I would say Lu Yufei and Li Shijia are locks, I'm hoping Tang Xijing too. For the fourth spot I have no idea, both Guan Chenchen and Ou Yushan can bee amazing but they are very inconsistent. Liu Tingting or Qi Qi don't look that good at the moment, we will see. What is your prediction?

I honestly have no idea! I saw that mathematically, the top team would be Lu Yufei and Li Shijia on AA + Guan Chenchen's VT and BB and Ou Yushan's UB and FX. I don't think that's likely, though, given Ou and Guan both seemed inconsistent and having another strong, experienced AA gymnast like Tang Xijing is definitely in China's interest.

her turns are some of the best i’ve ever seen. she keeps her free leg in position the *entire* time, and she’s almost exactly precise! [edit: grammar]

that GOMEZ was so quick , i watched it 3 times and couldn't see thee 4 turns, so i i had to slow it down to see all four turns

Never surprised ME anyway in the least. She is a very solid competitor. She's like a Grace McCallum or Laurie Hernandez . Dependable and string even if difficulty score here or there is not at par for an Olympic all around medal, but for a Team Final. Yeah I'd count on her. But yeah an underdog. Been screaming for this gymnast to be noticed for a couple years now =}

I'm really glad she had her moment to shine! Consistency is honestly a major issue for Team China (ie 2019 TF) and Lu seems to be delivering on that front. In honesty, I think that picking a reliable team ought to be higher up on the priorities list for the Chinese federation, which would definitely help Lu's chances at a Tokyo spot.

IMO her beam score is too high. She had several small bobbles and long pauses not deducted. But I am so impressed with her, especially her consistency!

I agree - I initially deducted for pauses, but the core ended up being much lower than the actual, so I figured they didn’t deduct as much on issues like that. I was very impressed by her execution on the elements, though! Besides the layout, everything seemed quite strong.

First video I've seen from this channel but you've definitely got my subscription! Love the analysis and presentation. I definitely would have deducted more for the pauses on beam, she's going to have to speed up to avoid the time penalty. I love her Memmel so much!

Awesome, thank you! I also initially deducted on the pauses, but the score became quite low -- I try to match with the competitions somewhat, and it seems they didn't consider those. She did manage to make it under time in the event final, which was great to see!

That is another world standard because each score or point gained or deducted by the judges on each gymnast's performance will clearly and fairly be displayed to the audiences too to fix the doubt or stop the cheat. I do support such scoring.

She reminds me so much of Liu Xuan ♡

what's the point of the last straddle jump-ring jump. It doesn't seem to add any points for difficulty or connection.

The Chinese team is a bit difficult to predict. First of all, the entire nation is very focused on BB and even their UB program is weaker than it used to be. So they need a good vaulter and floor worker. Second, a lot of them are inconsistent, and don’t produce the results they were expected to. I would take: Ou Yushan Liu Tingting Li Shijia Tang Xijing I would’ve taken Qi Qi since she is a very good vault/floor worker but I’ve seen that she downgraded lately so I’m not sure when she will go back to her original form. I don’t know if China has another individual spot other than Fan Yilin... it would’ve been really nice for Jia Fangfang to take it, but I’m not sure if she’s training artistic gymnastics anymore. Her form is textbook, insanely perfect and it’s a shame that she probably won’t be in the Olympics. Otherwise, I guess the spot goes to another beam worker... not sure who.

I really hope they don't leave their national champion at home, Lu Yufei is the only one who won two titles this week and she looked quite consistent. I agree with Li Shijia and Tang Xijing, I would add Lu Yufei. The fourth spot is up for grabs, Tingting, Chenchen or Yushan all can take it.

I was fully onboard with the team that you described prior to these championships, but I imagine that Ou Yushan's spot is less certain now given her inconsistency and Lu Yufei's superb performances. I wish China had another Cheng Fei-esque gymnast with world-class vaulting and floor exercise; that could really complete their team.

It's amazing how everyone criticize Chinese Nationals' judges for being "unnecessary picky", "too harsh" and "where are all the deductions come from" (c), while it's the only competition in the gymnastics world with fair judges, who take all the deductions without preferences.

I like the Chinese judging a lot! I thought they were actually a bit lenient this year (especially regarding pause deductions), but it's nice to see that they aren't gypping their athletes of high scores.

@@volodymyrdolia6544 At least people acknowledge the fact that the gymnasts are overscored at US competitions. It is baffling to see you say the scores at this competition were fair. The gymnasts weren't overscored by just 1-3 tenths (which is already too much). The 2020 American Cup judging was harsher than this.

Make your analysis to make your point about "every gymnasts were overscored more than 3 tenths" valid. And especially you are most welcome to do American Cup analysis, since it sounds like a big fantasy)

I didn't realize that -- if you look at it frame by frame (use the period and comma keys) it actually does look like she hit the bar. Good catch!! I don't think that the judges took a deduction for it given how high her score was; it didn't really seem to interrupt her flow.

Did you deduct for hitting the low bar at 0:47?

If she does the tsuk double I think she could surprise for an AA bronze medal in Tokyo. She would have 23.4 AA difficulty. The Russians and Murakami all have 23.2, and her form is better than the Russians and equal to Murakami’s.

I won't lie, I've watched that Gomez turn four times LOOKING for that precision deduction and haven't been able to find it. She finishes it perfectly in line with where she started. Her foot doesn't come down too early. Any insight as to why you took that particular deduction on that turn?

@@marythiccmas Precision is defined as: “Each movement must demonstrate perfect control in each phase, as well as a clear start and finish position.” With the abrupt/awkward finish, I would say that she didn’t demonstrate perfect control.

@@jasonsmith2754 It wasn't an uncontrolled finish to her turn either. Just because it LOOKS awkward because it doesn't flow into her choreography doesn't mean she wasn't in control. It was a controlled landing as far as turns go.

It seems to me, that with so many gymnasts doing incredible things, it should come down to minute details. The gymnast from China did not stick the landing after her vault and she baubled on the balance beam and she always took an extra step on her landings during her floor excersize. I did not see the other gymnasts and maybe they had more deductions. That being said, the group from China is amazing.

After these championships Li Shijia and Lu Yufei are locks. If either Tang Xijing or Ou Yushan bring the DTY back they’re also locks. I think if they don’t though, they could be replaced by someone who does have a vault (Guan Chenchen, Zhang Jin, probably Qi Qi) or by someone with stronger bars (Liu Tingting, Wei Xiaoyuan). Basically everyone in China can cover beam and floor so it all comes down to that last vault and bar routines. Although I do think Ou Yushan, Guan Chenchen, and LTT chances went down a lot because they either fell on beam or didn’t compete it

Congrats on the video!! Very good format. I disagree with the E score for Beam and Floor since you got no deductions from her pauses throughout the routines and preparation for elements. Specially in floor, she stood too long on the corners. And for beam in her Front Aereal + Split Jump, she flexed her fleet, had an angle and balance issue. Nevertheless, congrats again and keep going!

Is it really the case that "slow connection" (in reference to the Switch Ring + Ring + BHS combo on her beam) is a mark off the E score? That's odd to me. I would assume it would simply be removed bonus and there for a ding to the D score. Either way the math is the same, but just seems like the wrong place for that.

It's a bit subjective, but connections vary from great (connection granted, no slow connection deduction) to bad (no connection granted). Somewhere in the middle is the slow connection deduction, which is when the skills are connected enough to justify a D score bonus but aren't perfectly fluid or fast.

General observation: the deductions are so strict! 100% of the judges couldn’t do any of these routines. Even Fan Ye’s textbook BB routine from 2003 Worlds got deductions. Gives whole new meaning to “no such thing as perfection.”

What does the judges being able to do the routine have to do with anything? I'm not defending the judges at all, but really? That's like saying that an art critic can't judge or critique a painting unless they can do it as well as the artist.

Saying a coach can’t coach because they can’t do the routines and saying the Judges’ standards are ridiculous are like apples and oranges. Coaches have a keen understanding of how much hard work goes into perfecting each and every nuance, and every deduction is a reminder that they haven’t done enough. Judges, like many critics of all ilks, may just be better served if their focus isn’t some moving target of what perfection should look like. Diving judges rewards (near) perfections. Gymnastics judges find all sorts of excuses to say: meh, not good enough.

What the hell is body shape? Congrats Lu Yufei!!

I think there are deductions when the gymnast is on the corner of the floor and does nothing for too long. Also there might be lack of artistry and disconnection to the music. By the way, awesome Chanel!

She would probably replace Liu Tingting. Chow Liang actually said after the 2019 disaster that they will rearrange the team. Tingtings chance after that disaster just diminished to unless she can pull a miracle. But so far no chance.

my dad is a judge and I can tell you there's no 'off center' deduction on vault as long as the gymnast stays within the boundaries

I can tell you that either you are lying about your dad being a judge or our dad doesn’t know the rule because I have found in different sites (including USA gymnastics site) that you can het up to 0.3 in deductions for “deviation from straight line” (I.e. off center deduction)

I love her bars and beam work however that layout tsukuhara full should have been downgraded to a pike honestly. Judges are way too lenient with what is and isn't a layout vault and I feel as if it's just setting her up for failure. I saw the vault at 2021 national games and it has not got any better.

No deductions for hitting the low bar after the healy? :O

I actually missed that! I think the judges missed it too (it was quite quiet and her swing wasn't really interrupted) given her score.

Overall Chinese judging is great but I don’t think they deduct enough for long pauses. For the most part they have beautiful choreography but seemingly in every routine at nationals there are awkwardly long pauses before skills

It can be frustrating when the deductions aren't implied evenly (see: gymnasts from some countries receiving fewer artistry deductions because their country is seen as "balletic" and "artistic" while other countries without footing are deducted heavily), but I think that the deductions here were fair. Precision on a turn is important, otherwise people would just spin as far as they could to make sure they get the required rotation, and the artistry deductions were to account for the frequent pauses that Lu had. They allowed her to refocus and perform super well, but the code does say they should be deducted for ://

Someone who would be HONEST, NEEDS to do a scoring analysis LIKE THIS, WITH video in front of them--LIKE this-- to show the MANY deductions SIMONE BILES, JORDAN CHILES, SHILESE JONES and others ---ALL, who have MANY more deductions that are NEVER GIVEN--- ON ALL events! "Emotional want" is a big problem with HONESTY AND --OBJECTIVENESS taking BACK SEAT ---VERY FAR BACK!

Is it just me or has gymnastics become depressing to watch because of all the excessive deductions and increasingly stringent codes? Like we used to have all around score that went above 60! Those were such great times. People had beautifully choreographed routines and good execution. I seriously beg the FIG to bring these codes back otherwise it would mean a slow end to gymnastics

Once again, when it comes to China, Russia or the US, you re way too lenient. She missed at least one handstand on the uneven bars and she deserved a deduction of 0.5 instead of 0.3 on beam for losing balance. I'd apply other minor deductions here and there on floor. I'm kind of losing interest in your channel when I notice how biased your judgment is, actually.

Hi! I don't intend to be biased, but I do try to match scores with competitions. That means that at domestic competitions, especially in Russia and the United States, the scores end up being higher than I initially calculated. I don't feel right giving out scores that are 0.4 or 0.5 lower than what was actually awarded in competition, even if that's how I originally scored the gymnast, because I want to show what actually happened at the competition and sometimes can't do that without being lenient. Regarding Lu, I did deduct for handstands (0.3 on the Healy and 0.1 on the Ling) but considered more in deductions, and I initially had a lower floor score too (minor deductions like excessive preparation). I still think that 0.3 balance on beam is in order because she responded quite quickly and didn't have super excessive arm swings/movements besides her one main movement to the side, but that's obviously a bit subjective. I hope that clears things up, and I hope you understand why scores may seem to vary from video to video :)

I'm not really impressed overall. Her best apparatus is the UB. Her beam scoring was generous.

she was over score on b beam, her best exercise was floor, her vault landing not the best, the step was too long, her turns are amazing and in general she is a great gymnast with beautiful lines and very elegant

She doesn't always get the time penalty, at least from what I've seen? She took much longer in this AA routine than she did in, say, the beam event final.

That was a low vault score. Does that not worry you when China’s highest scoring all around had such a low scoring vault?

She is training a Double Twisting Tsukahara Layout, which has 5.6 in difficulty, 0.2 more than the Double Twisting Yurchenko.

I actually am repulsed when I see the tiny deductions here and there. I actually think it is quite ridiculous. The sport is stupid and really doesn't realize that the bulk of the fans that attend live events are not experts and actually like the idea of the goal of perfection. The biggest mistake in the sport was changing the scoring system and removing the perfect 10. Certainly scoring could have been a bit fine tuned, but allowing for perfect 10's should have still been in play. Most don't get the current scoring which greatly increases confusion and disinterest. Thats why at major competitions over the years (prior to Covid), major stadiums are practically empty.

@Carrot Cake hi. I’m not going to argue with you but I believe you missed my whole point. The majority of “fans” that go to competitions like Olympics or Worlds really only know the basics. Most collegiate stadiums fill up more than major international competitions. Why? Because people love the idea of a perfect 10. The excitement of it. It may not seem simple to you but believe me, basic fans(which are the majority) find it far simpler to follow than today’s scoring. The sport isn’t doing itself any favors and it has loss a huge fan base. It may not seem that way to you, but it is a fact.

I believe Lu has trained a double twisting Tsukahara (worth 5.6) that she may attempt in future competitions, although I may be mistaken. I do wish we would see more Amanars too, but I’m glad gymnasts aren’t throwing them when they’re unprepared just for start value.

only simone and jade have an Amanar at this stage (maybe Jordan, but definitely not Leanne and Grace after their injuries), and Jade isn't even on the team.

“Lack of body shape” would apply to every female American gymnast.

Very poor dance elements and choreography on floor, no connection between elements. Score on floor very generous.
