This is brilliant! Seeing Ms. Lehman showing how to "deliver" and express a song so exquisitely. Also, she seems like she was a delightful person. I'm glad she acknowledged the pianist who did a beautiful job with her accompaning.
I'm just hearing this charming melody for the first time. What a wonderful surprise to learn of the existence of such a beautiful piece!
The great, the one and only Lehman. The most passionate interpreter of lied and opera!
expression is so important in music, not only the voice quality... she show us how. thanks.
a gracious lady, a star of the first magnitude
LOTTE LEHMANN - Unvergessen, unverwechselbar.
Well, I am germann and I love this song so much, it reminded me of my Grandfahter how he must have felt when he met and marrfied my grandmother. Well. I decided to write a third verse with a happy ending. "

Thank you! What a nice idea! I am just hearing this melody for the first time and am enchanted.
Thank you so much for posting this, and giving credit to Madame Gwendolyn Koldofsky. I studied with her at the Thornton School of Music (USC) and was hoping to find something of hers on youtube. She often accompanied Lotte Lehmann. Thank you for a wonderful Saturday morning discovery!! marcie
I saw L. as late as the mid 60's in a master class and she still could not resist dismissing the singer and by then mostly declaiming the 'Lorelei' of Schumann. I thought she did nothing for the singers, but held on to a way of expressing her own love for this music.
She mentioned that she has lost her voice... but somehow her singing made me like the song. Last night, I went back and sang the song to myself, and somehow got a little bored. But this morning, when I watched her instruction again, I fell in love with this little Lied once again. Sie ist ja wunderbar...
Alfred Brendel remembers one of her Vienna masterclasses in "The Lady from Arezzo". He says none of the Vienna singing teachers sent any of their pupils. "The way she sang, or rather suggested, Frauenliebe und -leben, because by that time there was hardly any voice left, brought all of us to tears"
Spectacular!
merveilleux grande Lotte
Very old fashion way of explaining how to sing, but she remains an excellent interpreter of Lieder and opera. Thanks for uploading this jewel!
Sie hat gesungen, daß es Sterne rührte! (Richard Strauss) Without a doubt the greatest female singer of the 20th Century.
Lehmann is living the text in a way that is difficult to impart to others. But it was what made her a star in America, even singing texts the audience didn't understand.

Difficult to impart to others ?!?
Operaman41 OBVIOUSLY didn't learn anything from Lotte's great lesson. I am an Opera Singer, and if I had teachers who could have taught me to interpret music with this kind of dedication and commitment, then I would be a far greater singer today. This mediocre soprano is not there for a voice lesson!!!!! That's not the point. She's there to gain a little something new about interpretation...I believe she received this gift!!!

She changed like day and night just by watching Lehmann. Speaks volumes about how great she was as a singer and teacher but also about how eager the student was to learn.

Liebe Frau Sonne !
Does anyone know who is playing the grand piano ?
@cosmokronos Sonntag, by Brahms
@pianomags Lehmann was huge on getting her pupils to find their own voice/ originality, in theory anyway. I speculate that she just couldn't resist singing, in this instance.
Which just goes to show. You can sing as pretty as you like but if there is no intellect, spirit, emotion and experience behind it then it's not worth much.
REALLY GOOD. But bad for masterclass. This is humiliating for the student. Lehmann didn't give any advice- just showed her how to do it. I think she had to make her understand and not make her just copy.

We can all criticise, nevertheless the singer sang much more animatedly and beautifully the second time through. So...learning.

No. Copy, copy….if you have talent you will appropriate it in your own way.

The only thing missing from this video is Larry, Moe, and Curley!

Yes, she was fantastic. But to my liking Elisabeth schwarzkopf is number One!
