Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge -Versions Comparison- Amiga, CD32, Atari ST and much more!

Ойындар

Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge is the third game in the Lotus racing series.
The third game in the series combined the gameplay aspects of its predecessors, allowing players to choose between racing opponents of Lotus Turbo Challenge or the arcade-like time trials of Lotus 2. The two-player option was retained and the music selection feature returns (Patrick Phelan's soundtrack to Lotus III spawned many modern remixes). Lotus III also added a third car - a concept Lotus M200 automobile - and allowed the player to choose which one to race with. The game recycled most of the graphics from Lotus 2, but added a number of new sceneries.

This was a great series of games on the Amiga, with the second being my favorite. I preferred the music of the Amiga even over the CD32 which I feel didn't have the power/grunt of the original.

The CD32 music being worse than the Amiga music despite being on a CD... Unfortunately that's quite typical of early CD based games. The idea was to fill that CD with junk.

At the time CD32 ports of Amiga titles like this made piracy feel justified. Sticking a 700k a500 game on a 650mb cd and adding some perfunctory cd audio to sell it to suckers is not taking advantage of the hardware.

To be fair, the disc was the Lotus Trilogy, and came with all 3 titles. But the value of the bundle was still extremely questionable for anyone who owned the games already. They really did balls up the music on it. Incidentally, the CD32 was ludicrously easy to pirate games on once CD burners became common!

Not sure if it official but there is an AGA fix for Lotus III for A1200 which gets rid of all the frame drops of the game running on A500/1000/2000 version, it doesn't run full speed as Lotus II on those machines.

The Amiga version is disappointing. They tried to add more elaborate graphics and the result was a slower frame rate - what was the point? Lotus 2 got the balance right.

The terrible ST AY soundchip strikes again. Going as I did from POKEY and SID on the XL and C64, finding the AY chip on a 16-bit micro, came as quite a shock. Megadrive version seems botched 😐

It wasn't a good sound chip and they certainly should have used better. But it was available, well known, low bandwidth and most of all cheap. What bugs me is when they say the Amiga has poor sound quality compared to the pure waveforms from the ST. What a load of BS, the ST sound quality was never that great and Atari apparently agreed, as they added a sound chip to compete with the Amiga in the STe, and it still wasn't as good. I'm not saying that there is no good music for the ST (as I know there is) but it has to be specifically for the ST for it to work, as trying to play music like on the Amiga it cannot compete.
