It's eerie that i watched this video yesterday - hours before the World Cup final. Considering the parallels between '99 and this year it just goes to show you that when it matters most, Australia just have it in their DNA - when you wear Gold you play winning cricket and that's exactly what happened in Ahmedabad. Probably the greatest showcase of captaincy, bowling and fielding in a high stakes game - you don't have to be the best team everyday, just the best team on the days that matter most

So true. India played some unbelievable cricket this last tournament too. It's true they didn't win the final, but they should hold their heads up high. They dominated every match leading up to that last one. But of course Australia just know how to dig deep in the most unfavourable conditions, which make them the most dangerous team to play.

We dont have what it takes to be winners..If we couldn’t win with this team..which was arguably the best indian team ever..we will never win..There is something wrong with how we are training our players..Honestly,i m just impressed by aussies fighting spirit and determination..They are truly champions and they prove it time nd again..

What a team. A side full of winners. The late 90's to mid to late 00's was an amazing time to be an Aussie cricket fan.

Totally. Remember that period well. A team full of some of the greatest players Australia produced in their history. Most opposing sides probably just looked at who was wearing the baggy green and were already beaten before they stepped onto the field. Not a single weak link amongst their starting elevens in that period. If I had to pick the best XI, personally it was the Ashes team in 2001: Hayden, Langer, Ponting, M.Waugh, Martyn, S. Waugh, Gilchrist, Warne, Lee, Gillespie, McGrath.

In WC 2023, Australia lost 1st match to India, beat them in the finals. Lost 2nd match to South Africa, beat them in the semis. Classic Australia. Players changed,but stories are the same. Love you Team Australia

The reason Australia are dominant in world Cricket today, is because they give it their all for their country, they have a sense of team spirit. I remember when Merv Hughes (my apologies if i butchered the spelling) was balling and it was a tight situation, he managed to injure himself after a particular delivery, and when his team mates ran towards him to check if he was ok, his first question was - Did we get him? !!!!.....that was and still is the dedication to the cause by the Australian team.....whereas we Indians, think its all about records and numbers and statistics.....which in my humble opinion should be a reflection of your effort not the other way around......

That Australian team of the late 90s-early to mid 00s was just disgustingly good. When your worst batsman in the test team is Damian Martyn (a guy who averaged 47 IIRC) you are ridiculous! Plus they usually only selected 4 out and out bowlers. Of course this ODI team was just as dominant evidenced by winning 3 WC in a row.

True, the 1990s team was the first one to beat West Indies in a test series in more than 15 years and McGrath was only playing like the 2nd series of his career.

How have I never seen this channel? This is superb, mate. I am here just after the 2023 WC final, and the situations were so very similar. Terrible preparation and a team no one expected to do anything. They lose their first two, and Cummins was under threat by a media landscape still torn by Langer's sacking. They simply had to be perfect. And they were. Their fielding exemplified this, with its crescendo when Head was laid out across deep cover after taking a spectacular catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma. It will always be my fondest moment of the campaign, just like Mark Waugh's catch in the 99 final.

Waughs, Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist.. that team had some legendary characters😅

To think that chasing 170-odd in under 20 overs of an ODI shows how much tonk the '99 team really had. That's a fair score to chase in any T20 match these days.

I saw this video of yours a month back. Seems to be surreal coming back here today after Australia finally complete the cycle.

I still shake my head with those three wickets from Warne. He was a genius, who excelled on the biggest stages. The mark of a true champion.

As they say bully were once bullied. Respect for Australia. This match was my first match of my life. I was 8 years old and i always wanted to ball like warne. I still remember the glimpses when i watched that day.

I remember watching the semi-final Aus vs SAF live on satellite TV, that late night was worth it. Fond memories. Absolute scenes at the end and my favourite ODI of all time.

Absolutely agreed with you. This is the result of lack of investment in white ball cricket after the 2015 CWC. Sacking JL was not a good decision either, they've wanted a nicest coach and a captain and they've got both in McDonald and Cummins.

Gutsy is something the present squad is not. That has been Australia's most defining quality. I like Cummins he is really hard working but he isn't ruthless like former Australian captains. But I hope he grows into the role more.

@@stevez2309 Yeah, Cummins is a very defensive captain. He is just there for the media, he is the captain cause he addresses the media well. JL taught us to play ruthless on his tenure, he was not the nicest coach but was delivering wins for the team. McDonald is probably the worst Aussie coach ever. Cummins is probably the worst Aussie tactical captain ever. Need someone like Smith in the leadership role and Punte or Haydos in the supporting staff role.

I was in prison at 19 in 99. Two huge muscle head guys pulled me aside and quietly but firmly told me to stfu at night and if I didn't people would find me twisted into a pretzel. I remember "Donald didn't run!" and having to stfu, ha. What a year in Aussie sport.

AUSTRALIAN TEAM WAS VERY STRONG BETWEEN 1999 WC SF TO 2007 WC FINAL....🏏🏏🏏

In that 1999 World Cup, I remember India-Australia match in the super-six, it was a make or break match for both the teams. I was super eager to see the Tendulkar-McGrath contest. McGrath's first over to Tendulkar left me spell-bound. McGrath removed Tendulkar in his first over, Rahul Dravid in his next over and the Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin in his 3rd over. He literally ripped the heart of Indian batting line up and pretty much sealed the match. I also remember, prior to this World Cup match, Sachin Tendulkar tore apart the Aussie attack in all the previous 5 or 6 ODI matches they played against each other which also included his Sharjah desert storm (Tendulkar's scores in the previous 6 ODI matches against Aus were 100 off 89 balls, 15 off 24 balls, 80 off 72 balls, 143 off 131 balls, 134 off 131 balls, 143 off 128 balls). There was one huge caveat though - Glenn McGrath & also Jason Gillespie who was Australia's then second leading fast bowler after McGrath, both were absent in all those matches.

Bevan really doesn't get enough credit for how good he was in a team that is arguably the best we've ever fielded. Also Steve Waugh must have haaaated that West Indies crowd lol

Riot. How was West Indies not banned for a decade to host any cricket event let alone allowed to host 2 whole ICC events in 2007 and 2010 WC is beyond me. But but Pakistan isn't safe to visit smfh

Great podcast. One thing I would mention was the Shane Warne Saga. The man who for much of 90's had been Australia's own X-Factor. But, by the end of the decade, the wear and tear was getting to him. In particular that tour to The West Indies, and the manner in which Brian Lara targeted him. Leading to Steve Waugh dropping him for the final test. Something the spinner felt bitter about even two decades later. Which is what made him so dangerous in the closing stages. Warne was a genius, and a proven 'big match' player. This we all knew. But now, he felt he had a point to prove. Cue his (in my opinion) greatest ODI spell ever, and a performance that counteracted, and ultimately superseded South Africa's own megastar.

Throughout his career Warne would have these periods where the wear and tear got to him. But he got breaks that helped him. That 2003 scandal with the diet pills actually helped him because he got away from cricket, likewise being dropped in 1999 probably helped get his mind away from cricket.

Steve Waugh has won more World cups than Shane Warne on his own, 1987 with his bowling and who can forget his big hitting 18 runs in the semifinal last over. He single-handedly took Australia to semifinal in 1999 and scored valuable runs in the Semi as well. Steve turned the fortunes of Australian cricket, Ashes 1989, 1995 Australia West Indies, he was the main of the series when the West Indies dominance ended in the '95 series and Australia dominated world cricket for the next decade. Warne was surely one of the catalysts but Waugh's contribution is not hyped much mostly by those who don't have much of Cricketing history in their heads.

@@Remen-tj3ph Waugh was regarded as a legend during his career, but for some reason the cricketing world seems to remember the Ponting era team more vividly. Ponting winning two World Cups without losing a game and doing so in 2003 against India in the final I think is part of the reason. Ask most people other than perhaps the English who the great Australian players were over the last 30 years and they will say Ponting, Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath and for some reason Indians rate Brett Lee very highly, even though Gillespie had much more test success against them.

Best prodcast on Australia's rise to the top after 1999. I wanted them to win 99 WC at that time and boy those two scud missiles by Klusener off Fleming almost give me a heart attack. Besides AUS 99 WC success, Klusener deserved the player of the tournament.

Knocking out NZ wasn't about knocking out a rival. Points from group only carried forward vs other teams in super 6 stage. So if WI qualified over NZ, they'd go into super 6 with 1 win 1 loss, if NZ qualified 0 wins 2 losses.

To be honest, I think it's about both - your comment is the other side of the same coin. Those things only would have occurred had Australia and the Windies created a way to knock out NZ. If you read the match reports from NZ's next game vs Scotland, much of it is coloured by what happened in this AUS v WI match - even to the extent where NZ supporters were said to have been booing mentions of Australia in the post match formalities! More recently, both Brian Lara and Steve Waugh have alluded that they might've been trying to create an advantageous result for themselves (but not in collusion). While I don't doubt that Steve Waugh would have treated any other team in that position, the same way (that's the ruthless mindset I was talking about), NZ is always a rival to Australia, even if it's more friendly than others. Events like these are always viewed by both countries with the knowledge of what has happened before between the two, like the underarm incident for example. It's makes everything more spicy! Thanks for adding more to the story, and giving me the chance to give some further insight. Cheers for watching! :)

It was definitely not both. Australia only cared about taking those points through to the super 6. They were crucial. Had nothing to do with NZ.

A bit of Deja Vu. This year, they lost the first two games but still went on to win.

We are in 2023 and Australia is still the strongest. Australia was at 10 in the beginning. They were 97 for 5 at one moment and boom in adverse conditions they showed their character again.

1999: you had the greatest Test match in my lifetime (WI v Australia, 3rd Test, Barbados) and then the best ODI I've seen in the form of the WC SF detailed here. What a time to be alive.

I was just 6 years old in 1999 and I was introduced to cricket by my mum just 1 or 2 years before I believe. 99 WC was my first WC and continued to watch WC even after IND got out of it. I still remember we both watched that semi final and we were too upset to the fate of SA. That felt like salt on injury. Still even today, I feel for them. It would be better if they got out early or they couldn't get close to that margin. And we felt the final became too easy for AUS. And we both stopped cricket after 2015 WC as our idols and legends of the 90s in all of the teams were retired, IND lifted WC and it was a complete circle for me. Starting cricket watching AUS winning and ending watching AUS winning. The another important reason that made us to stop was the t20. It took over the game, test cricket became less valued. The t20 killed the game.

It still is in today's time, mostly in world cups. It's just not easy to chase 250+ in a high pressure world cup except if the pitch is flat. Afghanistan defeating England by 69 runs shows how crucial it can be to even just surpass 250+.

Cricket was very competitive in the 90's between alot of nations.

One of the best cricket stories i have heard , though i hardly watch any , still the analysis of Ausssie's comeback with ever more determintion haunted other teams and other fans for next decade and a half
