LSWR T3 Class - 563 | Supporters Launch Day - Swanage Railway 07/10/2023

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After 6 years of significant planning, hard work, dedication, and determination, LSWR T3 Class - 563 has returned to traffic on the Swanage Railway. The occasion would be marked with an official launch day of the locomotive, with invited guests, supporters of the Trust, and volunteers being given the chance to take a trip behind 563; and therefore becoming the first passengers to be hauled by the locomotive in over 78 years.
The locomotive was previously owned by the National Railway Museum, and became the subject of a series of negotiations with the Swanage Railway in the mid-2010’s. This eventually led to 563 being deaccessioned from the NRM in 2017, with ownership being fully and formally transferred to the Trust on the 30th of March 2017, and 563 arriving on the railway on the 12th of April. In the November, 563 was transferred to the Flour Mill workshop in the Forest of Dean for a feasibility assessment, to explore the idea of overhauling 563 back into steam. It was during this assessment that it was discovered that the mechanicals of the chassis were in far better condition than anticipated, showing little to no signs of use. However, the boiler would require a completely new inner firebox. The project was given the go ahead by the Trust, in conjunction with an aggressive fundraising campaign to raise funds for the work that lay ahead. 6 years later, and the Trust can finally enjoy the fruits of their efforts, with 563 in steam once more.
During the first hours of sunlight, 563 was being prepared for the day while on shed, with oiling and last minute cleaning taking place. U Class - 31806 also had a role to play, as it provided motive power for a feeder service, taking passengers to Swanage in time for the following ceremony, and services with 563. Once the T3 had backed itself into platform 2 at Swanage, the ceremony would begin with speeches from the following: Nathan Au - Chairman of the 563 Locomotive Group, Gavin Johns - Swanage Railway Trust Chairman, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset Angus Campbell, Anthony Coulls - Senior Curator of the National Railway Museum, and Sir Philip Williams - President of the 563 Locomotive Group. Sir Philip Williams would also be given the honour of cutting the ribbon on the cab of 563, officially launching the locomotive into service. After the formalities, 563 would complete two return trips over the Swanage branch between Swanage and Norden, ferrying the invited congregagtion through the Isle of Purbeck, before retiring back onto shed at the end of the momentous day.
The locomotive stands as testament to the continued hard work and dedication demonstrated by the Swanage Railway Trust 563 Locomotive Group, and all those involved in bringing the Victorian icon back to steam.

great to hear they will be taking on the Drummond T9 also. That engine needs some attention and would look great to see it back in Southern Olive green. My congratulations to the 563 team and their supporters to bringing back a legend of early railways.

Not afraid to admit that when the crew of 31806 gave her a whistle as she left I did get a tad emotional 😄 Superb video or a wonderful event. What an incredible achievement, and hats off to everyone who made it possible.

Well done SR for providing those Maunsell coaches in the consist - these could well be authentic as they would be old enough to have been pulled by 563 when she was in service. Always slightly disappointed if I get to ride behind a historic steam engine and then find myself in a Mark 1 coach with those ghastly fluorescent light fittings.

Absolutely - the T3s worked on the line between the wars so it could well have been an authentic recreation of a journey 80-90 years ago! And those coaches are also more comfortable than modern ones!

This is the future, not another spamcan or five. Antony Coulls made the right decision as did the rest of you, now I and everyone else can enjoy a real and true treasure from the best days of the railways in Britain, not trapped in a museum gallery and without any missing pieces namely the fire and boiling water. I am so proud of all of you and I cannot wait to see this beautiful locomotive alive and steaming in person.

.... and heartfelt thanks to the postwar Southern's team at Eastleigh, who collectively managed to not quite understand the management's intention to get this old beauty just about able to limp to Waterloo and back to the scrapheap, instead doing a top job on the chassis before they were rumbled, thus laying the groundwork for this superb restoration !!! Glorious .... simply glorious. Congratulations to the entire team, to the Swanage Railway Trust and let's not forget thanks to the NRM.

I’m so so pleased to see the T3 in service. In 2017 once the engine was transferred. I was so pleased to see the possibility that the locomotive could return to steam. Fast forward to this weekend, I sadly wasn’t able to attend due to my own Railway volunteering commitments. But I would like to say I was there in spirit. I look forward to coming back to Swanage in the new year to see & ride behind 563. A huge round of applause to the 563 Loco group, you will no doubt inspire more museum engines to return.

Thanks for a great record of the day's events. You've got better sound quality on the speeches than some people got on the platform! Anthony Coulls made a particular impression. And of course it's great to see the shots of the engine actually hauling a passenger train for the first time for 78 years (at least!). Superb lineside shots as always.

That will be quite a tourist attraction. Although Joe Public probably thinks all chuffers are the same, partly because of the trend to paint them all in drab BR liveries.

A "QUICKY" REPAIR FOR A SHORT TERM IN SERVICE ??? Why is the cab front made of thin wood ??? As seen at 6:09 - 6:13. I suspect that this loco has been given only a short term "ticket" so may only see a season or two in use, as the boiler barrel may be near to life expiry, before it has to go back into the NRM !!!!

  • @TheSouthernerYTChannel

The cab is metal. But as per LSWR livery under Dugald Drummond as depicted here, locomotives cab interiors were painted in a grained Pine. When the overhaul of this locomotive has been so well publicised and transparent, and so publicly documented, such an unfounded claim seems particularly foolish.

  • @NickLloyd-gj1cs

    @NickLloyd-gj1cs

The scumbling on the inside of the cab was obviously a good idea, if it's that convincing! I have to say I'm not sure that at times during the six-year, over half-a-million pound overhaul that it really felt like a 'quickie repair'. Much of the work that has been done will last a couple of boiler tickets, let alone a couple of years.

You clearly and absolutely seem to have not one clue what you are on about. The overhaul/restoration has been comprehensive and the 563 group in conjunction with the Flour Mill workshops and Herston works staff deserve the highest praise for their work. Perhaps do your research before making such unfounded and dense comments.
