Louis Andriessen - Tapdance, percussion concerto (2013)

Composer: Louis Joseph Andriessen (June 6, 1939 - July 1, 2021)
Percussion Soloist: Dominique Vleeshouwers
Orchestra: Asko|Schönberg and Kölner Philharmonie conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw
00:00 A calm melancholy introduction
00:59 ...briefly interrupted by rude brass
02:07 A big band dance begins (Señor Blues)
02:58 Solo taptable enters as the dance picks up into a Charleston (3:20)
05:27 A highly syncopated bassline drives a dissonant melody
06:34 The dance dies down into a quiet meditative section (7:18) Solo marimba enters
09:40 The orchestra joins the solo marimba in a savage, almost-mocking imitation
10:33 The orchestra melts away into a dirge, solo timpani over drawn-out dissonances
13:23 Señor Blues returns in epic form before falling away into the dirge again

I love when Andriessen leaves big weird empty spaces in the middle of the more intimate small moments. Also the more energetic sections are giving "the tap dancer's legs aren't the same length" and it's very fun.

when it says "tap table", what instrument does it mean by that? just a bit confused by that

It seems left open to the percussionist, just something to imitate tap dance sounds. One of the performance reviews says "tap sounds with sticks and thimbles on a wooden plank".

@@Cmaj7indeed, I was also wondering if this involved a dancer or not? Or is tapdance basically someone miming on percussive sounds? I believe btw, that Michael Torke has also a 'tapdance' concerto, not sure how this is performed as well.

Kinda just feels random I dunno. I would've just preferred a concerto for a tapdancer rather than something that switches around a lot. Some of the marimba writing was nice

Some very clever writting in there - but as a percussionist, I wouldn't want to play it.
