Jackson admitted in some interview that he did not want Hobbit to take so long to produce because he wanted to finish them while - it might seem brutal to say.. - Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee are still alive. Right that makes sense, but having read the Mordor Orc Workers Rights Code 3 times I still cannot interpret how to proceed, and I do not want to escalate this to the Eye himself. If it is a permanent disability, we have to provide damages and disability support based on the guy's length of service. Now, if that orc lost his head, we have to provide damages to his family. But, if we somehow write this off as case of suicide as a result of long work hours, we can get off with a small fine by the Eye provided we promise to give the workers more break time to take off stress.

well, gorbag is a badass. he dropkicks that guy out of the window, proceeds to slaughter that room full of uruks by himself, and then goes up again to kill frodo. it takes sam to knife him from behind to finally take him out.

Can we just talk about how bad a** the first orc is, he is loyal to Sauron unlike the other one who just wants the shirt for himself, then when he gets kicked down and is surrounded by like 40 unfriendly orcs he immediately just starts swinging and drop kicks one out the window?! AND SURVIVES THAT FIGHT, Mordor needed more like that, slap a gold star on that one.

Orcs by nature live in little tribes. They're loyal to and proud of their own tribe (and apparently, tribal leader), but don't get along with the other tribes. They don't even speak same languages, so that they have to use Common Speech to communicate with "foreign" Orcs. The only circumstances where Orcs are gathered into huge armies like this is when some powerful yet evil being, such as Sauron, rises and basically enslaves them to his use with mind control. Orcs hate Sauron as much as they hate the Elves and Men, and don't like serving him. In the book, Shagrat and Gorbag talk about this and other even suggests that they sneak away with a few good lads and be free of big bosses, like in the old good times. Basically, these Orcs are living under (to them) unnatural and stressful circumstances.

Orcs are naturally evil, these orcs in particular are bound to the will of sauron, and are not considered traditional orcs as would be those which are elves corrupted by melkor, which would cover youre statement, by saurons orcs dnt have a will of their own whatsoever.

Always been fascinated by orcs and loved every bit of screen and page-time they get. I think this scene paints the picture of tensions building up in this particular outpost - bad news from the battle of Pellenor fields, talks of desertion plus black Uruks and regular orcs bunking together in close quarters = recipe for disaster. No real authority figure beyond the Uruk and orc captains (shagrat And Gorbag i assume). Living next door to Shelob can’t be too relaxing either. Looks like the Uruks and orcs were waiting for a fight to break out at any moment. It’s actually quite impressive how effectively the two groups obliterated each other. Notice how it’s only dead bodies Sam sees, no wounded. These boys knew how how to kill, and they went for the throat (literally and figuratively). Only THREE uruks remained for Sam to take care of, plus Gorbag and Shagrat themselves. While black Uruks are known as the bigger and more capable warriors (considering 4 of them survived as opposed to just one morgul orc), you can also see the morgul orcs hold there own and go down with a fight. They are fast, agile and pack an unexpected ammount of strength in their smaller, wiry bodies.

This scene has always struck me as utterly brilliant. The way conflict so easily breaks out amongst the ranks, both orcs and uruks joining without knowing the cause or even so much as think to question it for even a second. The way they all brutally, violently butcher their own kin, comrades and fellows in arms, NOT over a dispute, but seemingly as though it's nothing more than out of the pure instinct to kill, nothing more than part of their natural order. The way that they in a mass savage rampage tear each other apart without so much as needing a reason other than the thrill of the kill itself, all lends me to believe these creatures not to be of "evil" ilk. For there to be evil, there MUST be at least a shred, a glimmer of good. But in orcs and uruks, there is nothing discernable as "good". They are not evil, but only foul. The most foul creatures imaginable.

Orc morality's complicated. In the books, the orcs figure some great Elf lord must've hurt Shelob but left Frodo behind, and Gorbag says "Typical elf trick." This implies orcs have _some_ sense of right and wrong (they know leaving your buddies to die is bad)... but in the very same scene they also talk about finding one of their fellow orcs strung up live by Shelob, laughing at him, and leaving him to get eaten. So it's ambiguous.

@@mysteryman6918 Not only they only see elves when they are being killed by them, I read somewhere that Morgoth has brainwhased the orcs to think that enemies, especially elves, are orc eater demons who will torture them beyond death, so logically they are going to think the elves are the evil ones, indepently of it having some truth behind it or if they are going to do the exact same thing they think elves would do.

This just shows how important to Sauron were Witch-king and the Nazgul, among other lieutenants. The orcs are brutal and can overwhelm their foes but you need somebody powerful enough to keep them in line. Sauron couldn't micro manage the entire army on his own.

Not actually. It was the will of Sauron what kept the orcs in line and order. And Sauron was not giving any thought to his armies at this point (he was fully focused to the battle of Pelennor fields). Otherwise Sauron didn't actually needed Nazgul to maintain the order and prevent chaos and self-butchering of the orcs. Only his will was enough

2:19 Peter Jackson said in the commentary that there's an entire scene missing here where Sam uses the Phial to get past these Watcher statues. He said they did film the scene but decided later on to remove it for reasons he didn't get into (time? pacing?). He said hopefully, we'll get to see it in a future DVD release.

Oh yeah, there was a close up of those statues which were the same ones from the book that made a malevolent barrier to stop sam from passing till he shined the phial. I noticed the movie zoomed in on them then next scene sam is passed em, disappointing, but so was having the extended balrog fight (with the nameless creatures shown) cut off because cgi was pricey then.

He’s an orc captain, and orcs move up in rank based on toughness. He’s also smaller and faster than them. So he either killed them all or escaped.

Not the telepathy combined them all together, it was done by a fear and by governors. Actually Sauron dont using telepathy to combine orcs (poor slaves, that not need his attention, he is too moral high for them).

Well according to the books the 10,000 orcs that were used to attack Minas Tirith were but a small army when compared to all of Sauron's forces so yeah I think it's mostly because he has like a million more to spare

@@masterninjaize Actually in the book there was more like 200000 orcs at minas tirith. There were 10000 at helm's deep but yeah you are right he had probably several million servants at his disposal most of them being orcs but many others

The personality and relationship of the orcs and uruks were so great in this scene.

It never fails to make me chuckle when Sam tried to scare the orcs

It's kind of a bastardization of the book scene though. I mean sure, having Sam grunt and do some shadow theater is easier than showing orcs seeing him as the great elf lord clad in clothes made of light, with the full might of the Ring glowing in his palm...

Throughout the entire trilogy Sam was my favorite his courage and determination is what made the movie so good
