out there on this episode would maybe been more real life, but it would NOT have fit in cannon for this show.

Plus I love how Spike risked everything for Thorax despite what every pony thought of him and taught Twilight the princess of friendship and every other pony that friend can com from anywhere even among the most unusual of places. Starlight's behavior was abnormal for unicorns. Thorax's is abnormal for Changelings. 18:10 Zebras don't have a known history of attacking ponies. Come on, man.

  • @ljuc

    Comparing Zecora and Starlight to a changeling is not the right thing to do. Changelings are being born evil, and ponies have already had experience with them. While Zecora was just a Zebra, and ponies were just hiding because they knew nothing about her. Starlight is a standard unicorn pony other ponies used to deal with and understand that ponies are not the same. So all of 3 cases has completely different conflicts.

    I'm just expected the obvious betrayal later when Thorax pulls a Discord and has to redeem himself.

    I had 2 assumptions about changelings going into this episode: they can't become inanimate objects, and they are incapable of consuming love from other changelings. both of these were proven false, and the latter once again calls into question Chrysalis' ability as a leader. She organised an invasion of a kingdom where the line between royalty and deity is blurry at best, instead of telling her subjects to not be assholes to each other at the very least, implementing a buddy system, and maybe organising some mandatory trust falls.

    quentin brandt that the problem with TV Tropes is knowing the name of the trop and hoping the episode you want will be on the list of exsamples that still doesn't have every exsample. Now for some reason I feel like theres a cartoon where someone said "I'm just soooo hungry" but I can't recall it. you're exsample was good too exsept Toothless never talks. I'm alway useing TV Tropes to remember episodes whose episode name and show name I'm forgetting but I can never figure out what trop name to use to conect to the episode I want to reference. and I know those lists are incompleet. anyhow, MLP does suffer from target audience and censorship as well as time restricting storytelling. treeting Thorax more like Zuko or Tuthless would be fun but its not the MLP way to turn Shinig Armor in to Kirk from Star Trek VI. Though I would love to see a mash up of that movie with this episode. So yah, MLP is a short, simpl, friendly kids show. it won't get as deep as Trek or Adventue Time. Even the EQG movies have more complex characters then Thorax and Shining Armor are right now.

    It mostly suffers from the TV rating limitation, TVY is a very restrictive area to be in, if it were to go up 1 rating to TVY7 we could see whole new plot threads open up that they could not do before due to limitations. Though it is interesting to see what they can get away with within that restrictive system I feel it does hold the writers back some.

    I understand why a lot of people say we shouldn't be overly critical of this show because it's "TV-Y". But I think it has been and still is just as smart and mature as any other TV-PG and upwards show out there. While the beginning of the third act seemed a bit rushed, the song made up for lack of time. Many professional stage musicals use this tactic. I really liked this episode more after re-watching too, not necessarily because I was less critical, but because I had some time to mull over the situation the episode presented a bit more. I still don't think people expect the level of complexity MLP has, and thus many episodes that present heavy issues need re-watches to be understood fully. I'm not saying the show is presenting anything particularly deep, or that the issue of tolerance is anything new for the show to cover, but with the lore and creature presented, it creates a whole new dynamic.

  • @connorjaneu3021

    Changelings are naturally a parasite. They need to feed off of others to survive. As far as any of the characters know, changelings can be nothing but evil. And it makes sense. They have justification to think this way. Thorax is an outlier. It's not like Starlight where she is just a pony like everyone else. It'd be like humans being attacked by sentient zombies, and then suddenly a zombie comes along that isn't evil, but still has the biological need to feed. Humans would have justified reasons to fear it, it needs to eat them to survive. However, it actively fights it's instinctual nature to better itself. Like Thorax. Maybe this'll help some people understand that even though the broad topic of tolerance has been covered again in this episode, there are more minute details that make a unique and fresh message.

    It is highly annoying the contempt which is shown to something which was villainous at one point. Like Discord for instance, aside from Fluttershy he wasn't really treated well or given a chance even though in "Keep calm and Flutter on" they were commanded too. In Starlights case they quickly embraced her, even though she nearly ruined the timeline for everyone; a much more grievous offence than the changeling invasion.

    Maximus Timaeus I think you should really take a moment to think about just how well being *assigned* to make friends with somebody, especially somebody dangerous and spastic like Discord, would pan out for anybody. Especially since he too did not exhibit any interest in making friends and the whole point of their doing so was to minimize the damage he caused. It's kind of like being friends with Haruhi Suzumiya. You have to be insane to try, and casual observation would paint her and Discord as wholly intolerable people.

  • @Maximus21x

    I suppose Discord was a bad reference when it is put like that. Perhaps my critique would be better represented by Twilight's contempt in "No second prances" towards Trixie?

  • @Dairo512

    @Dairo512

    7 жыл бұрын

    Maximus Timaeus That is a much better example, yes. Especially since Trixie was never actually a villain, except when she was being mind-controlled by the Alicorn Amulet. But that would be kind of like refusing to forgive Rarity (who is also arrogant and self-absorbed as often as not) for being controlled by the Manifestation Manual. On the other hand, it does show that the characters showing that contempt are flawed and have room to grow, and are able to do it. Twilight would be a boring character if she never did anything wrong.

    I don't get that song, "A changeling can change"? There was nothing about this guy _to_ change: We didn't see him actually _do_ anything during the invasion; he was timid and nervous from the moment he hatched. He's pretty much the _same_ except he's on different side. Now _Starlight_ changed: she went from malicious to soft-spoken in record time. 2:10 - I for one don't think that _not_ getting a redemption is a matter of whether or not cruelty is a sport. To me irredeemable people (whether they be good or evil) fall under three categories: The Divine; The Dead; The Determined; Also, I don't believe being a bad person and being sadistic are _exactly_ the same thing.

    When I first saw this episode, I was very down on it. My biggest issue was that the pacing felt rushed, and that the timing on everything, including the comedy, was completely awful. Which is unusual for MLP, since I've always found the direction and timing in the show to be exceptional for a cartoon, and one of the things that makes it so enjoyable. But on this one, it seemed really off and I felt like I was watching a completely different, much worse cartoon. I also felt like the ponies were being a bit too jerkish, as well as that while I loved the idea, the execution in general lacked. This episode immediately fell down as my least favourite episode ever. However, much like you, after rewatching it a few times, the episode has improved in my eyes. I still think all the previously mentioned flaws exist, but I think I was being a bit too harsh on it. It's not that bad an episode, and now I feel like it's in the "meh" or "alright" category. It's an ok episode, especially Spike's song is great (apart from a few super-cheesy lyrics), but probably not something I'll ever enjoy on the level of most episodes. I love most of the episodes, so whenever there's one that isn't as amazing, it feels much worse than it actually is.

    Spike...made me cry. *SPIKE*, The ultimate Butt Monkey in western animation, second only to Meg Griffon, made me cry. Well, I'm just gonna go hang myself in a hotel room tonight!! :LOL: Nah, j/k, I thought that was a great song. Who knew Cathy Weseluck could sing so beautifully?

    Brian Tyler Yeah, I suppose so. He does have his uses. :P Although, even though it's funny when ponies 'abuse' him, it's not so funny when his own species do it. :(

    I knew a girl who disliked humans because you know humans are so cruel in our world. That's why she disliked them and everyone thought that she is stupid, then why someone would defend Shining Armor here? He was stupid and awful in the same way here.
