Low Back Strength?

There is no such thing a low back "STRENGTH"
A contentious statement to say the least, but its intent is not to be purposefully polarizing, its intent is to help inform us of better exercises to choose when looking to have either a direct, or indirect effect on the lumbar spine.
When we say something is "weak" we begin our crusade to add resistance in order to build strength, as we move a muscle from origin to insertion against said resistance. This thought process, when applied to the muscles of the lower back can be ineffective and potentially harmful.
And to someone in pain, ineffective and harmful, quickly become the same thing.
So rather than performing low back extensions, side plate crunches or supermans for low back strength. Focus on low back STABILITY and utilize exercises like ab wheels, Copenhagen planks and single-leg rdl's.
Then, as an adjunct, factor in the role of mobility and stability of the shoulders and hips, and how those factors will allow you to train the strength of your lats and glutes.
This multi-faceted approach to the lower back, along with a few other factors will drastically improve your pain and performance around the low back.

So does that mean there's no benefit to stuff like weighted hyperextensions? Strength, hypertrophy, or otherwise? We're just better served doing other stuff?

not necessarily... its still a primary exercise to aid in the strengthening of the posterior chain (hamstring, glutes and evidently the lower back or erector spinae) what Jordan is referring to is that the real 'strength' doesn't originate from the 'lower back/lumbar region but actually lies in the surrounding muscles (glute, lats, erectors, core) and a stable environment around those.

@@aenguswilliams5979 So he's saying that the strength of the erector spinae specifically is not as important?

@@lucentshadow no! he is saying that it´s importance lies in stabilisation rather than active movements and strengthening should be done accordingly

@@lucentshadow Strength =/= stability. Strength is a muscles ability to produce force. Whereas stability is its ability to resist outside forces. The action of most low back muscles is to produce extension, so if they are "strong" they should be able to dynamically extend the spine with great force. But, as Jordan said due to their poor leverage their function is more so "anti-flexion" or extending from a flexed position rather than extending from a neutral position. He's saying that core STABILITY is very important overall because that's generally how these muscles are going to be utilized when we are lifting. For example during a squat your core musculature stabilizes the spine in a neutral position. Fighting against gravity and/or the weight to maintain that position. So the muscles are actively working to stabilize, but due to the lack of active movement they are not displaying strength.

The erectors of the low back are inaccessible to voluntary control? Ok, man. Well, pretty sure I’m controlling them right now. Where does all this info come from? What I just bend the low back and then straighten it. That wasn’t voluntary? Also I’m not clear on how that lats and the glutes are what is responsible for low back strength.

Because these muscles are innervated through the Dorsal Root nerve which basically makes their movement Autonomic.Hence, Anti Flexion rather than extension
