I was struck at the almost "misterioso" development of the ideas up to the conslusion of that movement -- what seems to start as something almost "playful" becomes dark and somber at the end....what a genius Beethoven was...

Ok seriously I first heard this on WQED channel 13 in Pittsburgh PA. A blind pianist performed these sonatas every week. I still have the tape I made. I even learned another sonata op 14 number 2. I played the first movement at my last recital before I moved to Florida. 73

God damn that last half page is kicking my ass. Managed to get through the whole piece only for that monstrously difficult coda at 23:25 to show up at the very end 😂😭

@@FrankyyBalboano, probably not. He wasn't a composer who understood much, his knowledge was vast however. Later composers like chopin, scriabin, and wölfl definitely understood this piece if they heard it.

This is one of the few Beethoven sonatas where I find Gould's rendition to be exceptionally fine. First movement especially.

I had never heard either this or the Gould. I just checked out Gould, and I do love it. His humming always makes it feel like you're standing next to him at the piano.

i actually kind of like this tempo. It creates a dancelike quality without being too melodramatic. I think Moravec’s sensitivity is on 10 here. Totally understand your opinion though, the piece is chock full of interesting harmonies/textures :)
