    Riding in groups is dangerous if you are a slow rider by nature, trying to keep up is deadly, don't do it, never let anyone else dictate your speed either from a group ride or a cage pushing to get past you, just ease to the left and let them go. Slow down and enjoy the scenery.

    I'm pleased to see that nothing bad happened. I would comment that this is why I'm not at all keen on riding in groups. I was watching this right from the start thinking that the pace was a bit too fast given the limited view and the tightness of the bends. I would add my voice to the call to "Slow down" and enjoy the scenery.

    Always place the slower riders and I would unashamedly include myself in that category, at the front to set the pace for the TEAM. That and you’re absolutely right, you’re there for the scenery and not to race. Track days are where you race so you don’t endanger or inconvenience others. We live in puritanical times and we must not supply the ammunition for the Karens to use against our beloved pass time.

    Yeh, doesn't going blazing fast sort of defeat the purpose of going to a nice scenic place instead of a race track? I mean at that point you're laser focused (or at least you should be) on the road ahead. Doesn't leave much time to enjoy your surroundings 🤔

    We’ve all done it. It was the blight of my youthful biking career forty years ago. Sure enough, I experienced it again when I became a born again biker! We psych ourselves out when arriving at a corner that we weren’t expecting and we freeze and go rigid. All ability to manoeuvre is lost. He did really well to stay up and Lady Luck was definitely riding pillion that day. The experience of miles under the belt and being placed at the front of the group where you can set the group pace are the cure. Ride your own ride and soak up the stunning scenery. You’re touring and not racing. ❤

    Lucky fella! Advanced training would help him learn about road positioning for a start. Some track riding instruction would also help in understanding how to relax on the bars and counter steer and teach him some visual skills. The camera man’s overtaking past that white car early on was also pretty dire - left no room for the car driver to potentially veer to the right.

My brother in law kept passing us on the straight on his cx650 turbo, but come the bends,,, creating dis-harmony.Have fun.

  • @FriendlyEllis
    @FriendlyEllis6 ай бұрын

    There's a few things here. Firstly, I don't think the speed was excessive but the rider brakes like that bend just suddenly appeared when it was clearly visible from a way away. He is central in his lane when he could have been using the road position more to get better visibility approaching each bend. The biggest mistake was using the back brake. When he feels he's approaching a bend that's too sharp for his speed, he stabs on the back brake (5.36) which immediately skids. This then panics him as he lost control and he stamps back on the back brake which puts it back into a skid and again he is out of control with the back of the bike just sliding out on the skidding tyre. He is very lucky there wasn't an oncoming vehicle. Back brakes are good for controlling speed at low speeds, u-turns, filtering etc When moving at speed, as you brake, your weight and the bikes weight moves to the front. There is very little weight, if any at all, pressing the rear wheel onto the tarmac. In fact, if you watch racers braking hard, often the rear wheel is not on the floor at all. Without any force, the rubber doesn't grip into the tarmac, it just skims across it as seen here. This rider should, without question do some advanced rider training like IAM. It's very in expensive and will save his life. It was pure chance he wasn't killed. If they'd been 5 seconds further ahead he'd have met one of those 2 cars they'd just passed. 5 seconds from death.

    Also, his position on right handers is all wrong....too close to the white line. He has a whole road to work with, use it. Also, the guy with the camera overtakes coming to a sloid white so rather than hang back, he overtakes the car on it's side of the road...again, poor. Having said that, we all go beyond our capabilities sometimes and get things wrong, it's all about learning, but you can't do that while eating hospital food. Riding too close in a group leads to target fixation on the bike in front, so usually 1 makes a mistake, others tend to follow.

Nearly took myself out trying to keep up with lads when I started riding, inexperienced with a fast bike = disaster! Done a lot of solo riding after that incident! But 90% of my runs now are with a regular bunch of guys where we all know each others styles of riding, the guy at the front holds a good pace, there is no pressure to keep up cause the guys will slow if someone starts to fall behind, and if someone knows the road and wants a scratch then they will blast on ahead and wait further down the road! Nice vid. I ride in groups and with known riders and we agree to ride to a code: a leader who does just that, a ‘sweep’ who is always at the rear, second man drop off (so there is no pressure on slower riders to keep up), observe speed limits, encourage advanced training such as ROSPA or IAM. As an alternative to second man drop off we also use ‘back marker’ where each rider maintains vision of the rider behind them. This means the group rides at the slowest riders pace. Another risk I see in group rides is when passing or being passed by other groups. Egos can get in the way.

    Group riding is at once one of the most pleasurable yet most dangerous motorcycle activities you can participate in. It's fun because you are out doing what you love with like-minded people, presumably heading for a common destination where you will likely regale each other with the "victories" of the day, (beginning with simply staying alive in the face of 4-wheeler adversity) ... and any and all threats the road and possibly even the weather were able to throw at you. All this will be recounted, hopefully, with everyone safe and sound, either over a fine lunch, or maybe at the end of riding, with a couple of pints of beer. The dangerous part(s) of group riding come(s) when the "dynamics" of being in a group on the road brings all sorts of negative influences into the mix. The need to "keep up", (whether you or your bike are capable), the tendency to stay close (and ignore "normal /safe" following distances), the inclination to watch what the others in the group are doing, ahead and behind, (when you should be keeping a closer eye on your own circumstances), the natural inclination to "compete" (who wants to arrive last?!), and the overt exhilaration of just being "out there" with the gang. It's ALL quite capable of being a recipe for disaster, and frequently is. Be EXTRA, EXTRA CAREFUL when riding in GROUPS!

    Classic loss of concentration… road warnings were all there, chevrons etc.. took the wrong line out from the first hairpin which kept him to the near side of the second hairpin… reducing speed and keeping to the right of centre , in your lane, would’ve been a doddle and ultimately got through the bend smoother 👍, we’ve all been there and every days a learning day lol…. Re-wtched that corner at half-speed; he locked rear wheel just before the corner, then couldnt steer, panicked and locked on. As others have said, approach right of lane centre on front brake, counter steer and trail brake - would have made that easy. I remember feeling that stiff on my first ride on country twisties after passing my test - it felt horrible. Watched heaps of videos on handling and gradually learnt counter steering and trail braking. Counter steer takes care of itself now and can't immagine not trail braking. Overtake of white car was horrendous. He let himself be governed by the upcoming solid white line. Should have pulled back in or stayed in outside lane clear of car regardless of white line as clear ahead. Last thing to do was try to cut in before the line. A previous close overtake remarked on by the camera man makes three howlers from half a dozen riders in such a short space of time. Yikes.

    Since I have learnt trail braking I have never got a bend wrong nor fear them. I have made this comment several times about TB and get abuse from the “advanced motorists” types. The system they use is 70yrs old. Trail braking needs to be taught. It works in fast cars too ie heel and toeing taught by rally drivers. Stabilises the suspension not unsettles it.

Followed by an illegal overtake (solid white line) by the rider in front, who was later lucky to not have a serious RTC and followed by you possibly trying to not do an illegal overtake by staying within the solid white line whilst no more than a foot or two from the white car @ 4.33. Far too much pressure on riders (self inflicted?) to ride outside their skill level when riding in a group and not ride their own ride and this video highlights that brilliantly! 😏

As he approached the left hander he must have thought he was going too fast into the bend which possibly he wasn't, but nevertheless he suddenly stood on the back brake, locking up the rear wheel causing his bike to skid which is when he lost control and crossed over onto the other side of the road potentially into oncoming traffic. He was very lucky no other vehicles were approaching from the opposite direction around the bend otherwise he could well have been fatally injured. He should have applied front brake, counter steering leaning the bike over, shifting his weight slightly off the saddle and his bike would have taken him around the bend. He needs to improve his riding skills. Lucky to be alive.
