Low Visibility Cruising Off NJ Coast | Helmsman Trawlers 38E

Hello!
In this "one take" video I take you along a foggy journey along the NJ Coast (about 3 miles offshore in the Atlantic heading towards NYC).
Trip planning is important (tide, current, wave, wind, weather, etc) and developing your own personal "Go/No Go" criteria is important. Today we anticipated reduced visibility so here's a video how we approach this specific sea state.
Don't forget - any questions, please reach out to me and let me know if you do something different in low viz conditions.
Cheers,
Greg Messerle

Nice job with your videos. 3/4 NM range setting on your radar in fog at 8 Kns is not ideal IMO. You may want to increase that 2 miles when offshore. I run a dual on my Furono. Offshore; One at 1 to 2 miles and the other at 4 to 6 miles. In harbors I take it down to 3/4 to 1 Nm on overlay like you have.

Hi Bill - thanks for sharing your approach. I was adjusting my range rings yesterday from as little as 1/2 mile to 2 miles, but didn't even think of going out to 4+ miles. I'll have to try that next time! Thanks..

I might add that a good idea is to set one VHF radio to "Dual Watch" so you can also monitor commercial channel 13. Especially in commercially busy areas like New York harbor.

Magnus is doing great today on the ocean. there are no waves to speak of but plenty of 3' swell every 5 sec or so, plus passing vessels throwing wake.. Best I can tell it takes about 0.2 knots of "normal" speed when deployed.

You're 100% right - great suggestion. I had receiving mode during this video and now that we have our MMSI number we are transmitting as well. Thanks for the comment, Greg
