What I saw on the train, I thought was a homeless man. It turned out the man was deceased and no one noticed. Don't know how long he was there but when the train got to the next stop, I ran out and told a police officer, he told me, don't worry about it. When I got outside, I called 911 and told them there was a dead man on the train. They told me, Thank you and have a nice day. This is why I hate riding the Metro trains.

What I hate the most about this is that all sides from the metro, local governments, police departments, and even the people of LA really aren't interested in the Metro system despite demanding alternatives to the car. The B Line to me is one of the best lines because it gets you to some of the most iconic and heavy congestion parts of the city. Unfortunately, the last time I took it, it felt like I was on the set of the Last of Us. People sleeping around and smelling like a portable restroom at a music festival. And it was on the Super Bowl day when I thought it was gonna get busy due to people heading out to bars and restaurants and not wanting to drive due to the amount of alcohol they would be drinking. It's a damn shame that the Metro is in a state like this and the city is blowing it. Hopefully, they see this and actually do something as the Metro lines will be key for a better future for the city. Especially if they're gonna be hosting huge sporting events like the World Cup and the Olympics. If I were the agency, guarantee I'll make major changes.

Thank you for making this video, and especially for calling to action at the end. I’m living in the Bronx, NY where our subway system, a ‘model for the nation’, doubles as an informal shelter system for our unhoused, addicted and mentally ill. I’m not blind to the extent of the homelessness crisis in CA, but in the last few years it’s devolved into nothing short of a national humanitarian crisis. The way I see it, even one single homeless person is a monumental policy failure, and a catastrophic loss of human potential. But look at the values and institutions we have enshrined in our society, and it’s plain and simple why we have so much needless suffering. We need in this country a moral reckoning, because this is nothing to walk by with our sons and daughters, acting like it’s just the way things are supposed to be. Far from it. Keep making these videos, exposing our brutal realities and demanding change, and if they ignore our pleas, take change! In taking action, we will all get to a better place, I know it.

The reason the people who run the station finally finally cracked down on the homeless was a massive bedbug flea and lice infestation. And those bugs jumped on the clothes of the employees and traveled home with the employees. So finally they put up those barriers around the seats. It’s a very functional necessity a hundreds of thousands of people use it every day. You can even get direct buses to airports in Bakersfield and Orange County there.

I used to ride the metro red line frequently with my family back in the 90s, all the stations were clean, smelled fresh, I would always take deep breaths when the train was approaching the station because there was a certain smell and it smelled great! it’s worse than it was back then, for sure, but the worst it’s ever been was probably 2020-2022. the pandemic causing low ridership helped underlying problems surface and things got worse much more quickly than before, but Metro has been stepping up focus on safety, mostly since March 2023, and I can say it’s been getting better and better since then, but from a previously very bad place for sure. For one note not from my own anecdote, an article in late October stated that ridership had jumped 10%, and crime had dropped 53% in the 6 months previous.

@@unitedfederalnations3761Indeed. The improvements are noticeable. One of the reasons so many homeless started using LA Metro during the 3 years of 2020, 2021, and 2022 was because LA Metro decided that they wouldn't enforce fares during the worst of Covid. They finally rescinded that policy in 2023. It will take several more months to get to pre-pandemic levels.

I have lived in Los Angeles all 49 years of my life. The problem is not just the homeless. There are those who are 100% violent mean people preying on the weak all day every day. There are mentally ill who are instantly triggered by even the slightest of your movement or eye contact. I was attacked there several times. At some point they will find you. MTA Los Angeles used to be policed by the LA County Sheriff's Department and had way more resources and so many more officers to deal with the problems. The problem is not that LAPD does not know what they are doing. The problem is they do not have enough personnel AND have to constantly find ways to tip toe around certain racial types to avoid lawsuits and or escalating situation just by interacting with those of a certain racial background... nobody is allowed to say it. If anybody out there has listened to MTA Board meetings, you will hear at many points how much contempt MTA Board Members and LA City Councilmembers have for law enforcement. Now they have these unarmed "Transit Ambassadors" who stand around with their face jammed into their smartphones trying to pass the time while the world around them falls into chaos and people are being victimized. There are reasons why people want out of Los Angele and public transportation is not just inadequate, it is inherently prone to allow thugs to operate.

I've once walked throughout DTLA including iconic Union Station (LAUPT) during the '60's when people were more respectful & the homeless stayed out of sight. No one gets jailed for vagrancy or public intoxication anymore-that behavior was acceptable only in Skid Row back then which is approx. 1 mile from LAUPT. The jails are too full with violent criminals & the violently insane-the L.A. County Jail is a few blocks from the station on Bauchet St. A nurse was beaten & killed last year at a bus stop in front of East LAUPT. The pandemic impacted everyone while the homeless were free to shelter in place. We live in a democratic society where people are given the right to make their own decisions. Some have accepted assistance & rehabilitation while others prefer to live freely & cannot abide by rules. There's no easy fix for this situation. Drug abuse &/or mental illness is the root cause for much of this. I've worked in these environments & the odors are horrendous.

It looks like the station is being used as free housing for the mentally ill and addicted. I wonder if there are alternative buildings that can be used as a public shelter. Metro ridership is terrible and it’s partly because of this and partly because of the underdeveloped areas surrounding the stations. LA has to keep pushing to clean this up and build TOD to make the metro useful. Otherwise, the most effective use of these stations (which are worth billions of dollars btw) are as homeless shelters.

The Artesia A (Blue) Line Station is seriously worse. Metro 130 decided to split their popular one-seat ride from Redondo Beach to Cerritos (Fullerton until Christmas 2003). Torrance Transit and Long Beach transit settled on Artesia station over Harbor Gateway Transit Center (where LBT intended to split the 130 and adopt the eastern half of the route as their proposed Artesia Crosstowns, now Line 141*), as Torrance accused Long Beach of duplicating their Line 6 (which is younger than Line 130, which started in 1976). One week before Line 130 (or what was left of it) became LBT 141, I was almost attacked by an African American male while I was taking photographs of the new signs for 141 (which were installed days before). I got on the train for safety and ended up in another part of town. I am definitely ready to save for a car. *Long Beach Transit was intending to still call Metro's former Line 130 "Long Beach Transit Route 130". However, due to Long Beach Transit's route name theming based on streets, they did not want passengers to think that an Artesia Bl route (Metro 130) was about Redondo Av (called Route 131). They renamed Metro's 130 to LBT 141 as a result. Route 161 was considered as the new name. P.S. Long Beach Transit, ironically, had plans to split Line 130 at the Artesia station over 20 years ago. LBT wanted to acquire the eastern half of the 130 (from Artesia station to Fulleton), and the entirety of Line 128 (when it serviced Fullerton), as their routes.

The LA Metro is much better today. It's been improving over the last year. They've hired more security guards, cleaning crews, and transit ambassadors. You need to purchase a TAP card that costs $2 and add money to it. Last year, LA Metro switched to a capped fare system. It will cost you a maximum of $5 a day or $18 per week. The cost is $1.75 for a one-way ride with a 2 hour window of free transfers. Once you spend $5 in a day or $18 in a week, all your additional rides are free whether you use the light rail lines, subway lines, or bus lines. It's all one system referred to as the LA Metro. It's a little different from cities like NYC, Paris, or London, where Metro means subway lines only. Have a good time in LA. Don't be afraid to explore, but also be smart and informed.

San Fernando Valley resident here: A rather dark video, but it's not as dangerous as you're trying to portray. First, all that time you spent in the stairways of the subway stations is misleading. I've ridden the subway many times, and not once have I used those stairways. Riders wouldn't even know where they are. I've probably seen the doors but not once decided to go through them. The only time one would use them is if the station was on fire and you had to escape. In looking at your video, I didn't see the subway stations on fire, so really, you had no business going in them. As far as transients on the trains, that's a problem, but the incidents you showed was an aberration. I've never seen anyone lying on their back on the seats like they're dead. But really, if they cleaned out the trains of all passengers every time a train reached the end of the line and then went the other way, transients wouldn't be on the trains going back and forth all day. The last time I was on the subway was this past Saturday. It was fairly clean with some transients, but they're not going to kill you. As far Los Angeles being unsafe, it's not any more unsafe than an average U.S. city. The reason I say that is I've lived here almost all my life, and I'm still alive. Not once have I've been harmed or robbed. That said, tourists and residents can't be too careless, but that's true everywhere.

Los Angeles needs to upzone the whole city. We're in a well-documented housing shortage yet we've arbitrarily made it illegal to build more homes on 75% of the city's land. That's insane. It's why we have high rent prices, the worst overcrowding in the country, and mass homelessness here.

This is simply not a complete portrayal of Union Station. There are definitely major issues the city is not addressing, however you’re not giving the whole picture. You entered Union Station through the back entrance. You only shot at one time of day. And you even mentioned a staircase “you’re not supposed to be in.” I get your message, but it’s bad journalism.

Those staircases are emergency exits. I’m pretty sure it’s fair to make everyone aware that if you have to escape a fire through those stairs you’re going to encounter slipping 💩 hazards. And I’m not a journalist lol

Yes, the emergency stairwells you were not supposed to be in were filthy but it doesn't mean you couldn't get out of there in case of an emergency. This video has a complete negative bias. Its laughable. First, almost no one comes into Union Station from the side this dude did. Second, he went into the emergency exit areas which no one goes into except, I guess, homeless and this dude. Third, you do have more homeless on the trains because of Covid. LA Metro was not enforcing fares during Covid. That started changing in 2023. They have started a couple of new programs to deal with both safety and security issues as of May 2023. Fourth, if yoy pay attention, you see the actual stations and trains are relatively clean. LA Metro just opened three new stations in DTLA last month. And it continue to grow and improve. BTW, nany of the worst issues with the homeless have only happened since Covid in 2020 and LA is not alone in this issue. This video only shows the sad truth, but that's the minority of the complete truth.

Democracy means rule by the people. The word comes from the ancient Greek words 'demos' (the people) and 'kratos' (to rule). A democratic country has a system of government where people have the power to participate in decision-making.
