@The Crappy Drummer I practice, stringing "rudiments" or "melodic sequences" together every night while the wife and I watch TV. I'll create solos along with the music in the score of the show. Imho Louie was one of the most accomplished drummers ever recorded in this realm. He is certainly my favorite of all time and I still marvel at his musicality on the drumset back when no one else did what he was doing. Yeah, he could swing, but his double bass prowess and ghosting techniques were and still are as good as it gets and HE originated many of the groove feels made famous. He was a masterful drummer and teacher. Thanks Louie. 🥁🎵💚

You get it for sure! I have gotten mostly positive comments on the Louie vids I put up. But some people just don't get it. One recent comment said something like "WTF lol". Like this was somehow amusing or stupid. That person, if a drummer, could probably not play as good with both hands as Bellson could with one. Louie was the greatest of his time period IMHO. Not the absolute fastest while playing, I will give that to Buddy I think. But Louie sounded better. His solos were more musical I think.

Oh, man, SO MUCH NOSTALGIA with this clip! This was the video my first teacher sent me home with after my first lesson (24 years ago this week!). I remember trying to practice along with Louie here, but I had one of those “sound off” pads with zero bounce, so it became super frustrating really fast. I remember my old man noticing how peeved I was, and he looked around and grabbed our kitchen cutting board, and said “here try this.” That was an instant game changer, and the next time through Bellson’s exercise here, I could play a roll!

Good way if looking at it I am a beginner with 6 months, but not a single in person lesson. I realized how bad I was just about a month ago!! I could play some songs. Probably not well, but I was having lots of fun. Then I realized I had hit a plateau. I couldn't get any faster, and it wasn't able to play more complicated songs. I have a disability with my left hand, so it makes it more difficult. But I realized I had to get back to basics. The rudiments just never made any sense to me whatsoever. I just thought, what's the difference if I'm doing right left right right or right right right right. 😆 🤣😂🤣 So I found out about Louis Bellson. Now I am practicing rudiments, and trying to learn basic jazz for independence. It also is helping me with my dynamics. I swear the only way I ever had a drum was hard. Same with cymbals of course. This guy was an eye opener to me. Thanks for commenting.

For some reason, and this happens often, I never got a notification from KZread about this comment. So thank you, very belated. I appreciate the comment and agree! I mean some of my favorite rock drummers are great but those guys were just so different. And while I can look at some metal drummers who are just insanely fast with double pedals, trying to play 4 on the floor at 230 BPM steadily on a single pedal is impressive. Then playing triplets and crazy fills or ghost notes over it. This is why I started playing Jazz a couple months ago. So I can get better at drumming overall.

I love listening to these musicians that basically shaped or perfected or even created many of the techniques used today. Be it drums, bass, guitar and so on. A great example of the older generation shaping the younger is Joey Jordinson whose teacher played funk. That in turn helped to shape the very distinct sound that put Slipknot on the map. Edit: And in turn migh've showed many metal drummer that you can play fun things to. Not just be as brutal as possible all the time.

Thank you for commenting. I had no idea that Jordinson had that influence. I setup a jazz kit because I wanted to start playing Jazz, because of Louis Bellson and people like him. I don't have a teacher and only drumming 7 -8 months. Friends ask why jazz when I like Hard rock, Prog and Metal so much? Many of those drummers learned jazz and it made them amazing and often pioneering drummers. I want to play it to learn independence, dynamics, and the ability to speed up and slow down while still controlling volume. Watching Louis Bellson showed me what I didn't know.

Can I just say, isn't it absolutely amazing how evolved drum technique was back then! New techniques have emerged and new trends but the fundamentals of this time period in this video are still the core of drumming progress today! I've seen in recent years a drummer who could play multiple drum and percussion items with his feet exclusively thus achieving a drum and percussion unit by himself alone via his multiple pedal set up along with his incredible independence yet has now disappeared into obscurity while this long aged video of gene is still relevant and valued today. The ethos of drumming is the fundamentals and not the extreme one can bring. You can certainly find your niche but don't expect to replace Deep rooted drumming culture so soon

So now I am concentrating on the basics, and jazz drumming. The jazz to gain independence and learn dynamics. The touch Louise Bellson had amazed me! Thanks for commenting brother.

@@Spagz hey brother, thanks for sharing your insight of your journey. I'm a drummer of many years so I'll happily share with you and especially considering your seriousness and passion. I was lucky in that when I was younger I gravitated to the fundamentals. But I noticed many drumming peers of mine not enjoying that stuff and viewing it as homework of sorts. I recommend you establish your connection with such practice models of isolating single aspects of drumming, like a rudiment pattern (paradiddle for example as you mentioned), and practice one single aspect for five minutes straight! Yes! Have a timer and play one pattern for that duration. You not only practice the physical bit also the mental. The mental will be your ability to play and adhere to a song for its duration with equal concentration. A good teacher thought me to practice to a clock and time the session and the idea. Try think of it as a meditation and not a real drum performance. Include a meditation of a paradiddle to a metronome and a five minute timer and you'll find yourself beginning to enjoy the practice element. What I like about your case though is that you are self thought. One danger I experienced when I was learning from teachers was I was practicing my individual voice out of me. You have been developing your individual by self learning. That said, don't disregard the option of classes. It's access to information. You stroke me though as a person who won't fall into the trap I had, ie you won't follow lessons as gospel and lose your individual voice via practice regiment (which I'm telling you happened to me). Sorry for long message, just want to share that with you

@@brianmcguire5175 thanks again! I've been doing paradiddles for a timed ten minutes twice, with a break in between. I have a disability in my left hand. I have no feeling in my thumb and first two fingers from an accident. Very little strength, although I have near full manipulation of them. The only strength or real control is in my last two fingers. I was using a device to keep the stick in my hand, which got me pretty far. But it was part of my wall I hit. So I decided a few days ago to try playing without it. It's very painful. My nerve was severed at the wrist leaving now feeling, but I still feel pain "inside" my hand. I would imagine much of my hand muscles have atrophy as well at this point. It's a lot to explain so I won't. But I am determined to at least try playing with just my hand, even though I have no grip to speak of. I've been toying with traditional grip (or as close as I can get). Not sure that is going to work. I can't take the pain too long. So I switch grips when that happens. I also am determined to become ambidextrous on the kit, so that I can force my left hand more. Not sure if this is just further complicating things. It's all an experiment lol. Trying to find a teacher so that I can get advice on how to best deal with it. Part of me thinks it would just be better to learn how to be faster with my right and take up the slack. But rudiments and notations don't work like that. I overthink it all too! Always having fun though. And I want this really bad. Thanks again for your insight, and your time.

Many people have commented on that pad. They still sell them and include them with student snares I use one all the time! As for grip, I think several people were surprised he taught this without using traditional grip. I believe he realized all the modern rock drummers were doing it already, and honestly easier for most new drummers. He was never afraid to innovate or allow progress. If it would mean more students might (stick) with drumming, he would want that. When I started playing Jazz I tried using traditional so I would hit the snare softer. It is very difficult for me though with my disability. My thumb and first two fingers don't work. But it is difficult to use any grip so.... 😅 Thanks for commenting!!

Absolutely! Cool that you have Palmer in that list! Carl Palmer is always on my list of best rock drummers. It always amazes me how so few people even know who he is. He is just overlooked and under appreciated. And on that list you just gave, he is still alive and performing! I saw him live with both ELP and Asia. Great! Not to side track too much from the man, Louie Bellson. This guy amazes me beyond. Thanks for watching and your insight.
