Lotus Elise S1 - The car that saved Lotus | Future Classics with Becky Evans S1 E1
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The little Lotus Elise S1 was both a return to the company's original ethos of simplicity and low weight and a market revolution when it was launched just over a quarter of a century ago. Here was a car that wore its engineering proudly and offered the enthusiastic owner the visceral driving thrills that only a beautifully executed, innovative lightweight design can offer. Superseded by multiple generations the original Elise remains the sweet spot and is assured of its classic status. So what better car to kick off our brand new series than the sports car that saved Lotus?
Welcome to Future Classics where Becky Evans takes a closer look at the modern cars set to be the stars of the classic car scene.

Very moving when you spoke of your father in law. How lovely to have had that relationship and connection. Wonderful.
The smile said it all. Always one of my favourite sports cars and tantalisingly close to my budget 6-7yrs ago. Sadly not now. S1 prices are on the up and up...

I have a Series 2 and love it. She described the drive very well - especially enjoyed her comments that her cheeks hurt from smiling. That is actually one of the best ways to describe the experience of an Elise - mine hurt after every drive. The handling and road feedback are just so crisp and the sound of the exhaust so engaging that it is hard to not step out thinking it is one of the best and most fun cars out there. If you haven't had a chance, try to find one and drive it because words don't fully capture how they really feel.
I hadn't seen this presenter before. Much better then some of the well known ones.

Becky's enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment made this a cracking video to watch. Awesome.
Aaah just watching the wheel move about all over the place on bumpy b-roads, really miss mine.
A friend briefly had a Vauxhall VX220 Turbo in 2008 (until some old duffer in a Nissan Micra hit it and wrecked it). We took the car out on all the A & B roads round Delamere in Cheshire and thrashed it. The harder you drove it the better it felt. The Elise & VX were both excellent cars.

The VX doesn't look as exotic. GM cut corners with it too so it has a few issues the Lotus doesn't. On the VX the steel rear subframe isn't galvanized, so they rust badly. Also the Elise is lighter.
I've never driven any lotuses, but I'm still a lotus esprit fan.. The cool factor in their looks is timeless
Apart from the Caterham 7, there simply isn’t a better raw sports car than the Elise & an early S1 is the lightest & rawest of them all. Mine has 150BHP & it’s a quick thing that gives you the high you need & the whole ritual of it being ‘a different’ kind of car is all part of its appeal.
I love this little thing. Masterful engineering
Great review! Looking forward to more of these from you.
Mint. I remember first seeing Becky on the Ben Collins stunt driver dvd. Great stuff.
Great video!
Still in my top 3 cars ever driven. Drove one on a track. Now got a Cayman 718. Different beast but love it too.
I'd love to know what Andrew's set up is on the damping/springs/suspension height... it looks a little bouncier than what I would have expected from stock. Love the choice of wheels :) And LRG, just like mine!
Amazing car!!! 😍😍😍

LOVE this car! Whilst living in London back in 1999-2003 wanted so badly to buy one and take it back to the US(home) but could not....! :( NOW however, one can import to the US via the "25 year rule" any vehicle from anywhere as long as it's 25 yrs or older. I have had for the past few years a 1993 Nissan Gloria GT right-hand drive JDM and love it too, mush different car than the Elise. As well have owned 6 MX-5's.....wish I had a Elise. Cheers for the video!
Thats a very lovely review and oh my, cant believe I found an owner that has his S1 longer than I have. But I definitely beat him on the mileage I ran mine.
Thanx 🙏🙏🙏

Hello Becky am sure it was an Honor for Goodwood to ask you to present a Legend in British Motoring, I enjoyed the 2004 Elise and miss the 6 Speed Manual Transmission Engine blew and would have had to replace everything on it to restore to original spec. It even had the original Radiator Coolant, as well as the chassis was twisted because I drove it hard every day. It was faster than Challenger SRT8 i WASN'T RACING just running to work during 90 probation period. It had 196 hp New job and couldn't wait 6 months to restore as it was my daily, and would have spent $55k + so I Looked for a White Performance Pack 2 with a Manual Transmission, and All white ones were basic without safety feature (Rental Fleet) So I Bought the only 2016 Mustang Performance Pack with Automatic Paddle Shifters, and Black . To spec this in November 2015 (prior to COVID-19 Condition or Chip Shortage ) it would have taken 6 months, and didn't want to wait that long. Therefore, bought the only Performance Pack a black 2016 👦🏻👍🏻🏁🏎 Magneride Suspension is awesome in the Canyons
Jeans. But also, sweatpants. Genius.
My 1999 S1 111S is the same colour (Nautilus Blue) and interior as this. It had a tidy up of some gel cracking and then a partial re-spray and a professional cut and polish earlier this year. You wouldn't believe how much sparkle has been put back into the paintwork. The paint looked a bit boring like the one in this review before but now it's just outstanding on a sunny day.

It's KZread. She's a presenter. She's not "claiming" to be anything.
The over-the-top music production is pointless & irritating.
Becky, you are undoubtedly, as the Japanese would say, kawaii. This characteristic, alone, makes your videos watchable, even if the content is debatable. An example is this on one of the most uncomfortable, cranky, un-usable and fringe conveyances of the 20th Century, the Lotus Elise. If you are Becky sized kawaii or a typical small ( but perfectly formed) Englishman, entry, exit and operation of this roller skate death trap is marginally feasible ( and unlike the similarly dimensioned Mazda MX 5 (which normal sized humans, I.e., Americans, Australians, Canadians, etc., can transact with ease and enjoyment, relishing intense Japanese thoroughness in design and reliability) the concern for the operator seems to have been a distant last on the designer's fantasy concept. At 6' 1", my eyes looked over the windscreen frame, entry was a gymnastic challenge worthy of a gold medal and the interior as congenial as an egg carton. Tested in the middle of a BMW M 3 and E34 M 5, as a weekend relaxation device, the Lotus was a twitchy, noisy, harshly resistant brat of a car, barely more safe than a go kart. I'll let you guess which German offering got the nod. But, Becky, you could be singing the praises of a John Deere harvester and the blokes would still watch, though.

@@steveluck9541 Keep dieting, son. I will continue to drink in a depth of engineering perfection explicit as distance is devoured effortlessly and with confidence at 300 kph plus. I remember Jack Brabham commenting, " I'd let Pgil Clark race off into the distance in his Lotus and break down while I won the race". Has the chassis delaminayed yet?
@peterthompson9854
Жыл бұрын
@@oweneather1435 You're on thin ground there comparing the F1 history between Lotus and BMW. You are also in thin ground comparing the engineering of Lotus to BMW. The production of the Elise lead to several revolutions in car production and Lotus were absolute ground breakers in race car innovation. The MX5 you mention would not have existed without the Elan. In the Elise, which you call a death-trap, you are sat inside a tub of metal, I'd say you were safer in a crash than a Mazda. I wish you every joy with your BMW, and understand that the Elise isn't for everyone, but acknowledge the achievements of the car and the company.
Becky, on further reflection, you exhibit all of the lack of awareness of the direct inputs of 1960s ( and either side) cars. You rightly appreciate simple dash boards, direct steering, manual gear changes, communicative chassis and audible engines. All this was standard in the era to which I refer. You, surprisingly, disparage the Mazda MX 5 ( possibly because it is Japanese, nailed the formula you endorse and has sold over a million, not a miserable 8000), the car which regenerated the attraction of lightweight roadsters and created the market awareness without which the Elise would not exist. You may be interested to know that Mazda's chief designer gained the interest in roadsters of his President by lending him his Triumph TR 6. That worthy drove from Mazda's factory to Tokyo for a meeting and returned full of enthusiasm for creating a version for Mazda, as was intended. Get a TR 6 or, better, a TR 5 for its sublime Michelotti styling, and see what the Japanese executive did. Lightweight, classic straight six tuntable to 200 bhp plus, and all the sensations you extol in the Elise. That's the inspiration, not some original concept from Lotus, cashing in on Mazda's initiative. PS As well, Becky, grammar! " I'm sat...". Remember your tenses from lower school Englih, " I'm sitting...". Other distracting errors infect your otherwise charming delivery. You are a native English speaker after all.
