Lost Cinemas in Singapore

A throwback into the old-school cinema and theatre scene and arthitecture - a nice blend of sentimental atmosphere. There used to have an interval in between; smokers take their breather while the kachang putih man would walk along the isle to the call of several waving hands. My last experience in these old musky smell cinema was Kok Wah to watch Clash of the Titans in 1984. It was nostalgic.

😮🙏 Brought back glimpses of so many flashes of old memories of the 1990s Singapore ... OMG! 1990s were about 34 years ago in year 2024! Still remembered the Embro backpacks , Casio digital watches , Tamiya Speed-Trax motorized model car racers that school kids played at some HDB void-deck corners , Sony Walkmans , MRT Trains , Trans-Island & SBS Buses' Station / bus-stopping purple-lighted Chimes , Wisma Atria near Orchard MRT Station still has their basement Aquarium with mini Sharks , HMV , Borders , Long John Silver , A&W , The old Funan Centre , Gramophone CD / Video shops , Art Friends & CD Rama outlets , Esprit shops , POSB Bank branches , Orchard Road Glutton Street , 8Days in paper forms , Calvin Klein parfumes , Crumpler pouches , comfortable Toyota Crown taxis , Doctor Martin boots , Employees Oriented HR in most companies , Old Jurong BirdPark , Pager , Ericsson , Nokia , Siemens , Motorola brick phones ... & the many family members , school mates & colleagues that had left us since ... 🙏 Thank You So Much for bringing back some of the old 1990s Singapore treasured memories ... 🙏🌷🌿🌍✌💜🕊🇸🇬🇲🇾

Bring back sweet memories when i was a child. Thanks for these memories. I remembered Jalan Sayur Central cinema around Eunos area as a child. My late parents used to bring us to watch movies there. The cost of tickets was only 25 cents for adults and children of certain age free. When it rained the cinema was flooded and people used to smoke in the cinema as well. 😊

There were also make-shift open air cinemas in some kampongs that charged 10 cent admission ticket. Popularly known as wayang sepuluh sen, it operated only in the evenings with free seating on long wooden benches where one would have to rush for the coveted seats once the gate was opened. When it rained unless you had an umbrella you’d be drenched, yet no complaints for the price you paid. Wonderful memories of life in Singapore then. Anyone ever watched a movie in wayang sepuluh sen?

Yes I remember when they had one in my kampong Lorong Berhala. Those who paid could sit just below the canvas. The 'free tickets' would sit quite far away and they actually soften the sound so that the ones nearer would enjoy the movie

My good memories of yesteryear when there's not much of entertainment places to go. Cinemas were hot places & tickets were sold out whenever a popular movie was screened.. Roxy was known for black market tickets. A gang in control would buy the front row tickets at 50cent & sold to patrons for $1. One other incident I could clearly remember was the Palace Theatre. The days when back-combed beehive hair was the style. A guy seated behind a lady was annoyed with her hair blocking his view, poked matchsticks into it. Smoking was allowed & to own a cigarette lighter was a luxury.

Thanks for the vivid memories bro Beng Choo. Sometimes the gang would buy and sold slightly higher, especially when the movie was a blockbuster. Yes, movie was the only entertaiment we had. We were very happy people in those days.

Among the cinema goers were crooks who molested females by inserting their fingers through the gaps between the seats and backrests. It was also common to see huge rats scurrying along the floor. 😆😄😆

At 8:02 should be Republic theatre, not Regal. It was located in Marine Parade Rd where I’m still living since I was 7. Besides, Galaxy theatre at 2:21 used to be a small cinema sandwiched between the shophouses along Onan Rd in Geylang Serai area. The stretch was demolished around 1981-1982 for modern development which currently houses the Muslim Convert Association. Also, the movie poster that is shown, Singham Return was an Ajay Devgan hindi blockbuster released in 2014. Hence, the information is incorrect. Finally, as a child who regularly went to the Galaxy cinema with my grandparents, that theatre building is indeed a mistake. It looks more like the Rex theatre at Mackenzie Rd where they predominantly screen tamil and hindi films.
