Wouldn't crooks just scratch the numbers off??? ?????

This has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. Super easy to remove the number and get rid of it at a recycler. If you want to fix the problem regulate the recycler and make it a criminal offense to except catalytic converters from anyone that isn’t a licensed scrap dealer! Take away these thieves market and then they nowhere to fence the stollen property. Problem solved.

Obviously, but CA is completely blue. This is one is to obvious and easy fix. I believe they will go with funny approach, like creating license for angle grinder operators. Plus permits for sale.

How can there be an increase in catalytic converter thefts when newsom just signed a law to "stop" the thefts?

I don't think you know the definition or meaning of deterent or prevention. Both those don't mean 'STOP'. Laws are obstacles with consequences. They only work if people get caught.

What a waste of time and money! You have to hit the scrap metal joints where they sell them these guys don't go in with one they go in with 10 -20 the scrap yards know their stealing them but take them anyway, you stop the scrap yards from being allow to take them the crime stops.

That's if she wasn't prosecuted, heard of cases in my area where owners/victims were prosecuted for attacking the thieves either physically or with a firearm, the thieves are protected by CORRUPTIVE laws and a broken system, why aren't City Leaders GOVERNMENT POLITICIANS LAW ENFORCEMENT and RECYCLING CENTERS MANUFACTURERS doing anything to STOP ALL THIS and it's ongoing For many Years now, WHAT IS BEING DONE???

Yes it's true! But what they didn't mention is that when you go to sell it if the number is scratched the place is not allowed to buy it just like a gun with a serial number.

Ok, it is a small step in the right direction. But who is going to sit around and wait for a stolen catalytic converter to be returned to them? Could be years. It may get a thief caught in the long run, but it won't save the victimized car owner any money. He / she will buy a replacement regardless.
