hello! New subscriber here. I enjoyed this episode and hearing about your plans for mindful acquisition of yarn this year. I use some of the same strategies. I keep a yearly log of the meterage/yardage purchased. I also log the amount of yarn I use in completed projects each year. I try not to buy more yarn in a calendar year than I knit the previous year. This has helped me to maintain my yarn stash at a comfortable level for me.

As someone who has done low and no buys before, my best advice is write down hard rules and commit yourself to them. Think of every possible "what if" situation and decide now what you are and are not allowed to do. Also, if you don't think of it and make an exception now, the answer is no. If it's not air tight, it's so much harder to stick to. You can totally do it though! I love no buys personally because they make life simple, but you'll do amazing on this low buy I'm sure of it!

Emma, thank you so much for this video. I just picked up knitting again at the beginning of 2023, and I have spent so much money on yarn this year. I could easily spend the next year just working from my stash and not need to buy anything new. I sincerely appreciate you sharing the rules you've identified for yourself, and I wish you a gentle and disciplined low buy 2024!

I have added guidelines for my yarn buying for about six months. Having a project for a given yarn specifically really helps.

Love your bookshelf :) I'm also trying to get my stash under control. And I don't knit that fast... Loved your video ! I have decided to do 200g out for 100g in and have a fixed weight amount under which I want to be by the end of the year.

I hope you get more subscribers soon! I will try for low buy next year and only buy more if I run out of yarn mid of a project but I watched DoSo Knits videos on Ravelry and i was able to search for specific project to fit the amount of yarn I have. Like you I have brought to odd skein or cake of yarn with no specific pattern in mind just because if was pretty. I was inspired by DoSo Knits to really make the most of my queue by adding more projects with the yarn from stash I plan to use with each project. Having added all the information in my queue I feel less likely to shop recklessly as I have a plan in place.

I am not doing low buy per say but for 2023 I've been keeping track of how much yarn I've used/sold/donated and how much I've bought and I was supposed to use more yarn than I bought, but I slipped when my best friend announced he pregnancy and I didn't have any baby yarns so for 6 months I didn't buy any yarns and then the dam burst when I was supposed to only get baby yarns for specific projects, then I wanted to knit socks and didn't have any sock yarn and there was a SUPER good deal on cashmere yarn and so on, so instead of ending the yarn with less yarn I think I'm going to end with more, since I'm currently +1,1KG of yarn. But oh well I'm going to try again in 2024.

Hahah I feel like there is always something unexpecting that comes up, "making" us buy more yarn. Hopefully your baby knits went great, your socks are fitting perfectly and the cashmere is as lovely as the deal was ❤️ Here's for a "better" 2024!

This was a great video!! I'm on a low buy for 2023 and implementing almost all of your plans/rules/tips, it's incredible how much more manageable my stash has become since I started doing this! I'm sure you'll do great with your own low buy project 💖

Grappig om te horen dat de Breidagen etc jouw zwakke plek zijn - ik kom daar eigenlijk alleen voor de workshops, de marktplaats is zo druk dat ik hoogstens een sokkenwol of zo mee kan pakken! Ik wil ook low buy gaan dit jaar, eigenlijk om precies dezelfde reden: als je "helemaal niets" zegt bereid je alleen een faalervaring voor :) Ik heb nog voor een paar truien aan wol liggen en die wil ik eerst op z'n minst op de naalden hebben. Maar ik heb ook een hele stapel cadeaukaarten voor Trollenwol gekregen... dat telt niet vind ik ;)

This sounds way better then what I had tried before😂 I did a no buy-year ones, not because of the amount of yarn, but because of the amount of projects and no money. But in the end I just didn't knit that much as I wasn't at all inspired. So I gave in during the summer and bought some for a knitted dress. Finished it and got back into my knitting mojo, trying to finish more WIP's without buying. Ofcourse I didn't knit that much and in the end got so frustrated😔 so Christmas came, bought some yarn to make me happier, and as I did I told myself to be allowed to buy yarn to chear myself up. It really did and I did knit a lott more. Just put a budget on the limit per month, just so I can save some money and enought high budget to chear myself up sometimes. It does help, but also my project-list keeps growing 😂 So maybe, when I feel overwelmed too (not yet) I'm going to apply some of your strategies❤

As someone who also lives in the hague; do you know any brick and mortar stores or do you have any recommendations? I also shouldn't buy any yarn the coming year but yeah.. 🙃

Hi there! I'm not too familiar with the term "brick and mortar store", but a quick google let em to believe it's a retail/local yarn store. If not, please correct me! If it does mean that, there are two yarn stores in the city: Cross and Woods and Steekje Meer! Cross and woods identifies as a parlor (meaning they don't sell the "big brands" such as Scheepjes or Katia) and also sells fabrics and cross stitching stuff. Steekje Meer! sells (mostly) the brand Katia. They closed down for a bit around New Year's and I didn't know they reopened, but their website and Google seem to indicate they reopened. But I'm not too sure about that! Hope this helped! ❤️
