It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. I think both is important. It takes guys like Matt pushing the boundaries with higher budget builds to trickle down into the more affordable stuff. How many technologies have come from space exploration or race cars that are now standard in our everyday lives.

This man is single-handedly repairing the collective reputation of spec home contractors in the US, which they have done a good job of demolishing during the last 30 years by throwing up cheap, shoddy residential structures all over the country.

Certainly working hard to bridge the gap. It amazes me that more builders are doing this. I've owned 6 houses in the last thirty years, with every one of them they got a little bigger and nicer, unfortunately none of them were built with hi performance in mind. Builders need to stop looking at customers as a one time customer. If you build houses the way they should be, then you would get repeat customers. (i seem to remember reading that the average home owner keeps their house 6 years)

I'm trying the same but it's tough. I moved back to where I grew up and decided to do spec only entry level homes. It's been 20 years since I worked on any entry level homes and I forgot the ego issue. A lot of "are telling me I don't know how to do my job?" and " I've been doing it this way for 9- 13- 22" years ect..... My response is usually "I'm just telling you to do it like the plans are drawn".

Scott is my new favorite builder on The Build Show. FINALLY someone that's doing high performance projects in a creative way so the masses can afford them! I love it.

Hopefully Scott’s home buyers will start spreading the word to their friends and they’ll tell more friends, to spread the word … education is key! I love the longer format! You know, a few hours ago, I would have agreed. Now, not so much. Someone has convinced a good chunk of the American people that they somehow deserve stuff they aren’t willing to do the work to earn. And, on top of that, they now think it’s just fine to take it from others who did earn it. I guess it started with the income tax, and a century of Marxists in education later, twenty something kids think they should be able to own houses that cost over $250,000 while working as clerks and waiters. Well, there’s no free lunch, so when someone sells them a PoS tract home you can put your fist through, I no longer care about their pain. Just don’t.

I’m a medical writer with degrees in biology and health sciences. I’ve spent my career doing medical research. I stumbled on this video because of some strange algorithm - and I’m just lucky. Normally, I’m trying to help cure cancer. I do not have the time, the patience, or the background to investigate and determine whether a home builder is doing a sound job or slapping together a piece of crap. Most people don’t. That’s why it’s important to have regulations, permitting requirements, and licensed inspections. That way, I can be an expert in my field and do my part, following the myriad regulations, to make sure the medicines you take some day will help your health and not kill you, and I should be sure that when I buy a newly built home, it’s not going to crumble in just a few years. It’s like a social contract. Whether people like the word “regulation” or not, we need them for a well- functioning society.

I'd love to see more of Scott on the channel. The combination and contrast of what you can do at the top end (with Matt), and what you can do super well on a more modest budget (Scott).

I'd love to watch as many videos as Scott is willing to put out. Proper techniques but budget-friendly- the perfect niche! Hoping he starts his own channel and documents all of the things he's doing for us to watch! I don't care about it being a well-edited video. Just getting it out to us with nominal editing would be great.

I have always wanted something like that for the comfort level, but not at that kind of pricing. Maybe if I was a multimillionaire which apparently must be most of Matt's clients now. Scott brings quality to the masses hopefully at a great cost point.

I like the long format. Details are being covered better and we can see the excitement with this builder in doing the job right. He is definitely building a good name for himself and his work.

This was one of the better videos. All your years of experimenting and striving for higher performance is pushing people like this gentleman here to reach higher as well. This is the ultimate goal!

Long format is great. The editing keeps every minute meaningful. This builder is a hero, by the way. Building smarter doesn't necessarily mean spending twice as much on the house. All the good ideas on your channel are free, too, so it's nice to see other builders learning from your videos.

Favorite video ever. My vote is to add Scott to the Build Show.

Oh my gosh Matt! I can watch this conversation and tour for hours. It looks like Scott’s mind is full of build ideas.

I just want to echo what everyone else has said: This is such a great video! It's crazy intimidating to see all of the other super high end custom builds without much concern for budget. This one is much more encouraging.

This builder appears to be very proud of what he is doing with his home builds. He loves sharing it with you who he obviously respects. Thanks again for this type of show.

I would love to see more of Scott's work highlighted - I think his approach needs to be adopted all over because 90% of homebuyers can't afford the Risingers and Bazcecs. He's filling a huge void in the market between that top tier and the bottom feeding tract builders using Tyvek and a prayer to seal the houses.

The video (and audio) was well done. For the most part, the information was delivered in an easy-to-follow fashion. I am, however, a little unclear as to what type of spray foam will be used. At one point, Matt alluded to the use of low density foam, but it was not specifically confirmed by Scott. Also, I was a bit disappointed that no details were revealed regarding the roof deck other than the underside was to be spray foamed. I am curious as to whether any additional foam board insulation will be used above the roof deck. For all builders... investigate the book "Pretty Good House" - a guide to creating better homes. Pretty Good House provides a framework and set of guidelines for building or renovating a high-performance home that focus both on its inhabitants and the environment-but keeps in mind that few people have pockets deep enough to achieve a “perfect” solution. You asked for comments on the longer format. Yes, I like it a lot! I've lived in a "cardboard house" by a production builder for the past 30 years. I'm looking ahead to building a retirement home in the next couple years, and I want to incorporate as many of these features into it as possible. I can't afford the kind of custom home you build, so what you presented here as a more affordable way to achieve a high efficiency structure will be very helpful. You and Scott ought to collaborate on a book for the average homeowner, about how to build a home like this one. I wish you had one now, so i could save some of the time I expect to spend viewing all your videos to glean as many details as possible.

I think it's safe to say we are all smitten with Scott! An ethical builder who is price conscious, focusing on people who can only afford a more realistic budget. Thank you both for making this video!

I love this guy's philosophy. Everything you need and nothing you don't. This is building science for the everyperson, not just the rich. Let's see more of this!

You make a good point! I always look at ROI with regard to Time Value of Money. Wife & I are in the planning phase of our "Forever Home," and we can afford top end build features. We've built & renovated a few homes over the past 18yrs. While I'd love to go hog wild on this final build, a lot of things don't make sense to do so when I run the numbers on payback duration. So, we pull in the reigns and choose "Smart" instead of "Best" (and favor a build like Scott's example here) because I'd rather invest the cost savings between the two methods on a down payment for another rental property that will make far greater profit than top end energy saving materials will ever realize.

Man, this was the best episode in awhile. Scott is truly dedicated to his craft. You can tell the amount of time he was put in to solve around the problems he sees, with the budget he has. Hope to see him around more.

I have watched many MANY of Matt’s videos over the years and this one is ABSOLUTELY my favorite - specifically due to Scott’s true passion to building science on a budget. I am in the the process of rebuilding (not remodeling) my 1980’s home and I was truly moved by his commitment. Keep these values and I am certain you will succeed in everything you do. Best regards.

Scott seems like an honest man who isn't trying to con the customer out of money, but is proud of what he does and continuously improves, like Japanese.

Scott is doing great work. This should be the bare minimum spec for all new homes.

I would honestly love to work with Scott, as a former carpenter apprentice , you have a through approach to the work and attention to the building process plus a nice character, which for a contractor is hit or miss. Good luck in future builds and with your labor team / subs.

I actually like this long format better. Taking the time to explain why and how things are done is worth the time to watch to the end. Especially nice to learn that these upgrades can be affordable

@@1d1hamby I think you still need the occasional condensed video to bring in new viewers - a lot of people won't sit down for a 45 minute video from an unknown channel, but will for a 10 or 15 minute one - but you certainly can't fit as much info into that video, so you have to carefully weigh who you're targeting - new viewers or long time viewers. There might be a rare topic where you can be detailed *and* fit it into 10 minutes, but so many topics *need* the extra duration to be fully fleshed out - and if you don't spend the time on a really thorough video, you'll spend it watching a second or third one to fill in the gaps.

This was great -- we need more Scotts! It was fantastic to see that Scott has worked towards a build quality destination with a cost constraint and innovating to make that happen. We need more of this, and we need more videos like this to share the knowledge. Thank you for sharing!

I love builders like this. He's not doing anything crazy, but he's slowly changing the game for the common, spec house. And you can just see and hear how excited he is to talk about it and show it off. It's builders like him that will help this quality of construction to become the standard of all builds in the future.

IMO - this is one of the best videos on this channel. So good to see how to apply the building theories to more affordable homes.

I haven't been watching many of Matt's videos lately but this one caught my eye. I'm very glad I took the time to watch it all. Very informative. It is nice to know that builders like Scott are out there doing this type of work. It would be great if I knew of one in my area.

Yes I like the new longer form content. I admit I was a little worried that editing might drop off but inserting the clip of how you used the novel framing technique the next day and also provided a much better detail view gave me renewed faith. Keep them coming. I’m not a builder I’m a fascinated homeowner and D-I-Y-er, so seeing quality work on a smaller budget is helpful.

Hey Matt, I was in oil for 15 years, got laid-off 2 years ago and started remodeling to keep the bills paid, also waiting for people to start hiring again. I have always built stuff, and enjoyed building science, thats how i found your channel. Ive decided to try to get a job as a super at a builder, I would have never gone this route if it wasnt for your channel. I have applied to a few builders, hoping I get an interview and just get a start somewhere. Matt, love your work / channel. I believe it would be FANTASTIC if you’d make one video and list your best ideas for us to view with our contractors prior to the start of our build. Start ground up. Examples, sealing foundation to sheathing, how to “California corner”, proper window install, Scott’s ideas on soffit/sheathing seal, exterior penetration seal, spraying interior walls / studs for termites, basic HVAC ideas, Pex recirculating loop. Scott seems like a good man. Like, isn't this SUPPOSED to be 'the American way' ? To do things better? To elevate the state of the art? To provide as high a quality product as possible at whatever price point. This gets back to 'business ethics'. Something that, as far as I am aware, WAS/IS part of every business degree. Awesome! Thank you Matt. I really connected with Scott on what he does with his common sense to do to make a house now a step forward to be self sustaining. I started in 1977 in my studies in Architecture and became an General contractor in Oregon. I retired my partnership with my brother in law in the business in 1991. During our years in this field we were active in bringing these common approach to mostly the remodeled homes we did with the limited resources that were available. I am very happy to see the use of products that engineers and inventors have made to make houses better for living. I would just like to see the cost of materials come down. These homes in my opinion are not affordable for the average homeowner across United States. I hope to see new break through to bring cost down across materials and labor to less time to build. The more holes you have the more cost you have. When this gets fixed everyone will benefit.

Loved this video, and loved meeting Scott! He seems like such a genuine, caring builder that wants to provide the best homes possible within a smaller budget to his customers. Bravo and major kudos! We would never be able to afford the type of homes that Matt builds, but it's so wonderful to see the build quality concepts that Matt uses filtering down to lower-budget builds!

I love the long format content, my goal is to design high performance communities, so I like being able to soak up the little details that might get passed over in a short video.

We are building, for the very first time, our own custom home and I've been able to use the knowledge Matt explains in his videos to air seal our home (much more than what builders in my area are doing). I've been able to include some budget friendly high performance build components. Thank you Matt for sharing this info. I'm glad I found your channel before we started our build.

Matt & Scott, great content and don't mind the longer video. As a builder from down under, I know how much detail there is when building a high performance home. This video covered everything worth noting and more. Well down to Scott for bringing this quality into a spec home. Having built in both the spec home and custom build markets, any home owners that purchases one of Scott's homes will not pay the real value of the home, well done.

Great long format video for this type of content. Essential is that this guy is a great story teller and enthusiastic. Keep a mix of short and long in the channel.

Just having someone build a spec house with a thought process at all is rare! Most of the ones being built are jus cut corners everywhere. I’m happy that people are starting to care about work again

Loved this video. Scott's passion comes through as a young wide eyed kid learning about a trade and the enthusiasm of applying custom craft and personal touch on every aspect. I really enjoyed his pride in his business. Hopefully when I build ICF in a few years I can find a builder that has his same level of detail and enthusiasm for my New Hampshire forever home.

More like this, please. I've mostly stopped watching because so many of the builds featured here are for houses that are just excessive in almost every way.

Completely agree. Everything in this video is very realistic for most people to achieve.

Love to see homebuilders that are putting that extra quality into everyday homes. Also, as a consumer, not a builder, would love to be able to find builders that do this type of thing? Have you thought about offering something on your build network for non-homebuilders to be able to find builders that are doing these extra things? For me, I go to homebuilder locations and watch and see what they do. Most don't do some of the basic things to add efficiency, even on higher end homes.

Matt: You give Scott props by adopting his soffit idea. But why didn’t you chamfer the soffit/exterior wall edge? And or the outer edge to match the facia angle? Two passes with a circular saw and you have a much better fit, both appearance and sealing performance. Thanks for the video, lots of good support for a better built house using standard labor.

I do like these long format videos. You let the builder speak, and explain why they're doing the methods that they do. Scott must have impressed the heck out of you for you to implement his strategy into one of your builds.
