Been on boats all my life. If you even *think* you might hit another boat you blow your horn 5 times. Glad this didn’t end up being an accident.

Ed & Lynn good job not panicking in a stressful situation. As a professional Mariner with 30 years at sea one item we always do coming into port is to clear the anchor and have it ready to release immediately. I’m can’t say having it out earlier would have helped, but when you had trusted to the stbd side of the channel I was screaming at my phone drop the anchor. The drinks at the end were well deserved.

Fortunately, I dropped it just in time to stop us from hitting that yacht. At first I was worried that dropping it too soon might put me in jeopardy of hitting the first yacht i passed. We definitely had a few drinks that night!

I know. With everything going on I completely forgot to blow the horn. I did announce the situation on channel 16 though.

I think it is great how calm you stayed. Not easy to do. You might want to consider a overhaul on your engine rooms. Old boats start having strange problems and it gets frustrating. Overhauling (trans, engine, system, exhaust, controls, electric, etc) is expensive, but you will enjoy your time on the boat with piece of mind.

Thank you for videoing your loss of control issue so that we may see your actions real time. Both of you remained amazingly calm which likely aided in rational thinking. We have an acquaintance with a Nordhavn 55 who was backing out of his slip using his handheld remote when the battery died in the remote. He was unable to get out of reverse and backed into the boat and dock behind him. Not pretty.

When I worked in commercial maritime as soon as we passed the channel buoy, we set an anchor watch. In the event we lost steerage or power someone would drop anchor. As soon as you lost power I was saying drop "drop anchor, drop anchor". Glad you guys were able to avoid hitting anything. That drink at the end was well deserved.

@@MarketingStrategies28engin was running. The battery for the electronic control was believed to be dead. The alarm circuit was sounding on the lower pilot station. They definitely had power to sound the horn.

There are definitely things I could have done differently, but in the moment, that is what we did and I show it unvarnished. In the end, it never mattered. The anchor stopped us before we hit the mega yacht. Sometimes you get lucky.

Nerve racking. Lyn did a good job and you both certainly earned your cocktails that day. I have a similar vintage Hatteras with only cables to the transmissions (no electronics). I haven't had one jam ever but please let us know what you find out and then I will double check mine. Had a similar incident in Norfolk but a mega yacht next to us at the dock lost its bow line in a high wind and the bow decided to slide over and visit us. Lots of fenders, no damage and the captain got the bow thruster working after a few minutes and put her back on the dock. Those seem to be the primary options in that situation- bow thruster, anchor and deploy lots of fenders.

I was thinking how I would have handled it and as always it's best to think about a problem before it's a problem for real on my own boat. Glad all turned out well. I’d love to see you post a follow up about what went right and what you’d do differently. My heart was pounding during that event, you did a masterful job remaining g calm. I’m also running electronic controls and this is my biggest fear on my boat. I’ve practiced this scenario in my head and my initial plan was like yours kick the anchor overboard. Now after watching this I’m adding to the plan several short blasts of the horn to get as much attention as possible focused on me. A pan pan or mayday on 16 to engage any on water help faster. Any landing you can walk away from is a successful landing.

We have a 1981 Hatteras bought in 1993. In 2015 we overhauled the engines, transmissions, steering and electronics. Problems have gone away 100%. Put a new generator in 2021. These are solid boats specially the Detroit Diesel engines.

Those guys on the mega yacht could have been nicer- It was an accident and nothing got damaged.. Love watching you guys, stay safe and keep living life to the fullest!

Drink well deserved after that! My heart was pounding for you guys as i watched! I think its crazy how the Boat US guy makes you call and deal with coverage while you're in the middle of an unstable situation, i don't understand why he didn't get you moored up against that long wall to starboard and then worry about all of that. I guess in the end it worked out but from our view at the bow it was just untimely in my opinion. Great work making a quick fix captain and even bigger kudos to Lynn as she held her cool and did everything she could in the situation as well! Gotta love boating sometimes! :)

We drank heavily! We came within a foot of that yacht. Good thing Ed had me drop the anchor when he did!

We had a similar experience entering Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island. The seas getting there were rough and we had some sediment get stirred up in our fuel tank, blocking the fuel intake and stalling our engine. We were able to hook a mooring that passed close by, otherwise, we would have dropped anchor. The harbormaster was then able to tow us to the mooring we reserved and we were able to clear the fuel line and continue on. Good call on dropping the anchor and staying calm! One of those 1% sheer terror moments of cruising!

Wow that dual Roger Out at 6:06 was just super! One of your best! And what an episode, another mechanical - crazy! This one was potentially dangerous… not just inconvenient, yikes, that was nerve wracking to watch! Perfect ending scene with a cocktail after it was over - whew!

I think the decision to go down below to look at your transmission control system was a good idea, since there was nothing you could really do topside that Lynn wasn't already doing. I too am learning that boat life is a never ending journey of learning. Today luck was on your side, nobody was hurt and no vessels were harmed in the making of this video.

I watched the incident a second time In case I missed something. However, it was not there. The reliance on purely electronic communication means was obviously not working. YET, I never heard the ship's horn sound to signal an emergency that would have been heard throughout the Marina....including the Superyacht in your path!!!!!

Before entering any marina while I have room to maneuver I bring the engine to neutral and then check reverse and also check both my bow and stern thrusters. Transmission linkages can come loose after hours of running while the boat is in forward. Sometimes it may seem to be inconvenient to come to a stop and do this but it’ll save you one day. Great job dropping the anchor.

That's the thing. I had just traveled a mile from the inlet to the marina, shifting in and out of gear all along the way. In fact, it actually happened when I was coming to a stop outside the marina so I could hail them. But my momentum and the river current pushed me in.

The myth that boating is all about motoring along enjoying the water is exploded once again. Had sailboats for years, but although I often feel the pull of the water and boating, I don’t miss the additional set of responsibilities. My friends enjoyed the beer and pizza bribes on workdays though😎

Many years ago I survived a hurricane on Euluthra at The Duck Inn with JJ. The Inn is probably the safest structure on the Island. The locals are very Awesome people. My favorite getaway.
