Sam's boyfriend devoted so much of his time looking for not only her,but also other missing hikers. He actually found Rachel Lakoduk while he helped find Tom Simonseth up Hidden Lake Trail in Marblemount. He's an amazing person who I hope one day finds closure and peace. While looking for Sam he'd run across people on the trail who didn't know who he was but gossiped to him that they bet her boyfriend (him) killed her. And he just kept going. 😢💔

Misadventure is the cause of these disappearances 9 times out of 10 but that doesn't make it any easier on the families and friends of the missing. Sam's boyfriend has dedicated a lot of time to a lot of these kinds of searches and so eerily found Rachel. Like he was drawn to her. I am out there all the time and haven't seen flyers on trees, nor do I usually stop in any of the small towns like Verlot or Silverton. Maybe Granite falls, but I have not noticed any flyers there either. The only place I remember seeing any flyers in the last several years was on an informational sign board near darrington, and the signs weren't even for missing hikers.

This episode reminded me of something I learned when I was a young teenager. We had a spot we liked to go to along the river that if you walked out of your way to a road to get to, took about 15 minutes. We tried by following the most direct route along the edge of the river, it took almost 2 hours. We knew the river led to it but, we almost felt like we were lost because of the amount of time it took to get there. Perceived short cuts can be the death of you I've learned, it's something I have never forgotten.

I did something similar as a boy aged maybe 8 or 9 and ended up hypothermic as the day waned. Hot as blazes at 3:30. Much, much cooler at 6:00, especially since a stiff breeze came up and the sun had transited over the semi-canyon the river was in. When I finally made it to an area I recognized, I was no longer shivering and was getting sluggish and confused. I actually ran out of gas basically within sight of the campsite my family was in. Luckily my dad and oldest brother saw me staggering around a sand bar before falling down and they ran over and more or less carried me to camp. I'd just kind of wandered off to go somewhere maybe 10 minutes away and was gone for 2.5 hours or so. Freaked me out and I've been careful about hiking, camping, and wilderness ever since.

Same thing happened to me in a state park. I came to a fork in the trail, and took what i believed to be the "shorter" way. After a while, I started to think I was lost. Then I was sure I was lost because I should have made it out of the area long ago. Finally I came out in a spot where I recognized the area and knew where I was. I was likely just minutes from making a mistake, going off the trail, and actually getting lost. All because I perceived that it was taking me too long. I had actually just taken the longer route and was never really lost.

I spent a lot of time voluntarily scanning aerial photos for Sam. My opinion is that she fell down the part of the terrain searchers and LE call "too treacherous to search". There is an almost sheer rock wall on the right of the maps where it is wooded at the bottom. I think she fell into a crevasse and it would take people actually going into them to find her. Barring that, someone took her at her car.

Hey I’m only 17 minutes in but want to thank you for not only as usual, all of your research, editing, real world, exploration, and dedication to these topics. But, I think what’s not talked about enough is your sensibility to keep an open mind on things and different possible explanations for why people are going missing in any given situation! even if you tell us that it’s not something you normally would believe in, you treat the idea the victim and everything around it with the upmost respect, in my humble opinion anyway. Last point here is that I think I’ve already said I’m a recovering heroin addict and just got a year clean, but I have had personal friends who have disappeared and never been found again probably thrown under a bridge in Philadelphia after being shot for a drug deal gone wrong or something like that. I was born 8000ft ASL in the Rocky Mountains. I know it's environs. I spent 6 years in the Snoqualmie area and it's totally different. I've seen boulders and tree trunks bigger than pickup trucks moved hundreds of yards after each spring runoff. The terrain changes greatly each spring. I dont think a cache of survival gear or treasure could be counted on to be retrieved easily let alone the body or possessions of someone you have no idea where to begin looking. Incredibly beautiful region but constantly changing.

Some folks seem to have prophetic abilities. I am reminded of Jacob Dibert's dream, so poignantly told in Allison Krauss' song, "Jacob's Dream". In 1856, Dibert had recurring dreams about two missing children and told his family of the details he'd seen in the dream: a dead deer, a fallen tree, and a lost shoe in a ravine. A family member recognized the spot and went there and found the children deceased. They'd crossed a stream and the area had been neglected to search, as no one believed the children could cross the waters. And there's a point there as well: people do the impossible, searches focus on areas of high probability, and so often, the lost are found in areas deemed unlikely or at such a distance covered as to be improbable. Great video, thanks for the work you do.

Great work. It drives home the point to me that when 'Missing 411' style cases emphasize that bodies are located in areas where searchers had already previously searched, that these claims needs to be taken with a large grain of salt. Even with the best of intentions, people have a natural tendency to cut corners and take the path of least resistance. So, looking under a few rocks, in a few hollow trees in a certain area could easily be marked off as 'searched extensively' when you report back to HQ. And if for no other reason than that the searchers on the ground came to the realization that the terrain and foliage meant it was physically impossible to do a search in the area thoroughly but didn't wanted other searchers to feel obliged to go back there and 'do it properly' because of their apparent laziness or incompetence.

Paulides actually contradicts himself on this subject. One of his 'profile points' is that a person is found in a previous searched area, which he protrays as 'weird' or 'mysterious' to his audience, yet the guy will come out and say that sometimes it takes several searches to find something in any particular area. And in some instances, he just outright lies about the searches performed.

You can see why families of missing people can sometimes believe psychics have useful information, even yourself as a skeptic had some hope you might find something. You can also see why it’s so difficult to find missing people in the wilderness, that terrane was brutal.

Your dedication and ability to traverse the places you do amazes me. Having heard Sam Sayers' story before, I was under the impression that she might have wandered off of a nice graded dirt trail. To see an actual area where she may have been hiking was eye opening because I know it takes a certain amount of skill and hiking experience to scrabble through an area or trail like that. Being lost in such a place would suck. Having a GPS and PLB with you... as my son would say, "Respect."

There have been a handful of times when I am walking a familiar trail and all of a sudden my brain registers my surroundings as unfamiliar. It is unsettling and I wonder if others have had the same thing happen to them? That noted, there are places like Joshua tree where buddy system is not optional, even for short line of sight distances.

When I saw this video come up, my stomach sank. I'm a friend of a friend of Sam. My friend was really close with Sam, and unfortunately was across the country studying at college when Sam disappeared. It really affected her and she felt very angry and sad that she couldn't go search in person. Iirc there was a gofundme to help make survival bags to airdrop around the area in case she was lost and might find one. Some people in our class contributed to that or shared the fundraiser. I've heard some people speculate about the boyfriend being involved, but for what it's worth, my friend knew him and seemed to trust him. You never know. Seems more likely to have been an accident. Sam is missed. Her story scared me a lot at the time. I hope some day we find out what happened.

With the unlikelihood she will ever be found, at least she is now a part of the wilderness she loved to spend her time in. I am glad to see the demonstration of good safety gear that nobody should be without in this day and age even on short hikes. So easy to see how someone trying to make their way through that terrain in the dark could have injured themselves. Even in the late afternoon in that area the forest floor can become as dark as night. As we all know, without the ability to call for help, a simple injury that impairs you in the slightest in this kind of terrain is all it takes to go from perfectly fine and confident you will be okay to being just hours from death if not found in time.

Meanwhile, 1 man with 2 first names out here CRUSHING. Spends so much time working on his craft. Spends quality time with us, putting his genuine thoughts on wax for us. The only bad thing about the missing enigma is that it's not able to upload at a high rate. However, 1 high quality & riveting video every other week beats 3 uploads a week on another channel that's essentially copy & pasted work from somewhere else. My favorite aspect to Chris Kyle is that he goes out of his way to do his own research about cases even when he truly doesn't have to. Knowing how skeptical or even downright contemptuous folk can be about this kind of thing, I dont usually comment on 'Psychic' stuff. I do however feel this gentleman may not be far wrong. I have the feeling Sam did make it down that steep way between Big Four Mountain and Perry peak, to come to rest just about between the words 'Sunrise' and Mine' on the map. so just a little bit down from where the gentleman felt his hits . Its worth a look, as Nick says if anyone is ever in that area. If a family could be given closure by finding a missing loved one, then the 'how' it happens, doesnt really matter, right? Great vid by Nick, as usual. He's so invested and professional.
