Itt is a beautiful piece but to say that it is THE most beautiful piece a bit presumptuous. Actually, no such thing - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Rachmaninoff went into a depression after a disastrous first symphony and consulted a hypnotherapist. The result of his recovery was this 2nd Symphony and his Second Piano Concerto, which I'll be requesting later. Eric Carmen also wrote a popular song based on the second movement of that Piano Concerto.

Thank you for this video and your reaction! Eric Carmen used this melody in a song he wrote that was popular in the 1970s, "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again." It appears on his first solo album, ERIC CARMEN (1976). He also used Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (Adagio) on that same album for his very popular song "All By Myself," which has been covered extensively even recently. I think there are other hints of Rachmaninoff on the album, but I would have to listen to it again before being definitive about it.

Eric Carmen got in a bit a trouble for it too. He thought at the time he wrote the songs that the music was public domain, but it wasn't. 12% of the royalties for both songs went to the Rachmaninoff estate after everything was settled.
