Low End Guitar with High Quality - LTD EX100

Музыка

Today on restring Sunday we take a look at a made in Korea ESP LTD EX100.
It's got some modifications but overall for a low end guitar it's REALLY good quality. I think this may have something to do with where and when it was made.

I love LTDs, but their prices have gotten pretty high for what they are. I think Harley Benton is exposing guitar companies for their price gouging. You can get an HB guitar with a Floyd Rose 1000 bridge and stainless steel frets for just over $300.

Low end LTDs are honestly amazing things even to this day. I have an H-200 (obviously no where near the age of this one) - it's made of Mahogany, has a set neck and it plays incredible. They're under £500 new and I got mine for £200 second hand. I'll probably be dropping some new pickups in it, but the guitar itself feels great.

Guitarist from Atreyu used this exact model for many years. Before the logo change, LTDs were made only in Korea mostly from Japanese sourced parts, 1996-2003 LTD-s are beasts, back then there werent too many models like today, LTD was just a production version of the ESP models, they came packed with Duncan H102 which are pretty good pups, or high end models with EMG's. People easily get fooled, especially when they see LTD on the headstock. Doing a quick Wayback search you can see that a ESP Eclipse costed 800$ in the 90s, and the only LTD variant in 2001 was EC 300 that costed 700$, and has superior specs to the ESP model (mahagony set neck, better binding, mop inlays...) converted to todays $ due to inflation, it would be a 1200$+ guitar. It literally surpases Gibson Customs (closest similar guitar to be compared with) in terms of build quality and feel. Edit: most of the LTD guitars from that period were only made for a super short time, and the quality drasticlly decreased in 2003 when they moved factories. Tho I understand, because why would anyone buy an ESP if you can get a LTD with same or even superior specs, quality and sound for less money.

Back then when ESP doesn't have any issue displaying the letters "ESP" at or near the headstock (the truss rod cover) of an LTD. After that even the standard production ESP was renamed as E-II. Such a let down for a standard production line from ESP made in Japan. In this aspect, Ibanez is the best, at least for a major brand. The lowest model, Gio, still carries the name "Ibanez", and most guitarist know to differentiate the model and the quality between Gio, entry standard models, Premium, Japanese standard, to a Prestige or J-Craft Ibanez

I've played guitars made all over Asia. I bought a cheap Jackson dinky made in India at a flea market for $15. I cleaned it up, set it up and sold it to a beginner guitarist for $60. I also bought a crackle finish B.C. Rich Warlock NJ made in Korea for $65 off of craigslist. I cleaned it up, set it up and got $480 for it on ebay. I've played Vietnamese LTD guitars and for the money they were great. I think we were in a golden era for well made cheap guitars until the recent inflation took hold.

I am with you on the LTD ESP guitars. I picked up an 2011 LTD ESP Custom Deluxe EC-1000T in black off Craig's List for $150 about 10 years ago. After some minor fret repair at the 12th -14th frets, (I think it was dropped and put a very slight but bad enough string snag there) and adjusted the intonation. To this day, one of my favorite guitars and gig stand-by. Restrings is all I have ever really done to it. When I restring, I also polish my frets. This guitar came with locking tuners and EMG pick-ups. I bought my American made Fender Strat new. It was way more expensive than what this LTD would have cost new. My Strat is a couple of years older, but has needed a new neck and a pick up replaced. You can still get really good deals on these guitars.

I can confirm that the action on LTD and Dean guitars made in that era/factory were amazing. Had a Dean ZX that I modified the exact same way as this LTD and it was fantastic, owned for years and still miss it sometimes. However, I own an LTD Super Strat from around the same era and it barely feels like you’re pressing on the strings. The frets are super small and it makes it insanely shreddy

I have put gold hardware and a pair of gold Gibson Burstbuckers in my black ~2000 LTD EX-100. It was my second guitar, bought new for ~500-550 euros in the fringe parts of Europe. I'll admit I don't play it as much any more, because I do have a small slew of Gibson Explorers which were my childhood dream guitars, but I can't bring myself to get rid of it. Partially because my father bought it for me, partially because it is such a genesis guitar in my guitar life. Still plays good, nothing to say about that. The body's just 'noticeably' smaller than the Gibsons, which is one of the reasons I like them better.

I had an epiphone explorer from the mid to late 1990s to the mid to late 2000s. It had a floating bridge with fine tuners (not a floyd though), a whammy bar and a locking nut. It was strung through the body and the ball didn't need to be clipped off. It influenced how I look at the playing position of every guitar I've looked at since. You see, where yours has the strap holder on the side near the neck, my explorer had and extra long bolt with a strap holder where the body was bolted to the neck. Having the strap back there made it sit nicely without neck dive. I need a high headstock playing position standing up and that guitar sat perfectly for me. So when you mentioned the epiphone explorer, I would have went with that if I had the choice. Edit: I used to put Ernie Ball 8s on it. It was so easy to play with those ultra light strings.

I've noticed this trend of guitar factories maturing over time. I believe Indonesia makes really great guitars at a good price point for most manufacturers out there. I remember getting an Ibanez RG470 in 1999 and the made in Korea badge on it made it less desirable, but I haven't played too many lower mid tier guitars that compared with it at the time and was absolutely blown away with it. Even nowadays with a Yamaha revstar RS320, the budget bottom of the barrel guitar, also made in Indonesia, that guitar was very superior to many guitars at it's price point. You can say the same about some of the guitars coming out of China right now, as I think a lot of factories there have been putting out guitars for a long while now and dealing with QC issues that they are starting to make really decent guitars for the money.

I have had terrible guitars from Japan and Korea, but also some really good ones. The guitar I play now is a gretsch bass vi that I bought used after playing it for 10 minutes or so at a shop. Felt amazing and sounded great. Took it home and saw "made in china" on the back of the headstock and was actually shocked. I think what really matters is if or how hungover the guys at the factory were lol. Also setup is very important.

I bought a super low end LTD for $65 at a thrift store . It was missing a saddle on the standard stratocaster style tremelo. I went ahead and put an afterarket Floyd rose on it and it became my go to guitar ! One of the nicest most comfortable necks of any guitar I've ever owned ! The only guitar I've ever owned that played better was an original custom ordered Jackson super strat I bought when I was 17 after working and saving for 6 months ! It was around $1250 if my memory is correct and It played with action so low without buzzing it often seemed to just play whatever your thinking ! Back to the LTD .......I still have it and I'm putting a vintage Seymour Duncan 59' wound by Marcella Jaurez in it tomorrow evening ! It's a beater for sure ........but I'll take it into any music store and put it up against any guitar there under a grand .......and wouldn't trade it ! It was built in the 1990's I believe .

What many don't know is that a certain factory in S Korea was making Epiphones and Squiers in the 80's and 90's which were better than the MIJ and MIA Fenders at the time. Rumor has it that it relied on Fender Japan's overstock for wood and hardware but all I know is the two Basses I have are indeed better than almost any Fenders. Entry Level was not such a bad thing. This LTD was low end for its simple construction, finish, and basic hardware more than because of Korean stigma. The MIK Squiers had three tiers, a black label made of plywood, a proper alder and maple Silver label, and a high appointments Gold label. I have two Silver Labels, a J and a P bass. Both are identical in the woods, the construction quality, the action, and the hardware, including Schaller Licensed tuners which hold tune forever. Pickups sounded great but had unruly outputs. Bridges were the same bent steel garbage Fender still uses.

The only problem I had was the fretless fingerboard needed a little sanding down as it had some buzz but that can happen on a fretless made anywhere. Especially when you live in a dry place like Colorado. Oh and the jack on the rhoades needed to be tightened down. But all of these had far fewer issues than my usa les paul special, which is why it's currently for sale.

I remember I bought a M-50 LTD ESP back in 2000. I got it cause it had ESP on it and it reminded me of George Lynch so I got it. I played that thing for like 15 years. I still see it here and there from the guy I sold it to. The M-50 now.... totally different

I've seen Jacksons that have been Made in India before, but never BC Rich. Very interesting! I think it's gonna be Indonesia next. Ive liked most of the Indonesian guitars I've owned and one of my favorites is a Bronze Series Warlock I got for $20. I'll still prefer guitars Made in Japan because they're just a cut above the rest. I play my 94 MIJ Jackson JDR-94 more than my 2000 Gibson V or 68 SG

When it comes to Made in Korea guitars, I think 2006 was its pinnacle. That's right before the time when manufacturers started to send production for mid-range guitars to China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Guitars with amazing quality could be bought new for $500 or less. I bought a used 2006 LTD MH400NT for 300 USD and it was by far the biggest bang for the buck I have ever purchased. 2006 was also the year when production line LTDs and Schecters came with a TonePros bridge, Earvana nut, Grover tuners, and name-brand pickups for the $600 range. Also, regarding Indian-made guitars, I've seen one Jackson (JS series from years ago) and one Ibanez (early Xiphos from around 2007). The Xiphos I saw had probably the worst binding job I had ever seen in the guitar. They probably got better over the years though.

I'd say like 2006-2010 roughly was that sweet spot, if you got something from Korea it was fucking great. I got an Agile PS-1000 from the same factory, and it was a PRS SE for 350 bucks, it just said Agile on the headstock. All the hardware and pickups were identical. It even had birds on the fretboard. They later caught a lawsuit and had to discontinue the series, but I consider finding another one of those to be my personal "holy grail" guitar. Edit: I didn't even realize in the video around 5:30 he mentions how PRS SE used to be made in Korea at World Music, which is where Agile was made out of, so yes, at one point you could get a PRS SE for 350 with a different logo on the headstock LOL

My Ibanez RG is from 2006, it is a neck through model and I bought it for 400€ brand new…I did upgrade the pickups cause I never liked those Infinity ones, but overall it is a great guitar, so many people who had 3000$ guitars told me that they would buy it from me in an instant if I decided to sell it…which of course I never did! Sadly the days of such cheap guitars are gone, except for maybe Harley Bentons.

I am 99% certain, and I'll have to check when I'm back home for Christmas coming up, but I'm *pretty damn sure* that the first guitar I ever bought myself was a similar model from around the same year but black with a metal truck bed style pick guard :D ....I also bought it because I wanted a pointy, James Hetfield style guitar XD

Yep, and 20yrs from now the stuff Epiphone is building in China recently will be considered great buys used. The way the market is moving, many sub $600 dollar imports should be around for a long while. Gibson and Fender are trying to catch up in the mid priced segment. Squire is building in Indonesia now and Epiphone has done more in the last few years than any other brand I've seen.

Whats funny is about 15 years ago I found a Hondo King V clone. I paid 75$ anf brought it home . The pick ups didn't work and my budy said hey lets put those dimebag Zebra Duncuns on it. I laughed but we did. With the Khaler knock off and the those pickups the damn thing played better than any guitar I had at the time. You be amazed how cheap something can be and be good.

I've got 4 all Korean guitars and 1 Hybrid, where some parts came from Korea and where sent to Japan (Fujigen) for the final construction, and a Fender Bouzouki. I've got no problem with Korean guitars/bouzoukis in fact they're great instruments. The Koreans have a very similar work ethic as the Japanese so build quality is practically the same, as near perfection as they can get to avoid dishonoring their trade and themselves.

Chinese made guitars are an interesting case. It's definitely seen as a crappy place for guitar making but they put out good stuff at various price levels. From £150 Squiers to the current Ibanez FRM at £1k. I have a Squier Affinity Telecaster Deluxe made in China and it's a fantastic player and I got it new for £180. It's currently my favourite guitar and in terms of quality it beats several Indonesian Ibanez guitars I own that cost twice as much.

I managed to snag a Kramer Pacer from the early 2010's. Thing is a heavy slab of mahogany mad and guy upgraded the bridhe to a Schaller. Slapped an EMG I'm there but I may swap that for something else.
