Guest Podcast Episode?
Something I noticed a long time ago... for a long time, there were no spren in *any* of Dalinar's flashbacks, except for like radiantspren or voidspren. Like, spren wouldn't just 'pop-up' like normal, they were only there if they had something to do with the story. There's a part in the Starfalls where he's in the dark and he thinks, if I could see, I bet I'd see fearspren around this girl, but he never mentions them. Then in Oathbringer they start to pop up, but I wondered before Oathbringer came out if there was a reason for the omission.
First a word of Brandon: Taln didn't break. Then a theory: Shallan is the destroyer for killing her mom who was a herald. She broke, thus starting the desolation.

Is Taln didn't break confirmed? Can you point at the WoB
@wingracer1614

@@juanperret7044 Yes it is confirmed by WoB. I can't post non-youtube links, they just remove my posts but you can google it. It was confirmed by Brandon not long after RoW came out. Taln did not break which means either someone else did (Shallan's mom maybe) or the whole everstorm creation thing was a way to bypass Taln.

So I’m also a massive believer in this theory, and I’d like to point out two things. First, if you look at the Stormlight 5 prologue Brandon released it indicates that a Herald was murdered during Gavilar’s feast. Shallan’s flashback to killing her mother and the flashback to the feast both take place the same amount of years ago according to the headings. Second, the first sentence of the mother killing flashback is literally ‘The world ended, and Shallan was to blame’
Great podcast! So looking forward to this. Just to note, Jezrien wasn’t the king of the Heralds, he was the Herald of Kings (sounds like semantics, but I think there is a difference in what you infer). Prior to becoming a Herald, he was the king of a nation on Ashyn. He then joined the Oathpact and became one of the leaders of the Heralds, but abandoned his role as a king. Jezrien was the tactical leader of the Heralds, while Ishar was the spiritual leader. He stopped wearing the crown because he was no longer a king, whatever nation he ruled was destroyed when they fled Ashyn and his duties were those of a Herald now.
This podcast will be a treasure trove for stormlight veterans. I sure loved the first chapter so much. Can't wait for the next one.
re the spren: I think it makes sense that the spren aren't mentioned as it helps to draw the distinction between knights-radiant and the heralds. I think spren turning into shardblades was a result of them mimicking the herald's honourblades, which do not require a spren; they were a gift from honour. Must admit, i'm a bit hazy on the details so apols if i'm barking up the wrong tree. That does make me wonder, if a herald had bonded a spren...would they have two shardblades (an honour blade and spren blade)?
@MajorReynolds92
Жыл бұрын
i love to see people thinking deeply about this, also i can answer your question :) yes a herald can in fact bond a radiant spren and possess both a living Shardblade and an Honorblade, in fact this is precisely the case with one of the heralds we get to see on screen in particular, dunno how far you are in the story so i'll refrain from spoiling in case you or other viewers haven't reached far enough yet, but suffice to say holding an Honorblade does not prohibit one from also bonding a radiant spren :D
27:20 I think Jamie Lannister was named Warden of the East. The big scandal was that it wasn't being given to Jon Arryn's son, since it was always a title that went to the Lord of the Eyrie, but Cersei had convinced Robert to give it to Jaime because Sweetrobin was... well, Sweetrobin.
Christian, you’re a genius for the purple blood-cremlings-sleepless connection! Genius!
This is truly exactly what I've been craving. I'm very much a surface reader and the deeper plotlines get lost on me. Excited to finally understand what's been happening in the background in this series!
The reread format is so exciting
No shame in not immediately being into Way of Kings! That is a story I feel like I hear from many people, including me! I came to it after reading Mistborn and also ASOIAF, I definitely bounced off. I think the pacing/storytelling is just so different (especially from Mistborn) that I felt overwhelmed and not ready. I also think there are so many mysteries and questions that I felt like I wasn't 'getting it', when in reality that is the point. It's a slow burn. Once I realized (and Jimmy made this point too) that I really just needed to focus on what was in front of me - these amazing characters and their very familiar, human struggles - it really clicked, and fell in love with it. And in fact, I think these are far and away Sanderson's best characters. Great first episode guys - I'm excited for more!
The Heralds' madness being an inverse of their sane selves reminds me of some of the Forsaken from the Wheel of Time.
Couple mins into the discussion and this is bloody brilliant. Love the contrast between Jimmy's exicting energetic cadence and christian's calmer more cozy tone
What!? A Stormlight podcast with Jimmy? Hell yeah!
I have forbidden myslef from touching way of kings for a over a year so i could have a fresh experience, and as badly as i want to reread along with this... i dont think its been long enough Please cultivation, for my boon, make me forget everything about this series so i can start again!

I like to read the physical book first, then on my re-read do audiobook. So it is a fresh way of experiencing it
Super excited for this podcast and all the deep lore dives that you will explore. The fact that spren weren't mentioned in the prelude is fascinating as there is no way that is an oversight by Brandon. There should have been loads around on a battlefield and it would have been easy to slip in a mention of them. I think spren must have still been involved in the creation of Radiants but perhaps there was more of a divide between the physical and cognitive realms making it impossible for most spren to cross over. Perhaps a side effect of the Recreance made it easier for spren to cross. Or perhaps Honors death resulted in more investiture being scattered throughout Roshar and more spren were created, maybe the first non high-sprens.
@Bronimin

Most spren were bonded back then. Most of the free ones around were probably materialised as plate? Some varieties may not have existed either.

The scene takes place in shinovar, which iirc doesn’t have spren floating around
Loving the podcast so far; super looking forward to the next update!
Could random thoughts. Coming to episode 1 late. Holy crap, I actually didn't know that about the Sleepless, cool. I think this prelude sets up all 10, because it not only sets up Odium as an antagonist, it sets up Ishar. Who seems to be the driving force behind the idea to break the oathpact. I kinds feel like Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar is gonna save the Sleepless, because Kaladin is too obvious for Sando. Finally technically we do see Spren. Because the radiant armor is Spren. It's possible too many Spren are taken up by being shardplate, so they have become less abundant.
Theoretically Venli could also be the "liar who wears her scholars mantle over a thief's heart", even though we all know it's Shallan. But Venli does also check all three of those boxes (liar, scholar, thief)

Namely how they thought the prophecies were about Elendi. Then they thought the prophecies didn't use gendered language, so they're about Vin. Then they were like wait, they didn't use gendered language. That rules out everyone but Sazed.

@@nuggetdoja871 essentially Eshonai's destiny/future as a Radiant. I'm rereading Rhythm right now and she actually phrases it that way herself in one of the chapters. Venli weirdly checks all the boxes and is pretty solely responsible for a handful of events in the Last Desolation
Love this! I’m obsessed with digging deeper into the Cosmere and especially The Stormlight Archives!
Safehands played some plot points. They were a safe hiding place because they were inviolate, even if a person was discovered to be discovered as a thief. Safehands also demonstrated the transitions of the female characters. When I was a kid women wore hats to church. All women did it. There was a box of scarves in the foyer, and any woman who did not have a hat or scarf would have to get a used scarf from the box of shame. That tradition was thousands of years old, but I saw it melt away over just a few years. Sanderson is roughly my age, and he may have seen the same thing in his life as a Mormon boy. I related the diminishing emphasis on the safehand as a silly religious idea that melted away quickly. I want to know more about the origins of Vorinism. Safehands are part of that. Perhaps safehands will be revealed down the line when we see the origins and motives of Vorinism.
This one's for the algorithm, thanks for doing this!

I feel like the one who will destroy is szeth because (spoilers for Rythm of War) Szeth is the reason taravangian becomes odium.
Stoked to dig deep with y'all! I've reread them all with every book release. Having read every Sanderson book multiple times, I'm always down for a deep dive into the Cosmere!
Thank you and Jimmy both for starting this. I'm so so SO ready for more!! You guys did a great job being both entertaining and informative in your deep dive of the prelude. Loved the tangent on the sleepless.
I love this idea about the end of book 5 paralleling or inverting the sacrifice of Taln in this prelude. We could see the parallel with Dalinar as the sacrifice or… The inverse, with one character surviving while everyone around them is sacrificed/dies makes me think of a certain someone for whom this is a tragic pattern (Kaladin). It also reminds me of an interesting Death Rattle: “Light grows so distant. The storm never stops. I am broken, and all around me have died. I weep for the end of all things. He has won. Oh, he has beaten us.” These segments foretell the future, and we’ve had 3 Death Rattles that have referred specifically to Kaladin swearing Ideals in each of the books he does, often involving storms and rain.
Super fun!
You blew my mind with that observation about the spren.
Black Ops Cremling would be a great T shirt.

I have a smaller pet theory that Brandon initially intended for the Vorin church to have secret knowledge or be 'up to something'. The Way of Kings gives the impression a few times that they know things about Roshar history, magic, and the cosmere. But that kind of fizzles out. Perhaps the church was going to be led by Ishar? I also wonder if the hierocracy and the sunmaker's actions were initially going to be the influence Autonomy or previous attempts to "unite them"?
This is my new favorite thing on KZread. Forget CWN!!! Love you guys!

Easy nowwwwwww
My thought when it refers to purple blood was that it was from thunderclasts. But the blurb referring to one of the characters destroying everything could refer to Shallan. If we believe the fan theory that Shallan’s killing her mother was the radiant Chanarach, and that either that death or the breaking of her oaths to Testament triggered the Final Desolation, then it makes sense that Shallan’s actions triggered ruin upon all of them. Thanks for a great podcast, Christian. I always look forward to your perspective!

There's a pile of burning cremlings in one of the Dalinar's visions of Aharetiam. I am pretty sure that was a sleeples. This is after his bond with the stormfather where he can control the vision and bring others into it.

9/10 to start out, looking forward to chapter by chapter. I also like juxtaposition with a Megan fan and a normal fan. 17th shard is great, but this brings in a very different perspective. I agree with one of the other comments, I think Sanderson just didn’t mention spren so the reader would focus on just the Oathpact. Also one small correction. By the end, Desolations were happening every couple of years and humanity wasn’t recovering because the Heralds couldn’t hold out anymore.
Very cool, well done!❤ I really love the Brandon Sanderson universe. It is very interesting to listen and understand this👍

Very cool... I get this was the first one and you guys were finding your legs, while also explaining what you intended to do. I look forward to more of these, perhaps with a better structure as you guys work through the first few episodes, so that key ideas, concepts, and theories are flushed out. Also, it would be nice if we can participate in the conversation somehow - perhaps throwing out a question of the week (at the end of an episode) about something to do with the following week's content and then incorporating some of our feedback (maybe even in audio from eventually!) Cheers and good luck on your adventure.
One episode a week is not enough!
Even calling them Bronze Age is misrepresentative, the only reason they have bronze is because it’s being soulcasted en masse and melted down (it’s mentioned during one of dalinar’s visions that it’s too difficult to work iron) Also, there end up being 2 ways that “the enemy” circumvents this compromise: the first being the false desolation, where Ba Ado Mishrim decides to take Rayse’s place. The everstorm and the events of the current books is the second time this has happened. That one line demonstrates the wisdom (and lack thereof) of the heralds.
Immediately starting with something ive never noticed, the violet blood!

I never knew that the Sleepless wrote the blurb. Given that context I think the redeem us/destroy us context is less complete than I used to think since it could be a misdirection for the real destroyers/redeemers since this us can just be the sleepers and then there being a larger hero or destroyer in another plot
Ok, I'm going to be honest, I'm only commenting to drive the algorithm. But that's because this is an awesome podcast and I want it to be profitable for you guys, so you keep making it. Keep up the good work!
You question why there are no spren, how many spren did it say made kaladin's armour when he finally swore the right ideal and forged his? How many radiants were in that charge that dalinar had, all in shardplate, there were way more than there are known sets of plate in the world during his time. Could it be that the spren that manifest are the remains of the plate that has been destroyed since that time? Also they are refered to as shards, honor was shaterred some time after that it seems, more bits of honor = more new spren? It seems likely that different orders use different types of spren to forge their armours, spren atlre attracted to things at times of intense emotions or intense events, like in battle, when they are lilely to need shardplate? also did anyone else notice the magical girl transformation that kaladin got?
So exciting! Time to go full geek mode again 😂❤
30:56 It is Jezrien with a J in their original language (as in that is what Kalak would call him). Although in Alethi it would be pronounced with a Y (like Jasnah).
🎉🎉🎉🎉
"one will destroy us" If Dalinar loses his fight, he than works for Odium....
Maybe we don't hear about the spren because its from the perspective of the heralds? They have been around for thousands of years that they may just barley notice them anymore
The heralds were already at least half mad during aharietiem. I'd assume jezrien stopped wearing his crown due to his own madness, guilt, and knowledge that he was no longer fit to rule.
Mraize is the sleepless watching Shallan....
Does anyone have thoughts on Mackenyu casted as Kaladin Stormblessed?
I finished row like 5 days ago this is what I need, what does everyone suggest I read next I started the cosmere with the way of kings and have also read warbreaker I’m thinking mistborn but am open to suggestions

definitely mistborn, both eras, make sure to read the Secret History novella in between 6 (Bands of Mourning) and 7 (the Lost Metal); there's also Elantris which is Sando's first published novel, and a few others novellas that are super interesting but not necessarily required they just elevate your understanding of the cosmere and how its various magics work, these include The Emperor's Soul, First of the Sun, and Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, oh and also the two stormlight novellas Edgedancer and Dawnshard if you haven't already devoured those
tried multiple times over multiple years to pick up TWOK, I used to liken it to reading the bible at first. I never reread books but I immediately ran it back after the first and second read throughs
how often are these podcasts going to be? one every week? maybe a boxed set with some slow chapters? there is little to no chance we would catch up with book 5 but still.. I do think that some chapters could be squished together for keeping the podcast engaging!

I have a weird theory on Kaladan as the destroyer and Shelan as the redeemer. Kaladan would put living with honor above a destructive outcome, as he lives under his oath of journey before destination. For Shelan as the redeemer, is there foreshadowing in uniting, as in unite them all? Shelan has a lifetime of uniting her personalities. Hoid takes special interest in Shelan all the way back to her childhood. Even the spren are willing to give her second shot with a new spren, indicating her importance. Will she be critical in uniting Adalnasium's shards, which may take back the magic from the worlds as it consolidates back to the one being?
