@@gerrysteven5567 I agree with what you said but I think his point is that the south is not recognized to be put in the top ten. If they were in the top ten some ( not all ) but some of Eastcoast and Westcoast fans would look at South rappers as bigger heroes than their rappers . But I do respect your point.

@@actionverseentertainment9241 I honestly don't think there are southern rappers who are heroes. If there are, they aren't many of them. Look I understand everything Gipp has said but you will never see cats from other coasts behave like this aside from down south cats specifically Atlanta cats. Yes OutKast and Goodie Mob were booed at the 95 Source Awards, but they put everyone to shame and won album of the year eventually. And I recognize Outkast and the other folks contribution to HipHop, I even agree with Gipp that JayZ isn't #1for some of the reasons Gipp listed. But he needs to get over it.

Yo yo! I hear you gipp, ima New Jersey cat who lives in and loves Atlanta… When it comes to NY, It’s the birthplace of hip hop.. The saying goes, “if you can make it in NY, you can make it anywhere”, is very true.. The mentality and culture of NY is second to none.. United Nations, financial district, fashion district and black history.. The “Pad and Pen” and lyrics were serious for NY Artist painting pictures especially in the late 80’s and 90’s.. Groups like Tribe, De la, PE and brand Nubian didn’t rap bout money… Wu tang, guru, AZ was rapping bout knowledge of self, and spitting bars.. Every region is known for what they rap about… We love the south, 8ball and Mjg are dope as well as OutKast, goodie mob, Luda, mystikal, pimp c just to name a few.. Peace

I’m from Detroit and I agree with everything Gipp said. I’ve alaways had a great deal of respect for Artists from the South. So when i hear niggas from other areas saying they got from the mud, and i respect every grind, no rapper has had as hard as the ones from Atlanta, Mississippi, Texas and all over the South. Niggas from NY could literally get on the Subway and go to Def Jam. Southern artists didn’t have that type of easy access to a major label. They had no choice but to do they thing independently and i mean these guys was selling their tapes from the trunk of their cars and local rappers from Detroit was doing the same thing so thats why I can respect the hustle of southern rappers.

Gipp is mixing so many apples, oranges, and bananas together. It's ridiculous. I don't even know where to start. Rap started out as way for men to communicate and entertain men. That's why the standards and lyrical content were so high. By the time people like Dungeon Family showed up in the mid 90's, Rap was already transitioning on the international stage to mainnnstreentertainamment medium that the executives were trying to make palatable to the masses .The easiest was to do that was make music that appeals to females (Puff Daddy, JermaineDupri) or make music that breaks out of the traditional mold/standards created by NYC by doing something controversial and shocking( Luke Skywalker/NWA). The reason why many people were so critical of South and West Coast rappers is that they probably had a front row seat on the sidelines on what it took to develop Rap. The struggle from Dj's like Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Marley Marl, Mr Magic, Hank Luv, and Teddy Ted to get Rap accepted from the powers that be the music executives and radio program directors. You had to be the best of the best from a creative and lyrical standpoint. It's one of the reasons why most of the Rap created back then centered around positive, funny, or consciousness themes. When the south and west came out, the majority of their music centered around violence, drugs, and sexual themes topped off with weak lyrical content. Luda in my opinion the BEST rapper ever from the south based on NYC traditional golden age Rap standards. What people are failing to realize is there is no right or wrong. You like what you like. Rap is like jazz. There are many sub genres. It's like saying Kenny G is way better than John Coltrane. Gipp spoke on things from HIS perspective. However I think his opinion is flawed on Ludacris. First off Ludacris foundation is in NY. His parents were raised in Mt Vernon and Bronx. He has a large extended family there and he spent many summers and holidays there.I think that also influenced how well he rapped. So he is going be NY friendly because at his core he is NY. What is saying about being industry friendly is also a flawed argument. Back in the late 1980's and early 1990's Atlanta's only station V103 refused to play hip-hop. You had to listen to 88.5 Georgia State radio a show hosted and ran by Talib Shabazz. That was the first time hip-hop was played on the radio in Atlanta. Also it was the NY guys that used their influence to get V103 to start playing hip-hop. Most of the early hip-hop players (management, promotion and music executives) were majority NY or northeast guys. Even now it's still ran by them behind the scenes. Dungeon Family got luv in the north and east coast because they were REAL I don't think I've ever heard anybody said any bad about Dungeon Family So I don't think Ludacris ever got unrecognized, it's just that the politics and standards in Atlanta have moved in a different direction. Now rap artists get recognized more for what they do on social media and controversial stuff in the streets ( fighting, killing, and pranks) than the quality of their music. People now pay attention to the nonsense then double back to the music. It's crazy. Gipps talks about artists getting play in the strip club. That's because that was the main way records where promoted or broken in Atlanta before they started getting radio play. That's why he looks up to people like Luke Skywalker and 2Live Crew. If the girls danced to the record Luke never got luv in the north because nobody respected his talent as rapper. They thought his material was wack and a detrimental to the industry as a whole. NY rappers back in those times seldom ever used profanity in lyrics. So it wasn't necessary to go to the Supreme Court. However he is right about the Grammy ratings and selections with regards to the south. The whole industry is lost at this point. So unless he is going to lead the charge to reclaim it from the men in black suits he can't complain about what's going on because he had a front row seat when hip-hop got jacked from black people.

Nah this is the best comment, it's long as hell but all facts this shit needs to be pinned. You broke down the reason NY looked at the West and South funny in the beginning, I've been saying this even tho I love some West Coast and Southern rappers they did degrade the art form. They took it to new heights commercially for sure and expanded the genre but largely expanded it in negative ways. And the traps about violence and misogyny brought on by the West and South are still staples of the music today that holds the genre back.
