Love, luck, and a lark: Crash Test Dummies' Brad Roberts

Brad Roberts is the lead singer and guitarist for the Canadian folk-rock band Crash Test Dummies. In this What's Your Calling? interview, Brad talks about the luck of being in a band at the height of the music industry, the hard work necessary to endure in music in the age of file-sharing, and being in love with what he does.

Could not agree more. Having grown up with the "industry" desperately gasping its final breaths, it became painfully clear that I wasn't going to see much (if any) money for my music. You can't let it put you off of doing what you want to do or in many of our cases, what we need to do. A musicians life is not an easy one but the gratification i get from compositions and creating music is a feeling no pay check (within reason, unless you have lots of zeroes on the end of the figure) can deliver. Big fan of Crash Test. Always been a big inspiration to me. Enjoyed that interview.

File sharing didn't ruin anything. File sharing has lead to streaming, and Spotify nailed it. It was inevitable technology was going to change how music was shared. In many ways I think the last decade has given power back to the artists instead of the greedy record labels.

I always thought that musicians made a very tiny fraction off of their CD sales, which the rest went to the beauracracy of the record label which isn't really needed anymore to take off.

People are still making money off of selling music today, or at least providing it to listeners which gives them the ability to sell ads, it’s just not the artists. It’s Apple and Spotify.
