Lost Art of Literature: In a World of Instant Gratification | William Brittain | TEDxFranklin

“Great literature has the power to transform our hearts and minds, but we often don’t take time for it.” Franklin Classical School junior William Brittain recalls his reluctance to start his summer reading assignment, the 1,300 page epic novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. By committing to the challenge William learned more than he expected about the value of great literature and hopes to encourage others to make time for timeless things. William Brittain has been living in Tennessee for the past six years and is a student at Franklin Classical High School. As a member of the class of 2023, he enjoys playing soccer, football, and acting. This spring, he is starring in Franklin Classical School’s theatrical production of Les Misérables as Jean Valjean. The performances will take place at the Williamson County Performing Arts Center from April 21st through April 23rd. He aspires to become a doctor and help those in need. “Great literature has the power to transform our hearts and minds, but we often don’t make time for it.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. my primary, secondary and tertiary schooling was happily spent browsing the schools' libraries, getting lost in all kinds of books - from adventure, mystery-suspense, fantasy, references, science books, classics, spiritual, personality development, diys, etc. - learnings and influences that helps me out through my life.

Although most of the population read less than they used to, the demographic of fanfiction readers are incredibly active. It gets a bad rep, but not only are there adults and teens writing amazing 30-100k+ word stories, the 12 year olds writing cringe stories will improve drastically, and often perform better in school English lessons as a result. None of this is published and a lot is on non-profit websites, but that doesn't make it any more or less valuable than published novels.
