The key to LOST's time travel at this point is "Whatever Happened, Happened." If Jin was back in time to stop Danielle from entering the temple here, he ALWAYS was there. There was never a time he didn't stop her. Locke always told Richard about his birth, and that's why he found him as a kid. He ALWAYS did that. Danielle not remembering Jin can be chalked up to only knowing him for about an hour or so, and right in the middle of a crazy traumatic experience. Plus she went crazy for 16 years where her only focus was Alex. In reality, it's because the writers hadn't planned that yet. But I think they can get away with it due to her being crazy. The only exception that we know of is Desmond. He is special because of the Hatch explosion. As we have learned from his flashes of Charlie's Death, and his jumping through time in The Constant. Daniel telling Desmond that info on the island was new. But ONLY because Desmond is special. So it came to him suddenly in the correlating time for Desmond.

Did Danielle had a interaction with Jin though? I think they didn't even met after these events. When she came to steal Claire's baby he was on the raft and when she was leading the group to the radio tower Jin was at the beach with Bernard and Sayid. I think the only plot hole in the "time travel arc" is Ben and Sayid/Sawyer, pointed by Hurley further in the show.

There is an element of the universe course correcting. In the biggest perspective even without jacob, people medling with the island course corrects the passengers to crash. So even if Richmond didnt know about locke the first time round, he would be born, end up on the plane and travel back to tell Richmond about himself. The second time round Richmond now knows of him but nothing changes. Just as it is explained to Daniel that even if you change things key points will still happen. Like Richmond now knows about locke but events will course correct key points like the compass. This is also the focus of the next episode. The oceanic 6 leaving is like Desmond trying to stay with penny in the past and they must replicate the key points of course correction to return. It's why despite ben trying so hard to get everyone together if you watch closely everyone is already being gathered in L.A. without anyone realising it. Ben keeps saying it keeps messing up when he tries to manipulate. Like hurley getting arrested. Then to really mess with us they also drop that Locke was meant to move the island and jump to the future and gather everyone. But because Ben takes his place he ends up jumping at a different window and we lose people as a result.

The reason Charlotte Just "remembered" Daniel was because she was actually going through the same thing Desmond was on the Boat. That's why she started saying things that didn't make sense. She was in the past.

It’s the bootstrap paradox, it’s a endless time loop, what ever happened always happened. Like when Faraday told Charlotte when she was little, or when Jin told Danielle not to go in that hole, that always happened it’s what influenced these current events to induce the inciting event over and over again in an endless loop

As for the time travel stuff in lost. It operates very very firmly on the if we go to the past it becomes our present. And the future from that point in time is actually our past. The reason that Desmond remembers the way that he does is because of everyone in the series his mind is removed from time because of releasing the dam back in the end of season 2.

  • @DigiCount

The principle is called the Stable Time Loop. Generally it refers to an event that is motivated by the actions of a time traveler or other temporal anomaly, that anomaly itself being motivated by the event to begin with. Rather than being a change to some hypothetical "original" time line, the anomaly is always considered part of the causal chain. In the case of John, the reason why Richard visited him was always because he met an older version of that same guy in the 50s who pointed him in the direction of a kid named John Locke, who then goes on to seek out Richard as a grown man in his future.

In the pilot episodes Walt hears the monster and thinks it's Vincent. Rose says the noise was familiar, that she was from the Bronx. Charlie thought it was just monkeys. One monster sound can be heard as Locke's calculator printer at his job in his first flashback. The monster flashed Eko's memories and read his life. Maybe it reflects the memories of people. Kate's horse, Hurley's Dave, Sayid's cat, all functions of the Island. Ben knew everything about Charlotte, her family, her education, everything, and told Locke to stop him from shooting him to let Locke know a spy was on the boat. He knew everything about Keamy. Of course he knows about the boat people. Michael gave him the names and Mikhail probably put together some files, like he said he would about the plane survivors. Did he know Eloise was Daniel's mother? Maybe, maybe not. I forgot childhood friend's names and faces of people I knew from years ago. Rousseau wouldn't think or assume the Asian man from 815 was the SAME Asian man Jin from 16 years before with whom they spent a half hour. How would that be possible for her? Was she gonna say they looked alike? She went nuts anyway.

One of the problems with keeping track of things in time travel stories is that one person's past and future can be out of sync with everybody else's past and future. For example, I hop into a time machine today and go back twenty years and tell you the ending of Lost before the show even airs (not intentionally, of course, I got drunk). Ten years after that you see me on the street and yell, "hey! You're that drunken asshole who spoiled the ending of Lost for me!" I, of course would be confused and deny your accusation (and even having ever met you) because my time travel trip is still ten years in the future. Your past is still in my future.

Nah you guys explaining it wrong. In lost its a time loop. Whatever happened, happened. For example Charlotte - she left the island because Faraday said she should leave and never come back or she will die. That always happened. Desmond is special, his memory works outside of the loop because he spend so much time next to that magnetic field and blast from s2. But imo Faraday always was meant to leave that message. Its just that Desmond memory works differently so he remembered it "later".

LOST season 5 answers guide: 1. Danielle thought Jin was "infected" too because he disapeared, that's why she didn't remembered him from the past. Anyway I don't even know if they ever had a scene face-to-face in the present. 2. The reason the people are mentioned as infected and how that manifests itself is shown and better explained in season 6 where we meet another lost character from previous seasons who was also infected by the smoke monster. 3. If I'm correct then the order of exposure to the island would be: Charlote>Miles>Juliett>Sawyer=Locke>Daniel. 4. I think this season shows why Ben manipulated the people off the island, because he wanted to have again power when he would have come to the island. 5. The well was near the place Ben blew up in season 4 finale. 6. Actually (and this season when it comes full circle will prove this) Christian manipulated John to have Ben move the island and then to have John being forced to turn the wheel again and get off the island which would get him in the hands of Ben who would later kill him and thus creating the "Loophole" he needed for so long. What a fantastic episode this was, with soo many question answered and raised at the same time.

The time travel stuff gets explained. It's just a circle of action. You can only make choices in your present timeline, but if your present ends up in the past then everything you decide to do is always what had happened, but your choices still matter because it's all relative. They do a whole thing about it. It's time travel so it can only make so much sense. It's a whole thing but I love it. Hahaha.

  • @chrisf5828
    @chrisf58284 жыл бұрын

There is no grandfather paradox in LOST. Whatever happened, happened. If you make changes in the past they do not change anything because your actions already happened. You grew up in a world where those changes had already had whatever effect they had. Say you went back in time to attend high school in 1970. In 2019 your picture is in that 1970 year book, but it didn't appear there. It was always there. If you looked in that yearbook when you were a child you were already in it. It is the history if 1970 that you attended that school and that has always been the history of 1970. But what if you DID go back tomorrow to change something in the past? You didn't. You can't. You won't. You might try but whatever you do will turn out to already be the history of what happened. That is how time works on LOST.

Here's my issue with Suraj in this episode. 2:59 Here's some mansplanation again. But this time, it wasn't blurted out "unapologetically" as he did "apologize" about saying something they might already know or have picked up. But that "apology" did come AFTER THE FACT... after his mansplanation. While it wasn't a spoiler, it's structurally similar to saying, "blah, blah, blah, I'm sorry if that was a spoiler." But I guess that's the extent of any evolution on his part. He'll still fulfill his need to mansplain stuff but now he'll apologize for it after. Now this is not that egregious in that IF he simply said something they already knew, then he didn't necessarily spoil anything. He just robbed them of the opportunity to connect dots aloud on film, things that reactors across all the KZread space seem to take pride in (and receive accolades for in the comment sections). It was like that moment when Rana reacted to Desmond's "I think I crashed your plane" moment. What if it took her a minute to process that? Would she have had the chance to REACT on screen or would he have blurted out the connection in that's stead? In general, if dots hadn't been connected (YET), he's guiding them on their voyage (their MAIDEN voyage), and there's a bit of pretension and condescension behind that practice. I tune into reaction channels for reactions. If I wanted to witness mansplanations, I'd tune into review channels. 3:29 This is interesting. And it's not a run-of-the-mill sin to question why Danielle had no memory of meeting Jin. But I don't think he should've introduced this tidbit into their consciousness. Yes, Nikki seemed to have picked it up on her own, but that issue turned out to be among the sources of her confusion. Why not let her/them bring up that issue. When given the choice between letting them process something vs. involving himself in their process, why does he always go with the latter? Sure, many people during their real-time viewing did indeed wonder why Danielle had no memory of Jin. But if these ladies didn't, why not let that go? Especially because we all sussed out the ACTUAL "4th wall" reason after processing the series in its entirety. And there is a certain consistency to the time travel "basics" apart from the problems of "new memories"/"lack of memories". It's harder to process it when the problematic aspects are brought to the fore so, why not let them grasp the basics and THEN address the problematic details? 6:57 This music box explanation is the rare type of intervention that he should be doing as the resident veteran viewer. It was a FINAL callback that was on the tip of a newbie-viewer's tongue and she was asking to be reminded of that inconsequential tidbit. 7:25 And here's where he once again uses poor judgment in letting his desire to mansplain override potentially spoiling something. In his mansplanation about the function of the smoke monster he says, "it's where [Danielle] got that phrasing... she called that a type of security." But here's the thing: [potential SPOILER FOR THE REMAINDER OF THIS PARAGRAPH]. At this point in the story, how do we know the smoke monster is not a security system? We saw Ben summon it to vanquish his enemies. That sure sounds like one function of a security system. If anything, the revelation of that scene for viewers in real time should've been, "Oh, that's how Danielle KNEW it was a security system." What Suraj had done was share something he had processed about that scene after his having watched the ENTIRE SEASON. Without thinking, he allowed knowledge that had been informed by his sensibilities from having watched and processed the series multiple times to be passed on before a real time viewer was supposed to know it... all because he had to mansplain. Most veteran viewers take the better-safe-than sorry approach to decisions to intervene. Suraj seems to embrace, better to intervene than be safe... and then he can say he's sorry... as long as he can mansplain. 10:02 Nikki asking him this question about Vincent is not an indictment of Suraj as he handled it as well as could be, but it demonstrates the different way the ladies watch the show in his presence. Sure, she could've wondered the same thing aloud to Rana, but that would've resulted in a speculative discussion. Instead, they (particularly Nikki) will expect direct answers or look for tells in his expression or response. It becomes a substitute for thinking for themselves. Now, when it was just "Nikki Reacts," that dynamic worked (for some). But as evidenced by the episodes where the girls flew unaccompanied, they watch the show differently when he's not there and seem to grasp the storyline more readily. 17:28 This was good intervention. He corrected the record about Ben vs. Locke's responsibility and he did so in a fun way. 17:45 This was not. While some real time viewers may have connected the dots regarding the identity of Eloise Hawking, not all did. But they all eventually figured that out (obviously) WITHOUT SOMEONE MANSPLAINING IT TO THEM. Before most other veteran viewers chime in, they process the potential contribution through the guard rails of processing (i) whether they themselves knew and/or should have known this in real time and (ii) whether the writers would later clarify it in the storyline. Suraj just blurts it out because apparently, it's better to mansplain something ASAP than risk them figuring it out on their own or having the writing address the issue later. And then he can apologize about it and laugh off the potential backlash. I get that I'm in the minority. I get that the bulk of subscribers subscribe to channels because they're fans of the players. I get that fans will be more forgiving of transgressions by people they liked ahead of time. I also get that many enjoy reaction channels for the winking and nodding aspects of the omniscient viewers, whether it's by a veteran viewer on the channel or the community "show experts" in the comment section. But that's not why I watch and subscribe to reaction channels. I watch because I like seeing the variety of different reactions by new viewers and I anticipate the universal reactions of these viewers to the big scenes. But I like my reactions genuine, real, and pure. And given the choice between reactors mistakenly having outlandish theories about the show and the veteran viewer mistakenly spoiling something that the writers had addressed later, I prefer the former... because it's genuine, real, and pure.

There are a number of discrepancies between the revealed history of the science expedition and Danielle's account of the same as told sixteen years later to Sayid and Hurley. Likely this is the result of the trauma that occured around the death of her team and her long isolation on the island. (Solitary, Numbers, Exodus)

The problem with Suraj is he isn't capable of making them understand of something that's already been established. It's so simple, and though he claims he's been a fan of this show, he's missed a lot of things despite all the rewatches. Plus, he tells them plot points sooner. Let them figure out. I'm late, but still people having been saying that. Lol

I think the best symbol of Nikki's confusion about time travel in the show is the broken compass, as previously mentioned. Richard gave it to Locke (after Locke was shot in the leg by Ethan) and then Locke went back in time to the 1950s and gave it to Richard, who presumably held onto it for 50 years until that point where he gave it to Locke. This possibly forms a paradoxical time loop, because the compass seemingly came from nowhere originally. However it is possible that it was Richard's originally and he just ended up with two instances of the exact same compass, one 50 years older than the other, so that wouldn''t be a paradox. If we except that time traveling is a thing that exists in this universe, then what we've seen so far can be explained without it being a paradox. Locke can time travel and therefore Future Locke can go back in time and tell past Richard to visit past Locke as a child. There is no 'which came first', because one of the people involved has been displaced from their regular timestream. The fact that Richard doesn't appear to age at all obviously complicates the whole thing, but that's another matter entirely.

Hermione howled and distracted the Lupin both times we saw it we just didn't know it was her the first time. Everything we see is the only time it happened. Nothing has changed.
