B-Stock Guitars- Are They Worth It?

Музыка

B stock Guitars are an interesting topic. Are they worth looking at for the lower price or are they just not good at all?
This is my Yamaha Pacifica 311-h. It was just €99 and I think it's pretty good!

My wife and I sometimes cruse through pawn shops for fun. One day I see this Strat on the wall that just connects to me. Mexican made, Bridge P/U replaced with some kind of DiMarzio rails, middle and neck replace with... something. Compensated locking Fender tuner on is as well. The neck was straight and it played well. I couldn't stop telling my wife how cool it was. $180 US. I was not looking to get a new guitar, so I didn't. About a week later I go back to the shop, and not surprisingly it's gone. My wife and kids presented it to me for Fathers Day. It's now my favorite guitar.

@@nucleargrizzly1776 I've been playing a Gibson SG baritone for some time. It used to be white in the beginning but is heavily yellowed now only after a few years later. The finish came off the neck due to an air bubble under the lacquer revealing the wood and It basically looks like a 30 year old well played instrument despite the fact that I only used it for 4 years and only played some dozens shows with it. I like the very aged look of it though. It was worth the 800 bucks I got it for but considering the fact that they now sell on Reverb for 2500 plus it's nothing but ridiculous.

99 eu instead of 500? That's an *insane* deal. Normally I don't even look at b-stocks as the discounts are normally only in the 10-15% range and frankly, to me, it's worth the extra few bucks to have a guitar that's "perfect". But at THAT discount, Hell ya, I'd buy that and happily live with the imperfections. You got yourself a wicked guitar at a wicked deal. Grats

That's the trick. There are B stocks with minor cosmetic flaws, and some that are a bit of concern on playability. I wouldn't touch the latter, but cosmetic brings up 'how bad, how much price knocked off'. I've seen Guitar Center offer maybe 5% off for major damage, which would make sale price worse down the road if you do sell. Not nearly enough. But for 30-50% off, I'm gonna have to take a hard look at it.

In Canada it's usually 10-20%, and it's almost always a very minor flaw in the finish. Unless you plan on hanging a regular production guitar on the wall for display, it's generally worth it.

THat dark spot on the neck is probably a small pitch pocket inclusion. The weird grain strip was probably scar tissue in the live tree. Like the tree took some damage in the trunk and it caused that grain to grow funny for a time. The pitch pocket near it seems to indicate that there was some splitting nearby as well. Whatever it is, with the truss rod and fretboard glued on, they are unlikely to cause any structural problems.

It was a Yamaha ERG-121 Just bought my 5 year old step daughter her own pink & white "Bull Fighter" telecaster copy with flowers on it from Amazon for like $140 & I'm building her a fluorescent neon Pink crackle Strat for her. only met my dad 1 time, EVER in My life when I was 2 on my birthday & all he got me was a visceral Infernal Hatred. As a former retailer of a few big boutique brands, I can also add that “B-Stock” and “Demo” guitars are another term for dropping a perfectly good guitar below “MAP” pricing, typically on instruments that have been sitting for over a year. Hence you’re getting a brand new instrument for a steal so dealers can legally move old stock.

One of the older guitars I own is a black ESP LTD EC-331 that I bought as a B-stock years ago. At the time, I believe the EC-331 was already on it's way out and the store was just clearing inventory. Brand new that guitar went for I think €550,- at the time, I got it for just €240,-. The only issues I could spot on the thing were 1 small imperfection in the binding on the neck, near the first fret, and the fact that 1 of the knobs was a different colour than the other 2 (black metallic instead of nickel). Other than that, the damn thing was mint. Still one of the greatest finds I've ever had.

I have that guitar's older cousin, the 611HFM. Mine was b-stock too, just a missing set screw in the tone knob that I easily replaced. There might be some other flaw(s), but I haven't seen them and the guitar plays great. I have 4 other b-stock guitars/basses and the worst of them was a demo with some minor scratches on it and a small crack in the neck pocket. I've come to love shopping for b-stocks, although buying them does limit your choice of color/finish.

This winter i got a b-stock prs se mccarty from thomann. I got it at 600 euros when the new model would cost me 1100. The specific model that i bought is the famous blue single cut 594 that made the round of youtube reviewers which is painted only on the front. When i received it i did a thorough inspection. I found some tool marks on the 12th fret (which are not noticeable), two small wood spots (maybe tool marks) on the back under the poly finish and the fact that the 3piece neck instead of one color tone is made from 3, the center being the most brown of the three. I think for buying half price this is ridiculous value. This could really be an A stock guitar.

Some wood glue and a few clamps will fix those body cracks. If it still has a crack after gluing and clamping you can use some resin to fill the gap. If you want to fix the finish you can do a touch up with the appropriate paint.

One day, I went to a music store with a friend. He was buying a Kubiki Factor bass that day. I saw a bunch of Warwick basses in a discount bin. They were listed as “งอหงิก“ (literally “bent, out of shape”). I talked with the store owner and she said those have with twisted neck. The price was like 1/10 of the good brand new one. Apparently Warwick at that time was having a QC problems and shipped guitar/bass with twisted neck on them. Of course I left those basses in the discount bin.

I have one of those (not b stock) that I got for about 300 bucks new around the same time and I thought that was pretty good, but you sir, did well. It’s a nice guitar, but I find the chrome on the hardware wears faster than on some of my other guitars. It did come with a slight finish flaw in the neck pocket, but nobody will ever see it so it doesn’t matter. As far as the tuners go, just back them off until you can pull the string out, then run the new string in and tighten. I haven’t had any problems with them really. I did put a SD phat cat in the bridge so I could have two p90s, it’s been a good change for the music I play overall.

One of our local guitar stores sometime has B-Stock guitars of a few brands, one being Fender. And Fender are the most pedantic company when it comes to the definition of what a B-Stock guitar is, at least from the experience that I had with a particular purchase I made through them in 2021. Anyway, I have a B-Stock Fender Duo-Sonic HH. It's a 2021 MIM in Ice Blue Metallic. The only issue that I was told that made it a B-Stock Guitar were two ever so slight, even in sunlight, blemishes under the clear coat just over a tiny bit of the letter F in the "Fender" logo, it was so small that it obscured less than 0.5mm of the ink of the letter F at the top of the letter. Plus a similar blemish about 1mm away from the first, also near invisible because there was no ink behind it. Another version of this guitar was selling right next to it, same colour as well, but it was not a B-stock. I studied the hell out of both just in case a member of staff had accidentally confused the two and put the wrong labels on them, but couldn't find any difference. I then got a random member of staff to do the same, he couldn't find what it was that Fender had seen, or known about, that would've had it deemed "B-Stock". I only found out about the slight blemishes when the customer rep went and got it's logistical data sheet which told the store about the reason for B-Stocking it. The store wanted for the $1079 for the Standard issue about £545. I instead bought the B-Stock for $849 about £425. 3 years later Fender now want $1,349.00. about £675. The guitar plays great and looks perfect so I couldn't be happier with it, especially for the price.

depends, I have a B-stock G&L Tribute ASATII and its great, from what I can tell the nut was the problem and it was fixed. However I think the repair on the Nut could be better, as I don't think they fully chiselled out the old nut, although I must say the quality of the gluing is very high the join is perfect. The only problem I have is the nut is a little high near the thickest strings. You can compensate with playing and I am quite used to it now. I notice when I change guitars, but then I am used to those too, and it takes little time to lock in how each one feels despite the large difference in set up and feel of each. Back to the G&L, tone wise, the Tribute series is first class. On many of the models they use the US pick ups, I think the switched might even be the same as the US guitars. Just far less finish options, no contour and its made in Indonesia. No sh*t, I have A/B'd it against a 90's Fender US Standard Tele, and 2010's US Custom Shop 52 Tele (the butterscotch with back pick guard model). Against the 90's Fender, it absolutely smashed it, and is actually a better sounding guitar, by some way. Against the Custom shop (which is about 3-4 K of guitar) they were about on the same level, just slightly different tones. Playability the 90's is a fraction better ,but only a fraction and this would change with a new nut on the G&L.. The Custom shop was in a different stratosphere to both in terms of feel, finish and build quality, that thing is a work of art. But Tone wise, my £350 Bstock Tribute G&L, smokes the 90's Tele (about £800-1000 at time of purchase) and matches a £3000 to £4000 . B-stock guitars can be great, if the base model is a good guitar, and the damage/issue is not a factor (i.e. fixed/non intrusive) you can get a great guitar...for even less

I have a Gibson mod collection. It would have been b stock for mineral streeks in the neck and a pin hole in the headstock veneer. I don't know if it got more attention when they modded it what, but it is the best playing modern Gibson I have gotten my hands on. And a maple neck with figuring and mineral rich grain looks way cooler.

Pacificas are great. Interesting tid bit for those here in the states, Yamaha doesn't market the Pacifica here very much because there is already a guitar here that looks an awful lot like a Pacifica that is hard to compete with. For the models that make it to the states, they are usually in the Made in Mexico Fender Strat price range. For a long time, I worked in the music retail industry and some time in the early or mid 2010s, Yamaha flew a handful of guitar specialists from music shops across the US and Canada to LA where they picked our brains for a few days about what they could do with the Pacifica line to help it gain more traction here in the states. The result of that was the modern day Pacifica. We told Yamaha that they weren't going to compete with Fender in the (at that time) $500 to $700 price range that the MexiStrat dominated in the US market, BUT there are many modifications that are often done to MexiStrats to improve them, or to make them more specialized. With that in mind, Yamaha revamped the Pacifica line with the idea that it's a "pre modded" Strat. That's why the guitar in this video is has that Humbucker/P-90 combo you like so much. They also offered locking tuners, I believe they had Wilkinson trems on them, and a handful of other really simple but very effective mods/upgrades to the MexiStrat. Little side note to that, you mentioned that the upgraded model, the 600 series had Seymour Duncan pickups. Little secret, the pickups in the 300 series are (IMO) better than the 600 series. Those are Yamama made pickups, they are less expensive for Yamaha to make and they don't have the name recognition like Duncan, so Yamaha charges less for them. But this is one of those situations where less expensive doesn't equal lower quality. In fact, they are better made pickups than the Duncan Design that you'd probably find in the 600 series at the time. And yup, that's legit rosewood. In that specific guitar's case, odds are it was shipped to the store you purchased it from as an A stock, but due to any number of factors the finish split. Instead of spending the money to ship it back to Yamaha and get a replacement, Yamaha probably gave the music store a credit on their next purchase for the price difference. Typically, a physical store won't order B stock items unless they are taken from a some sort of an event like a trade show or something. Just a fun story, sorry to be so off topic, but Yamaha guitars are wonderful instruments and people here in the states that are looking for a tremendous value should check them out. On the topic of the video, B-Stock is a great way to get "player" guitars. I bought my first and only Gibson from the Musician's Friend "scratch n dent" (B-stock) page back in 02. I picked up a Gibson Gothic SG for like $600. At that time I think they were going for around $800 or $900 new. It arrived and it was in, as far as I could tell, perfect condition. I noticed the "blemish" when I was installing strap locks. The original strap button had been screwed down too tight, and ended up sinking into the wood about a millimeter. Made no difference to me, the strap lock I installed was larger than the dent.

I bought a 2019 BC Rich Mockingbird Legacy Series in 2020 as a B-Stock from an Online Music Store. I had only 5 or 6 "bad quality" pictures of the actual guitar before buying it. It was one of the best decision I made! The guitar is brand new, with ZERO issue or defect !! This model cost 1500€, and I got it only for 820€ !!! Half the price !! (and I bought a B-Stock Gator Extreme Case for 90€ instead of 130€ for it !!)

You can find some great deals on B stock. Especially with Fender. During Covid, shops here were full of b-stock Fenders for 20% off. I got a Tele deluxe for half price because the pickups were out of phase, and it had a screw missing from the pickguard. Usually its just a minor blemish, though.

The cracks are also aesthetically pleasing - they could almost be part of the design. I really like the guitar. In fact, I love it. I would have just coloured the P-90 myself, simply because I do not like how they look, and think colour might fix that for me.

I bought a Joyo Jackman II "B stock" head about a year ago from Thomann. When it arrived I couldn't, and still can't determine any flaws visually or sonically - it looks and sounds exactly like the legacy Jackman I I'd bought previously and use extensively when gigging. The 2 amps sound identical when practising, jamming or gigging - I still don't know why my Jackman II was 30 quid cheaper than a new one. YMMV.

B stock items (in general) can be a great way of saving money if you are either not bothered by some aesthetic faults or have the time, willingness and skills to fix said faults. As long as the item (such as this guitar) does its main job and you are happy with it, it's all good. In guitars they can also be a great start for a modding project.
