Knopfler is an outstanding songwriter. He is not only an underrated lyricist, he is a literate lyricist. This song is Master Class in songwriting.

Mark on an acoustic guitar is just as sweet as his electric work. The man is a Master at his craft.

This song is actually autobiographical.Mark Knopfler (lead guitarist vocalist and songwriter of Dire Straits) had a relationship with a lesser known punk rocker named Holly Vincent. He helped her a lot with her career.(And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real) and then she dumped him. He saw her later in an interview where she said he couldn't handle the scene so she had to split (Oh Romeo yeah I used to have a scene with him) Knopfler made it very clear later he felt used by her.

"All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme"....what a fantastic line. Glad you hit this one; "Tunnel of Love" from the same album is blend of this vibe and rocking jam, so try it next!

The Guitar that Mark is playing is a National Dobro Resonator from the 1930's.

Find a streetlight, steps out of the shade Says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?" What a pickup line, this is in such wonderful stark contrast to sultans.

The guitar is a resonator guitar, an acoustic guitar with internal jiggery-pokery made of metal cones, that gives it that certain sound. The guitar body is usually made of wood, but some are 100% metal. Famous makers of resonator guitars include National and Dobro. Also called resophonic.

I think the "there's a place for us" is referencing the song Somewhere from the West Side Story movie. He says "you know the movie song". Barbara Streisand also sings a great version of it.

The drummer's name is Pick Withers and this album ("Making Movies") was his last before leaving the group. If you like his drumming, listen to the groove he lays down at the end of "Skateaway", a track from the same album. Mark Knopfler rightfully gets a lot of attention, but I think Withers was part of the reason so many of their earlier music was so good.

The "Hey la, my boyfriend's back" line is a reference to the 1963 hit song "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels. Making Movies is still my favorite Dire Straits album -- "Romeo And Juliet", "Skateaway", "Tunnel of Love", "Expresso Love" -- I've listened to it far too many times to count them all. MTV was still in the future when it dropped in 1980. We heard the songs from it on the radio and FM rock radio stations played this song quite a lot back then. We let they lyrics paint the picture as part of the flow of imagination induced by the music. The video came later. The Romeo and Juliet theme fits with the folksy ren-fair intro while letting the listener know the song is going to be about star crossed lovers of some sort of another. The song is six minutes long but so well crafted that it's easy to lose track of some of those minutes during a listening.

And some serious literary shout-outs. "You can fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold". In the play, silver and gold are juxtaposed with each other to represent good and evil.
