Pippin might be the archetypal fool from mythology, but it’s his unassuming nature that left Sauron and his allies underestimating his significance. Pippin had an even bigger role than he knows. His loyalty is what makes him a true Fellowship member - not just to his fellow Fellowship members, but also to Denethor to honor Boromir that even when the odds become insurmountable, he still chooses to fight in the war.

1:23 "Is there any hope, Gandalf. . . ?" - "There was never much hope. Just a fool's hope." The amount of times Gandalf has called Pippin (the youngest member of the Fellowship) a fool, makes this line all the more poignant. Gandalf admits, as an apology, but also in this simple way, that it was his foolish hope that Sam and Frodo would be able to make it to Mordor to destroy the ring, (much less survive carrying it,a in Frodo's case). I think Gandalf was amending some of his harshness on Pippin here, and apologizing, admitting he was a fool too. But the irony is that the one that was considered a 'fool', was the one that never really lost hope in the Fellowship, makes Pippin anything but a fool. His direction towards Treebeard, and his lighting of the beacons were essential, but also showed insight and cleverness - even when guided by Gandalf. Gandalf though he was a fool in Moria, but trusted Pippin enough to see to the lighting of the beacons of Gondor. He never would have trusted that to a fool. And even when there doesn't seem to be much hope, Gandalf still tells Pippin the truth. He doesn't try to spare him of the larger world or events happening around them.

Very few films in this world can capture the sheer magnitude of what was coming beyond the horizon the way LOTR could. The simple act of a nighttime moment such as this, with the ever present booming thunder in the background and the eerily ominous presence of Mordor just beyond the mountains staring Minas Tirith in the face like the devil himself. It creates such a monumental picture and captured so perfectly with the filming techniques that Peter Jackson pulls off in this.

I know from a story perspective showing the haradrim and corsairs makes sense because they come into play later in the film, but it would’ve been nice to show the easterlings again. I think you get about 5 seconds of them in this film in the background.

'His full strength's gathered Not only Orcs but Men as well Legions of Haradrim from the South Mumakil Mercenaries from the coast Corsairs of Umbar All will answer Mordor's call' --Gandalf the White This is the scene that shows the true strength of Gondor, in comparison to just 10,000 Uruk Hai attacking the Helmet Deep of Rohan in the Two Towers, Sauron seemed to have thrown everything he had at Gondor. Although Gondor at this stage is experiencing decline, but still is playing the leading role of preventing the orcs from overwhelming Middle Earth, even though Gondor at this stage was not as strengthful as it used to be, Sauron dare not to underestimate his enemy. end of my rant, my question is: So why the bloody hell does Peter Jackson had to make Gondorian army so utterly ineffective and useless in the film?

  • @twlotrmgskarate9040

Before I answer your question, I would like to point out that the force of 10,000 Uruk Hai being sent to a 300-500 garrison at Helm's Deep is quite a display of Rohan's power as well. Now to answer your question... I don't think the Gondorian military is portrayed as completely useless in these films. Because if you really think about it, the garrison at both Osgiliath and Minas Tirith both held back the much larger orc forces back for about a whole night..... I think what PJ was trying to do was illustrate the utter hopelessness of the situation, which in all seriousness is kind of a major theme in many of Tolkien's work

Like you said, Sauron was pulling no punches here. At Helm's Deep Rohan and their Elf allies had to contend with footsoldiers, siege ladders, the occasional wooden battering ram and a handful of black powder bombs. Compare that to Pelennor Fields, where Gondor's army faced footsoldiers, catapults, siege towers, Grond the battering ram, Easterlings and Haradrim riding atop mumakil. Not only that, but you had various factors that sapped morale, including Denethor's poor leadership, the catapulting of severed heads over the city walls and the terrifying presence of all nine Nazgul and their fell beasts. Given the circumstances, I'd say the soldiers of Gondor fared about as well as you'd expect.

CentreLeft Libertarian the effect of having nine Nazgul, who basically breathe fear, riding over the city, screeching at them to demoralise them while disabling their primary defenses would probably be why. At one point in the last book it describes the effect that the Nazgul's cries had upon Pippin while he's standing on the walls of Minas Tirith, and he's almost incapacitated with fear. That would make it a lot harder to fight effectively if you're completely demoralised and terrified (apart from Gandalf's rallying).

The reveal of his identity is only accentuated by the accompanying scene of the WK physically assuming his role as the Lord of the Nazgul, donning his gauntlets and helmet, so that he can finally be told apart from the other Nine.

I find them really good, except that they don't have the "scale" and character development of this trilogy. Feels more limited but i never read the books so...

Johan Dale Different storyline, different characters that's all... You can never beat LOTR but the Hobbit is still quite good !

Plus, I can't remember one name if the dwarves. Which isn't good for a movie.

I liked how the thunder strikes repeatedly and at the same time Pippin is telling "its so quiet" :D

I'd like to think it's a warm cocoa or some tea in that cup, makes it more cozy standing on the balcony at a high level building watching the mountains and only imagining what horrors are behind them..

"He's the Witch-King of Angmar. You have met him before. He stabbed Frodo at the Weathertop." Pippin's swift flasback of Nazgul attack and the Witch-King stabbing Frodo, with Frodo's echoing scream of pain, was quite chilling.
