Lt Gen Silveria addresses cadets about racism incident

Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria, along with USAFA leadership, addressed the entire Cadet Wing and USAFA Preparatory School today. Lt. Gen. Silveria left no uncertainties that racism has no place at the Academy.

"The appropriate response to a horrible idea is a better idea." TBF, that's only true if the person with the horrible idea has their ears and mind open. White supremacists do not.

And frankly, that quote is a little out of place in a military setting. I don't mean to demean this guy at all, but he's sort of in the wrong business to be saying that. The military is the antithesis of diplomacy.

@ibieiniid It's an academy with a strict code of conduct. Acceptance is not easy. You have to be nominated amongst other requirements. Cadets do not have to be there. So, they can get out. Would you prefer the cadets' leaders have a group hug?

As of now, 28 people (who disliked) need to get out. This is what patriotism looks like. This is what being an American looks like. This is what being a decent human being looks like. This is what respect looks like. This is what being presidential looks like.

John Labus I bet General Silveria will tell you he and his soldiers are fighting for you to have the privilege and right to have free speech, and they are also fighting for those who exercise their free speech to disagree with you. We are not N. Korea yet, are we?

Yes. We are all entitled to our free speech but clearly this hate has no place in our military. I support our troops and what they stand for. Clearly those who dislike this video would have no place in his military academy.

Probably the greatest speech that I've heard in a while. I never had any interest about being in the military even I grew up in a military family, but this man made me what to be near him and to be as great as him. I've only heard 2 speeches from him, but I've so much from it. And as a Chinese international student, I truly appreciate your message.(Please ignore my awful grammar)

Nick Siekierski its not nice to write racial slurs... People will always speak out against things like that. You are free to cotinue the biggotry but people on the right side of history-like this general- will always speak out. So continue... And we will continue to be social justice warriors. Like MLK

Nick, pay attention... this is a LEADER and an agent of unity. Let's put silly little concepts aside for a moment - like "All Men Are Created Equal". And let's just focus on the fact that the military has a vested interest in unity among the ranks. They all need to be on one unified team with a singular mission. If nothing else, divisiveness is not good for business... PLUS, you're wrong... when everyone is a sheep (as you put it), that's when good leadership is needed most. Open your mind, young Nick, there is still time for you.

True leadership doesn't win elections. The problem isn't our system, the problem is us and our unwillingness to think for ourselves or at least to choose leaders who are actually skilled at leading. Instead, people choose who they "like" based on how charismatic they are and how much they think they align with their personal beliefs.

You are a prime example of all that is ethical in America. You are a prime example of all that is good about America. If those perpetrators of racist messages come forward with the sincerest of apologies and regret for what they did, perhaps they might be extended a second chance, but only with strong conditions. You are the commander of the Air Force Academy, and you, as well as ALL military commanders, must show America that this disgrace is not the history nor the future of America. God bless you, Sir, and may your message have a great effect on all who listen to it.

I have waited for SOMEONE in authority in American government to make a statement like this for longer than I care to think. General Silveria calls out racism *IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS* and tells those who wish to practice it EXACTLY WHAT TO DO. Thank you very much, General Silveria. You make me proud to be an American.

Moral of the story: If you cant treat another with dignity and respect, *then gtfo of America cuz you aint a real American!* Edit: Common sense is needed in the comments section. If someone is treating another with disrespect because prejudicial bias, THAT PERSON SHOULD BE CALLED OUT FOR IT, NOT "respected" like the rest. Duh. And yah, that includes all individuals whom this country has adopted, willingly or not, past or present, as "leaders".

jjoe50020023 he literally made light of sexual assault he’s not some who deserves dignity nor respect. Literally millions of American lives are at risk in PR right at this moment and he’s not shown that he cares one bit. The only difference between them and the Houston/Floridians is that they are brown and speak Spanish. They are literally American citizens and he’s minimizing that emergency over some football players exercising their rights. How has this man earned anyone’s respect?

So many comments here regarding what was discovered after the fact. For me, it all boils down to: "When in charge, TAKE charge" Given the information he had at the time, I feel his speech was outstanding. Even in retrospect, regardless of the later discoveries about the perpetrator, his words are still just as honest, and powerful, and meaningful as they needed to be at the moment. I salute you, Sir.

While I certainly respect your position as 1SG, as a former SGT (E5) myself, I can't imagine a situation where a 1SG would drag the guilty soldier in front of the formation and say that. Nor can I imagine a 1SG referring to the guilty soldier as a 'fucker' or a 'racist shit bag.' To me, that action would seem more divisive than a group meeting asking for unity against Racism (regardless of the race of the eventual guilty person or people who did it.) Putting that guilty soldier in front of the entire formation and telling them of his guilt is just asking for "soldier-on-soldier justice" so2speak which is not condoned by the US Military, let alone a direct violation of one of my two most basic responsibilities, being "... the welfare of my soldiers ..." All soldiers, guilty or not. The Military's UCMJ should handle guilt and punishment; Not parading an individual soldier in front of a formation to their potential peril afterward. Just my humble personal thoughts on the matter.

Angb Rwill There are a lot of simplistic cliches and empty talk in your comments. You are regurgitating alt-right and alt-left talking points that sound like Russian propaganda. We did have a good candidate who received millions more votes than the one who is currently occupying the White House. If you are really an American, and not happy with the status quo, and you love your country, then go out there and change it. Don't whine, vote.
