It's perceived as bad? I really love it, the narrative is genius and I will always celebrate episodes that give a different perspective on situations that we've already seen, it was really cool seeing the island events from their point of view. I mean yeah sure it doesn't push the overall narrative forward and doesn't resolve any mystery, so people watching it live must have hated it - but as far as writing goes (the murder mystery), and production (having to plan or refilm the "past" events to include a different perspective), this episode is masterful.

Exposé is undoubtedly a filler episode but in my opinion it is far from being a wasted episode. The writers, at the very least, made good use of two disposable characters to tell a story which does shine a new perpective on the show's core themes. All of our LOST characters have bad pasts or at least were extremely troubled, and most so far have begun using their time here to learn and grow. In working to live together so to survive and not 'die alone' they have realised the importance of bettering themselves to further better the whole society. Nikki & Paulo, on the other hand, were great examples of other characters who have not seized this opportunity to do the same - and there could be more like them we never got to meet. Instead of moving forward from their past, as Paulo wants to, Nikki gives into her greed - and by work of poetic justice - it gets the better of them. Instead of sharing information with the group, as neither Paulor or Nikki do (about finding the hatches and especially overhearing Ben's plan) they keep the information to themselves and in a way fail to prevent one of the greatest Trojan horse moments (ie. Michael) which the Others pull off on our characters. And again here too, by not sharing information they know (particularly about Arzt and the spiders etc.) they too are the the main cause for their own demise as our LOSTies were never made partial to the knowledge of what *really* killed them. In the end, by focusing on their past issues and focusing on living alone, they ultimately end up dying alone. Jack said it perfectly in 1x05 White Rabbit - and this episode is a reminder of exactly all the better choices, for the most part, made in contrast by our main LOSTies.

@@annythekettle7031 Star Wars is probably the most glaring hole in their group's pop culture awareness, some of them never seen it till only recently when they started doing reactions to it. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they fall in this very specific small generational slice: post VHS generation, but pre-Prequel/Clone Wars generation where Star Wars was on a bit of a break in terms of pop cultural relevance. Of course Star Wars is evergreen, but during that time, you really had to go out of your way to be a young kid and be a fan. Like you had to have taken the initiative to tell your parents to buy you VHS copies of the trilogy (which I'm sure a lot of parents weren't thrilled about, buying 3 movies for VHS which was expensive at the time, and maybe might have denied a lot of potential kid fans). I remember growing up, I went to a very large school, and I was one of the very very few Star Wars fans back then. A decade or more prior and all the kids in those classrooms would've all been Star Wars fans. A decade or so forward, post Prequels and till now, and kids in general are all at least aware of Star Wars, enough for most to recognize Lando (at least the type of kids that would watch a show like Lost). But there's this 10 year gap where if you were a kid/teen growing up, like a lot of the Normies are of that age, that Star Wars simply was one of those things that passed most ppl my/their age by.

First of all, anyone who doesn't love "razzle dazzle" is soul-less. Having a stripper yell razzle dazzle while kung fu kicking a gun out of a thug's hand with Billy Dee Williams is pretty much 100% awesome. Second, this episode is an amazing combination of comedy and darkness. All of the hilarious behind the scenes bits (everything that Paulo and Nicky knew weeks before the main cast), contrasted with all of the foreshadowing ("promise me we won't end up like those two" when looking at two soon to be dead cast mates) leading up to the terrifying buried alive scenario. This episode was brilliant when first aired, but gets better when re-watching. It's not mythos heavy, but it's a fantastic stand alone episode. Third (and not spoilers), this is not the last you see of Nicky. You have to be very quick to spot but there are several future references to Nicky. It helps to know that her name was Nicky Fernandez. She's actually important to the meta plot. It helps if you caught that sound that proceeded Nicky getting bit. After she finds the diamonds , you can hear a familiar sound that proceeds the arrival of the male spiders. Just hold onto that nugget for about 2.5 seasons. Originally, Nicky and Paulo where brought on to boost the show and Nicky in particular was supposed to have a much bigger part in the overall plot. Supposedly she was going to at least as big as Echo was supposed to be (before that actor asked to be written off) but the immediate negative reaction to her character lead the writers to kill the lovers off quickly.

One of the best and most original episodes of the series I have ever seen. And I mean that sincerely. Paulo is portrayed by Rodrigo Santoro, who was a regular on "Westworld". I never understood the hostility toward Nikki and Paulo. I mean, Arzt wasn't introduced until near the end of Season One. I don't recall anyone complaining about that. I had no problems with Charlie's confession to Sun. By confessing, he at least avoided a slap from Sun. Sawyer got what he had deserved.

Paolo had many options to help the survivors but he was too attached to losing Nikki. Nikki actually starts to open up and offer to help the other islanders but it's too late when they are told they are next they have been judged as being bad. There is a running theme with this season starting with Eko who belived he did good deeds whith the life he was handed in the end, nikki, poalo are the oposite they had chances and failed to do something about it and "something" killed them. I don't know if you can see the spider in the grave or was it an extra? Has Charlie truly become a good man?

It was fun experiencing this episode vicariously through these ladies because god knows I didn't have such a good experience personally back in the day. 2:11 I guess what helped was that they got cryptic feedback from spoiler-phobe Nahid and not from spoil(er)sport Suraj.

They got the ending they deserved. Paulo was a little naive and he was being used, but he still killed a dude to steal his money. Good episode, but Nikki & Paulo were the least sympathetic characters on a show where killers and conmen can become heroes, hence the audience wanting their heads.

Suraj's HEAVY sarcasm in the description and the Hate this ep gets is VERY unfounded imo. I personally LOVE this episode. I think it's great. Have since the week we first saw it air live back when the show was first on and every time I've seen it since.

To me it is after this episode that LOST just takes off and continuously gives great episode after great episode or at least very good episodes all the way to the serious finale.

The fans actually didn't make this episode happen. That's just a widely believed, but incorrect, rumor. The writers had already written this episode before the fans ever saw Nikki and Paulo and started complaining about them.

source ? because unless some Mandela effect is in I remember the writers talking on abc podcast which was like newer post show content then. Maybe I can check with JayNJack ...I thought creators said they were trying to lock a series end date and with writers strike they did decide too take these characters in different direction. Some parts written but reworked.

I didn't mind that it was kind of a stand alone episode, like a tribute to Stephen King. I actually loved see all the old characters like Boone, Shannon and Leslie Arzt. After re-watching this episode, it reminded me also of the Xbox 360 game LOST Via Domas game which was released between seasons 2 and 3. You don't get to play any of the main characters, but you interact with them. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c5Z8stCGj8jXcbA.html
