This week of recovery has been full of disappointment and hope. I started Physical Therapy for my foot drop and I am hopeful that it will help rebuild my strength in my foot and shin.

I’m at 6 weeks post op L5-S1 microdiscectomy. After speaking to several people who have gone through this surgery, the consensus I’ve come across is everyone heals at different speeds and the nerves are what take the longest (even up to a year). I didn’t have any leg pain, or foot drop, etc, my biggest issue during this recovery have been back spasms (especially from week 2 to week 5). The 5 day steroid pack I took (prednisone) helped a lot with pain reduction but the insomnia was horrible. I hope that it works great for you, has the doctor mentioned taking tramadol or gabapentin? I’ve heard some folks have taken that during their recovery to aid with nerve pain. Anywho, I wish us all the best during this confusing recovery. Glad to hear you’re doing PT already,

I had this same surgery (L4-L5 also) back in September 2020. Had very similar issues you have had. I have struggled with numbness in my peroneal nerve from the knee down since immediately following the surgery. Sounds like your medical team was much better than mine. My surgeon didnt send me to PT for the foot drop for THREE months and only after me requesting it multiple times. I still struggle with my ankle giving out pretty regularly because my muscles arent working correctly down there and probably never will. :( It sounds like youre making great progress and I hope you continue to see improvement in your nerve pain/function. While it totally sucks this happened to you, it was really nice to see this video and not feel so alone in this as many people dont seem to understand what I am going through in losing the ability to do a lot of things I loved because my leg/foot wont work properly.

I'm so glad you're improving- and your spirits up* Yes trust the process, everythings going to be okay ,may not look like it from this point but it will, when I had my total right hip replacement surgery my right foot dragged to I used my knee to lift up and walk and I had to use a walker and an electric car at the store lol omg but I'm 110% better today and I can still do everything that I used to so I have all the hope for you! You got this 🙏❣️❣️

Hey there, keep hopeful. I had my surgery on September 16th, 2022. I had numbness in my left foot before surgery and still have numbness. The nerves take a long time to heal, 1mm per day avg but from what my surgeon told me is that with different sensations in my foot (pain, tingly, etc) Is a good sign Of healing. I been having a few different sensations after a few months of surgery and staying active. I know people that took 1.5 years for the nerves to heal. Listen to your PT and docs and stay positive!
