LOUD rattle from rear of truck - Bad Parking Brake Shoes - FIXED! - EASY
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I locate and fix the source of a loud rattling noise coming from the rear of the truck. Upon further inspection it was only a rusty loose parking brake shoe (emergency brake/hand brake) in the rear wheel. Which makes sense since the parking brake pedal goes to the floor with no resistance. The truck ended up needing a new set of parking brake shoes for both rear wheels (Duralast part # 781). Easily replaced with some basic mechanics tools.

Omg. So glad I found this.. I’m 98.9% sure this is what my problem is
You had me at “that ain’t good”, but sealed the deal with Tupperware comedy lol Great stuff. I’ll definitely be back for more repairs when they come up.
I wish I had found this sooner.... I've had this noise for a while tiny bit different but this is by far the best sounding video of this noise. I was 90% sure this was probably my problem now I'm 100% sure and I guess will be freezing tmrw
It's so nice to be able to maintain your vehicles and save $$$. This will help others for sure. Thanks for sharing!

From one DIY Dude to another, thank you!
Thanks so much man! I was about to buy an entire rear end, and you saved my money!
Great video! Literally had the same issue and worked on it today and fixed it! But in addition to the adjustment part, and also just as important, are the tiny retainer clips that hold the edge of the brakes pad housing. Mine were very loose and bent out causing the pads to rattle around whenever I hit a bump in the road. So bottom line, do your adjustment shown in the video, and also make sure those clips are tight. Also I gained so much more e-brake engagement once i made the adjustment correctly. That's one way to tell if you did it right.
Finally! Thats what i got Thank you!
Very good information. Thanks for doing the video.
I have a 2006 Hummer H2 and both Rear Parking Brakes are Engaged even though the Parking Brake Foot Pedal Is Not Depressed to the floor board.....I Have A Feeling I will be experiencing a similar situation!!!! Thank You!!!! Great Video! Keep It Up! Very Informative and great visuals and Editing!!!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ‼️‼️‼️ it came out to be that old rusted horse shoe lookn thing / emergency break, as soon as I pulled that disc out that peace came out flying I had to replace it wit a new one thanks for the video
Thanks for this video it really helped
Had the same thing with my 03 Sierra gotta love rust!
Awesome video, Bro. With the #8 dust shields installed, you can't finger wiggle the e brake w/ the truck on the ground. Also, with the dust shield off, you *could have* hit both sides of the rotor with brake cleaner, lol... although I'm sure you only got dirty fingers on one side 😅
THANK YOU!!🎉
I had a very similar issue on my 4th gen 4runner. Thought something very wrong had occurred but luckily it turned out to be just the springs holding the brake shoes and very inexpensive.
When my rearend went out it sounded like this lol 😂
Just had the same problem and I was terrified...Just knew it was a bad rear end.
Omg thank you so much I thought my tahoe was giving up on me 🤦🏼do I have to replace it once a take it off I'm going to get the part next week but that nosie is killing me ughhh
yea I'm thinking I have the same issue on my Denali 2nd Gen thanks for the video.

Hey man I know you commented awhile ago but was this the issue I have a clunking noise as well
My 2002 chevy 1500 2wd has a crazy rattle when I hit bumps sometimes making a quick grinding sound. It's driving me insane. Found a broken shock mount on LR on top and took off shock but sound still there. Gonna check this UPDATE..took off LR tire, caliper, rotor and sure enough the ebrake shoes were just flopping around not attached to any hardware. Just took them out as I didn't have a ebrake anyways and BINGO rattle gone! Love my chevy only has 152k miles.
i have a 07 jeep grand cherokee making same noise, mechanic said it was a brake cable. it went away for about a month then came back everytime i hit a bump it sounds like something falls then the loud noise continues until i reverse then throw it back in drive and the sound goes away. very strange
You can buy Dorman split backing plates so you don’t have to pull the axle. RockAuto has them and if I remember right they are lifetime warranted. I put some on a over 5 years ago I have another set to put on. Btw in these trucks it is good to have a functional park brake. I had a front rubber hose blow out and lost all brakes.

I wondered if there was a replacement backing like you described. Great info! Thanks!
Good example of why I fluid film the underside of my truck

Man that stuff smells bad still not as bad as the Redline gear oil that stuff smelled bad new.
I got a kinda similar noise coming from a 03 Silverado but diferencial fluid was leaking then I cleaned out the fluid and now somehow it’s not leaking but I still hear the noise
Thanks! This saved us. We Thought it was the air shock pump, or something electrical. This saved us time and money, to just re-adjust the parking brake.
I have a grinding sound but mine are break dry could it be bad break shoes too ?
My 2002 1500 making the same noise.. I dread taking the rotor off but I'm 99% sure that's the same issue I'm having.. thanks buddy

Have a 2002 1500 with rattle over bumps. It was ebrake shoes flopping around.
Bless you for this video, my 99 suburban k1500 just started on right rear. Question do you think i should do both sides?

I don’t suppose you’d have to, but it would be best probably
Thank you so much!! I have the same truck same paint but Chevy making same noise and I couldn’t find it for the life of me until today. If my E brake cable is broken and I never use e brake can I get away with just taking out old shoe without replacing? Or is that sketchy??

If it's alreadsy not functioning it won't be in any worse shape but better to be functioning if possible.
So this occurs only when the brakes are applied? Mines doing it when I suddenly brake hard and make hard turns.
Have this same noise but it sounds like it’s coming from the front end… I took out my front driveshaft thinking it’s the u joint & replaced cv axles.. not sure what else could make that noise…
Had the exact same thing happen to me. I thought I had a bearing in the rear gone for a little bit
