Lost in Irvingland: The Reluctant Stowaway - Lost In Space Season 1 Episode 1

The Robinson family and their pilot, Major Don West, are in suspended animation tubes, ready to begin their 5 1/2 year journey in the Jupiter 2, to begin establishing a human colony on a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri. But flight surgeon Dr. Smith has sold out to a foreign power and is in the process of sabotaging the ship. He's too slow and finds himself trapped on the ship as it takes off. His extra weight throws the ship's trajectory off and it becomes lost in space. Irving begins his retrospective of one of the most memorable science fictions shows ever.

The early episodes in black and white were done very serious and realistic. When they switched to color the episodes became outrageous and unbeliveable.

Not to diminish his later work, (for which he is MUCH more famous), but it is my personal opinion that his work for LIS was his greatest work! Great pieces that NEVER got old to hear! Amazingly, he also created them in a way so that different sections of different pieces could be spliced together perfectly! And he only composed for 2 or 3 episodes! It was reused through the entire show’s run! Hands down, the best soundtrack for a TV show EVER!!!

Williams scored ep1 Reluctant Stowaway, Ep 3 Island in the Sky, Ep 5 The Hungry Sea, and ep7 My Friend, Mr Nobody. Herman Stein scored the Derelict, and added new music for There were Giants in the Earth, (mixed in with previous Williams music), and Welcome Stranger! Everything after that was reusing the previous scores! New music in season 2, including Alexander Courage from Star Trek fame, and new composers in season 3. To me, none of those compare to the works of Williams and Stein!!

Smith's turn to coward came from an in-universe and real life reason. Real life JOnathon Harris knew he was going to be killed off, so he started hamming it up and Smith was reborn. In-universe, the old LIS Technical manual said the J2 lift off was at full power 100%. Any person not in the protective freezing tubes would suffer eventual mental health damage from the lift off. Hence Smith's scream at lift off. The manual stated that any lift off that the crew was not in the freezing tubes would consist of full power only being at 80%

It was rather amazing, in the 1st episode, that they gave Maureen the daring and gutsy job of going out in space to rescue John. I always felt it was a shame they didn’t give her more to do later on, instead they turned her into June Cleaver washing clothes and cooking meals! She was supposed to be a Doctor, herself!!

Create a story arc of Don and Judy having a real relationship? “Eeeewww, boys wouldn’t like that! They might actually kiss or something gross”!! Maureen was a Doctor, (of biology, I think), did she get to use it, or even to be a Mama bear and defend the family if the men were away? Not really.....That would get in the way of her cooking and doing the laundry! (Sigh, this was the mid 60’s)! Penny supposedly had an IQ of 165! Did she ever act like she did? Nooo! And poor Judy never got a chance to display her skills at musical comedy!!!

Maybe I'm mistaken but I always assumed that the guard that Smith knocked out and pushed down the garbage chute went into a dumpster somewhere on the ground near the ship itself. Maybe if Smith hadn't panicked, he might have thought to send himself down that same garbage chute to escape since he was trapped inside the Jupiter 2.

I loved the show and this episode but really nothing was right in this .... The waste chute would have needed an airtight inner and outer chute controlled from inside ..... The guard wouldn't have slid into a dumpster but instead after opening the outer chute he would have fallen a 2 story drop into a dumpster and that would have solved the mystery as to whether or not the guard survived ...... Dr. Smith could have attempted to open the upper main hatch manually ..... Why would he or Aolis 14 Umbra not know that the robot power is shut down before launch? ...... Why not just pull out the power pack if the Robinsons have no idea as to how it works? ..... Why does Dr. Smith need to suspiciously sneak down to the lower level only to come off as a top brass making an inspection? ..... Why would a top brass colonel be responsible for adjusting the helium nitrogen ratio instead of a maintenance crew or automatically adjusted by computer and if that was part of his job, why would he not know what deck it's on? ..... Why is John Robinson elected to be the leader when he can't even answer the General as to being ready without first consulting his wife who can't even answer with a simple "Yes"? ....... Major West who is the military pilot has to explain everything to him from the vector tapes to the UPS scanner ....... Why is Colonel Smith not in charge being that he hasn't even been convicted of suspicion of treason yet? ........ Major West says "I know you ...... You're that sneaky underhanded Colonel who I've had to take orders from for years but ...... NO MORE ..... and keep your mouth shut ..... In fact, we're not even gonna call you Colonel anymore ....... DOCTOR ..... SMITH !!!!! ...... Obviously Don didn't appreciate the fact that Colonel Smith was also a vital part of the emergency plan to revive him in case the unlikely event that something should go wrong so that everyone would know that they're in trouble because he is driving.

The best musical soundtrack for ANY TV show, in my opinion!! I sincerely believe this show would never have been as popular and successful without this music!! The amazing thing is that is was able to be reused and recycled over the next 3 years without it ever getting dull or repetitive!!!

I’m really enjoying your commentaries. Jealous that you saw these shows in their original broadcasts. I discovered LIS as a very small boy during the early TV syndication reruns. It came on every weekday evening at 5:00 or 6:00. We had a black and white TV with a big dial that made an audible “clunk!” as you changed channels. I was so small I did not have the strength to move the dial, so I was to a degree at the mercy of my older brother’s whims. I can still hear my mother say to him “let your little brother watch the show with the robot”. I didn’t know how to read yet, so I could not read the title card. To me it was just “the show with the robot”.

Our first color TV had a feature I haven't seen since. The big dial was programmable. On the back of it there were little slide tabs, like you might find for setting an analog timer. Set those on the channels you want - the 3 that were available - and the front of the TV had "forward" and "backward" buttons. Push one and the dial would turn to the next programmed stop. Not exactly a remote, but sort of the next best thing. If somebody was hogging the TV and it was time for the Flintstones, I just rushed over and pushed the button. Never got challenged, so apparently those buttons were named "checkmate"!

There's a bright glow around the Jupiter 2 and a high pitch sizzling sound within the spaceship just before he let out that scream. There's is some Lost in Space fan website explaining the Jupiter 2 had an Anti- Gravity Drive, which in turned causing the glow around the spaceship at lift off and not effect the Robinson Family and Major West while they were in a state of suspended animation. Dr. Smith's launch into space wasn't a pleasant one.

Sadly, they backed up on this, because the producer wanted it to be aimed for young boys who didn’t want any mushy kissing and romance in their show! Even between the married John and Maureen!! It would have been cool to have had some Don and Judy episodes, or John and Maureen episodes where they had to work together. Even some Will and Penny episodes where they had to work together and gain respect for each other! But that’s coming from my adult mind now, not from my adolescent mind then! It has often been said that Smith was supposed to be killed off early on, but I can’t imagine that. This was such a “family-friendly” show that death was very rare, (except for animal monsters)! They would never use the word “kill” or “murder”, (the term was always “DESTROY”)! The only exception was the IDAK Android, (Crush, Kill, Destroy)!!! I now see where they had one chance: during “Invaders From the Fifth Dimension”. When the Aliens released Will, they could have taken Smith, saying, “Oh well, you will have to do”! This way, he would not be killed; simply taken away. At the end of that one, I had a hard time believing that the Robinsons would EVER allow Smith near the kids again! Oh well, really can’t imagine where the show could have gone from there. Smith had become the major antagonist, and literally set up every peril in the rest of the series!

@@dwashbur Yes, to be realistic, no intelligent, caring parent would want their kids to hang out with Smith. Since John Robinson was supposed to be the epitome of the intelligent, caring parent, it created quite a contradiction, or paradox! I have this fantasy, I’m gonna pester one of these guys who do the CGI recreations. We need “101 ways to Kill Smith”! At least 10 kills by Don: putting Smith in the airlock and ejecting him into space! Running over him with the Chariot! Throwing him into the power core and seeing a brownish “fart” come out of the engines, Smith gets on the elevator, Don pushes a button, and Smith drops out the bottom of the ship like the Space Pod!! A whole set of John just shooting Smith with a laser after putting the kids in danger!!! Smith encountering the giant Cyclops and being grabbed up and bitten in half! Every Smith “experiment” or special project blowing up in Smith’s face! Every single time a monster appeared, and Smith grabbed and held Will as a human shield, the “monster” gently and gingerly frees and moves Will to the side, then proceeds to brutally kill Smith...etc!!! With every death including one of Smiths insane screams!!! Lol!!! I’m sick because I’m laughing my ass off just imagining this!!!

So, just to add more fuel to the fire, I agree with you wholeheartedly about all the scientific and technical info being TOTALLY screwed up! In the pilot “Nowhere to Hide”, they said the ship was traveling near the speed of light, yet would take a hundred years to get to Alpha Centauri, (4.6 light years away). They crashed after 3 and a half years, yet Will speculated they might be on Mars!!! THEN, in the revised “Reluctant Stowaway”, they said the trip would take 5 years, but they went into a “hyperdrive” for 3-5 minutes, and suddenly have exited our galaxy?? As you said, why didn’t they use hyperdrive to get to AC in one day, or less? I guess the easy answer is back in these days, you had to be an actual astronomer or research the facts at a library!! We didn’t have Google or Wikipedia to look up facts back then. It was said that NASA actually wanted to be consultants for this show, but soon found out that no one involved with the show was interested with facts!! It didn’t fit their storyline!!! NASA gave up and quit!!!

It's about physics, not propulsion. Newton's first law says an object in motion tends to stay in motion and in the same direction unless acted on by an outside force. The Jupiter 2's trajectory was calculated precisely and with Newton's law in mind. The extra weight causes a change in momentum because it will now take more outside force to act on the motion, i.e. it takes more to steer the ship, and that hasn't been accounted for. It's all mathematical and crap that's beyond me, but I do understand that much: the extra weight means the thrust etc. that they calculated is wrong now, and that's what threw them off course and into the meteor swarm.

@@dwashbur What I meant was, all that is only a problem for ships which are only carrying a certain amount of fuel. Combustible fuel has to be carried in some other form (liquid, usually), so it can be burned. To make the trip as efficient as possible, it is desirable to carry as little fuel as possible; so using it as little as possible is preferred. This means calculating very carefully to use gravitational attraction of large bodies as much as possible. Changing the mass even a little throws off the trajectories. But with the "atomic power," the fuel supply is relatively inexhaustible, and has a fixed mass (supposing the water, if any, is condensed and recirculated). So they can just plot the most convenient trajectory and go, regardless of small changes in on-board mass. The engines could run all the time. An imperfect analogy is to a jet airliner, which has certain calculations involved in its flight, but is not thrown off by whether one passenger does not show up. However, since the details of the propulsion are not the point of the show, it's only speculation either way. :)

  • @dwashbur

A valid point, but it would require the onboard computer/guidance system/pinball machine to be programmed for what to do in the event of a change in mass. I get the feeling nobody remembered to do that. But as you said, propulsion was so not the point so we're both blowing smoke :)

Judy was always so beautiful. Such a shame they didn’t use her more. She was another wasted character. This is the main thing that aggravates me about this show. Every member of the cast should have been featured in their own episodes now and then. John had quite a few in the first season, but got pushed into the background later. Don never really had a featured episode until S3, and both times he was teamed up with Smith, (the Space Fugitives and Space Primevals). Maureen never had a meaning episode of her own. Even the episodes where the men were away, she was always stuck with Smith and played the exasperated housewife while he caused trouble. Judy had Attack of the Monster Plants, and was featured in One of Our Dogs is Missing as the object of desire for a weird quicksand gorilla! Then we had the awful S3 Space Beautify. Penny probably did the best of those outside the Golden Trinity of Smith, Will, and the Robot. Her episodes were VERY GOOD, and she showed herself a great actress when they gave her the material. S1’s Mr Nobody and Magic Mirror come off as extremely sincere and heartfelt! She was featured in some S2 and 3 episodes, but these were too stupid and silly to enjoy, although Angela Cartwright did her best, the material was just too awful!

Irwin Allen from what I have read was busy with many projects at the time. So the tone of Lost In Space varies a lot, even within a single season. Even as a kid I did not care for Dr Smith’s character although I know many people love him. Again, problems with consistency of tone. The Robinson family and Don were, for the most part, playing it straight as a sci fi adventure in outer space. Jonathan Harris seemed to be performing in an entirely different show from everyone else - some sort of burlesque comedy. That never really worked for me, but I know many others enjoy it.
