Louisville attorney sounds off on the city's handling of Scottie Scheffler case

Thomas Clay, who represents dozens of police officers, said the 12-day saga has been a terrible look for LMPD and the mayor's office.

there is a video report on YT stating that insurance will no longer cover the city for civil lawsuits, because the amount has ballooned over the last decade. I believe the LPD is under federal investigation, the cops don't/won't learn, taxpayers pay...now directly out of the budget..and the lies and corruption continue. Many cities are facing this, when budgets for services get slashed, then perhaps qualified immunity reform will get serious.

One of the most important things you can have nowadays is body camera footage with audio. The blame belongs on the police officer for not doing what he is instructed and compelled to do with respect to his body camera. I can tell you from personal experience between the police departments and fire department and all of the equipment meaning the police cars and firetrucks and sometimes road flares, there is so much confusion about what you should be doing as a motorist in a situation like that is astounding. I was able from a ridge where I lived to see flashing red and blue lights over 3 miles away. I didn't know where they were exactly until I got to that intersection and discovered that it was very close to my destination. The amount of police cars here and there at different angles, compounded by various firetrucks parked at different kinds of angles and every one of them had lights flashing headlights on and blinding intensity from those lights. A fireman was standing between two lights sources directing traffic and he was barely even visible and the firetruck was pointed directly at oncoming traffic. Sometimes they don't have enough sense to turn the lights to a parking light position. In my estimation there are so excited to be there with all of these lights going that no one actually thinks about what the outcome could be blinding motorists. When I had lunch today with three business associates we discussed this problem and to a person they confirmed what my thoughts were these guys get off on flashing lights and sirens and sometimes this kind of stuff happens. At a close by intersection to where I live there was a small housefire caused by a candle and it was extinguished by the fire department which is housed six doors away and it was extinguished within five minutes. However, 13 firetrucks showed up from different departments some of them from 15 miles away. It was a circle jerk extraordinaire.

Any issued equipment damaged or destroyed will usually be replaced by the department. There is always a uniform shop with a dept account and uniforms in stock. This won’t cost the officer a dime. Typically People who lie about an incident add minute details which adds no value to the investigation. They do this to ADD credibility to their already unbelievable story.

Don’t know who is “actually correct “ but knowing Scottie’s personality and he is a “walk the walk” kind of man, I’d bet on him before I bet on the officer! Looks to me like officer is not disclosing some info, and can’t seem to prove he was dragged! If he were charged with a crime he’d have to be proven guilty beyond innocent but here they are asking for Scottie to be proven guilty when the evidence so far is showing he was correct. Then officer is bitching ? wtf not a good look at all from someone outside of the area for sure. Good luck with that.

Because he was a screw up somewhere else and they wanted him out of that department is my guess based on his handling of this deal. No video, hasn’t shown the pants, DA ask for Scottie to show up to a hearing that most don’t have to ? DA doesn’t want to move the court date that Judge admits she lets all defendants choose when it’s convenient for court /Attys and person charged. DA said it was cScottie sheffler no one really knew him he wasn’t like a huge athlete (basically stated) then goes on to say “ we all know he’s been here for 6 days “ 🤷‍♂️😂. Plus Mr DA if it were Michael Jordan or another big Athlete, or if it were Tiger Woods who was playing in the tournament, his ass wouldn’t have gotten charged and in fact he would have gotten taken away from the scene! But Scottie went to jail and actually (did miss ) his tee time and they were able to work around, but it costs him something in this I assure you! This is craziness. It might and I mean “might “ be different if the video showed officer being dragged and his pants were on display and video showed Scottie being rude. ( which he is actually kindest guy out there) if you had caught someone else you might have gotten a different attitude for sure!

It's raining. A hundred cops cars have all their headlights and flashing lights activated, which on a dark, rainy night, is, at best, blinding. A cop told him what to do, and he tried to do what the cop told him. The detective, a second cop, was clearly interested in barking orders than facilitating the golfers entering the course driveway. Maybe you are asking more of a human being than the situation demanded. For you to ask the question reveals you are either a cop, a family member of a cop, or a personal friend of a cop or two.

@@caribbeanradiology7004 One more thing. The cops, especially that detective, think their jobs are so important and their position in the world so elevated they do not need to consider what is drives a particular citizen. The golfer was under pressure from the moment he woke that morning, getting ready for an important day again. A big day, no less. The police were surely aware golfers would be coming, and said golfers would all be under greater strain than the average person. Yet, they clearly did not take this into consideration. If they had, they would have been looking out for these guys. As mentioned earlier, they consider themselves and their job more important than the humans and the lives they promised to serve and protect. This is the problem, and it's a growing problem. If we do not solve it, we'll find ourselves under a tyrannical thumb, for tyranny does not come all at once but one goosestep at a time.

This was not a "bad look for the police dept" this was simply a revealing look as to how they normally do business and had this been a regular person he would be going to prison as all those in charge down there would be pretending that they believe the cop told the truth.

Life is full of inequities. Some people are taller than others, some by mere chance find wealth, others find trauma. Mr. Scheffler had the good fortune to have evidence that put the charges in serious doubt. Even more so he had the notoriety to encourage the public to watch the case closely. Finally, through the happenstance of genetics, his own dedication and some luck he had the wealth to vigorously fight this case.

Simple fix Gillis, turn your body cam on and we would know for sure if you were dragged. You have a history of lying and trumping up charges there at LMPD. It seems like the majority of LMPD has an issue with turning on their body worn camera. There is a reason for that and that is to hide their corruptness.

Just imagine stopping and arresting the number 1 professional golfer in the entire world driving into the golf course to play a MAJOR tournament, in a PGA courtesy car, with PLAYER credentials! The entire thing is absurd. Would Michael Jordan have been arrested trying to arrive and park at the arena for an NBA finals game?

The last 20 years seems to be an example of police agencies that have basically been given so much rope that they hung themselves with it. Now let's be honest with ourselves and the system, you cannot place a famous person in general lockup just like you can't put a cop in general population, some jails just don't have the facilities to deal with segregating inmates. If you put this famous person in general population and they get hurt then you’re liable and you’re sure to be under a microscope because of their fame. That’s why they always appear to be receiving preferential treatment, in many cases they simply have to. There are countless examples of people that were just supposed to spend the night in jail that have died while in police custody or have been injured by other inmates. If you want these people to be treated like everyone else you have to be willing to spend a lot of money on your facilities and also be prepared to lose a lot of tax money when they sue you for anything that was done wrong.

Are people serious about special treatment cus he got out fast?? The guy is in the middle of a Major tournament vying to win millions, and is literally hours away from his tee time. Once they got back to the station and realized all of that (PGA president contacted them to fill them in) and who Sheffler was, I guarantee they of course expedited it because if there was any doubt of an improper arrest, then they are looking at a major lawsuit if he was unable to continue in the tournament. Could u imagine the fallout right now if he ended up missing his start time and being disqualified? Once they were informed who he was and where he was heading in a Clearly marked pga car, they knew they messed up and got him out fast so there would be no chance of him being disqualified
