I am a personal finance nerd. I want you to really work on change of mind set. You are not restricting a damn thing. You are starting to honor where you are, what you have and to do this, you read that book that you bought that you never got to, you write in the journal that you have in the bottom shelf. Instead of going out, play a game, work on a puzzle, etc. You learn how to cook real food, Start with what is in your fridge. Learn how to make a pot of black beans amazing 25 different ways. Start to meditate, and go for daily outside walks. You got this. Your goals are important, and DOABLE.

thank you for this!! the positive spin is really important and i'll definitely reframe it this way when my head gets jumbled up between restriction and non-restriction. i want to live a life where restriction isn't even a word i think about frequently, never mind as the dichotomy i'm using to define my lifestyle, so thank you!! 🩷

Thanks for being vulnerable. Don't think of a no buy as restrictive, think of it as providing yourself financial freedom for your future. You got this!

I can relate! My two coping mechanisms are also food and shopping. When I went on Weight Watchers years ago to lose weight (I did end up successfully losing over 100 pounds) I needed something to distract me from food. I found that if I just hung out at home I would eat out of boredom, so I would go out and wander around stores. I developed a bit of a shopping addiction. Since Covid I have lost my 17 plus year job due to my boss retiring, gone through a few hellish new work environments and gone through menopause. I have gained back some of the weight, so now I, too, am trying to deal with a no/low buy and my food issues at the same time, so I am trying to find other coping mechanisms.

thank you so so much for sharing, i'm both glad and sorry to hear you're in the same boat haha. the eating and the spending seem thick as thieves and it has felt impossible to work on one without triggering the other!! i'm sorry it's been rough since covid but congrats on prioritizing your well being. i hope we're both able to find some better coping mechanisms to lean on this year!! ❤️❤️❤️

As someone that uses both food and spending to feel some measure of control in my life when I'm feeling out of control I completely understand those two habits being linked and causing us harm.

You described my life for the past year to a tee, the compulsive spending and taking out a personal loan to hopefully consolidate it. Ugh. I’m a Taurus too, its rough out here for us 😂

  • @Tiffany-lo6hc

You can do this! I'm not a compulsive shopper but I have experienced a lot of lifestyle creep over the past few years. I have $37,000 in debt (car, student loans, and 0% interest credit card). So I'll be doing no buy as well! PS - I'm an organizer on the side. I specialize in ADHD, depression, and level 1-2 hoarding disorders. My core belief is that the brain is MAGICAL. We can recognize and tackle maladaptive coping mechanisms, which is great. But the coping mechanism itself exists/existed to protect you from trauma, which personal losses definitely are. If the worst thing someone does to themselves is spend money in order to keep facing the world, good for them. Now you're able to recognize that and start moving past it, and you're strong enough to make it. Good job, you.

This is such a wonderful and kind way to look at it, thank you 🥹 It is definitely hard to remember that coping mechanisms are formed trying to protect us from something else! This is such a great way to reframe it and I will be holding it with me in the back of my head. Lots of love and luck to you on your no buy year as well!! ❤❤❤

Totally understand your struggle with both binge eating and debt. I’m right there with u. Had miscarriages in April 2020 and 2021 the Day after Xmas so 2022 binge spending both my husband and I. Our credit cards were supposed to be paid off in 2023 and it’s now 2024…so disheartening knowing that the credit cards could’ve been over with. So our plan this year every month after pay day whatever we have left in checking before getting paid will be dumped onto the credit cards with whatever we’re already putting on the credit cards to get them paid off a hair faster. Good luck on both of ur journeys. Totally rooting for u. You will succeed.

I think we have really similar thoughts on how we are doing this year! Just commenting because of the restriction mentality talk: I'm also on the Grace Nevitt no buy train! But you know restrictive mindsets aren't good for me either, and the way I have approached this year is I have set myself a very small budget (UK £250) for "non essentials" for the year. Groceries and like-for-like replacements of empties of things I use regularly like skin care are not part of my budget, but things that I may want (or feel that I need) to buy all come out of that budget including a couple of clothing items I had already listed out that I know I am going to need this year. Basically what this means is I feel like I have the choice, I am not "not allowed" to buy some item, but I end up weighing up what I actually value most and I end up buying cheaper (thrifted) than I would have done last year. And for the clothing I intend to buy (eg need a wedding guest outfit) I can wait for thrifted options to come up at a good price and I feel good about doing that with my budget approach. It's similar to your grocery budget concept - I do feel like it is much more empowering to decide how you are spending your money (eg) this item or that versus saying not allowed to buy anything. I'm a few weeks in and already seeing impact on my finances and also already not feeling the same cravings to purchase new stuff but actually finding myself enjoying the abundance of the non-essential budget which is largely unspent.

Hahaha this one is really resonating with the Tauruses!!! Yes, definitely going through and assessing whether or not something is actually serving you is sooo helpful when I clean out clutter. I'm going to try and approach shopping the same way by figuring out if its just a dopamine hit or do I actually love the purchase! Thanks so much for your kind comment ❤❤❤

Door Dash is evil 👿. For Christmas I bought a really high end air fryer on Facebook Marketplace ($60 compared to $250). My daughter’s $24 to Door Dash chicken wings cost $10 to make (I genuinely don’t know how chicken wings got so expensive). I’ve already made my money back. But I’ve also turned her on to cheaper meal options like drumsticks with chicken wing sauce served with a fully loaded baked potato. Add a salad. That’s a $6 dinner. Now I’m saving $18 twice a week.

totally understand where you're coming from! my plan is really focused on where i overspend unnecessarily, which is typically clothes, books, and smaller things that add up to huge amounts when i'm not paying attention. with furniture, i'm pretty good about saving for larger purchases and the furniture pieces definitely aren't anything i'm trying to buy during this period, so i figured i'd give myself the option to thrift them if i found them out in the wild for a good price! the only thing i really want new is the chair for my office, and that more-so is if i see it on sale during this time bc i haven't seen it on sale yet. so i'm not going out hunting for these things, but if they land in my lap, i wanted to have a plan in place!
