Ben Cartwright, the patriarch of the clan, was one of the best. He was played masterfully by Lorne Greene. The unassuming Canadian actor was raised by immigrant parents who taught him the value of love and silence. His world changed forever when the producers of Bonanza took notice of his talent. They were impressed when he guest starred on an episode of Wagon Train.
He, in turn, changed the show forever. He threatened to quit after the first 16 episodes unless the writers turned Ben into a loving and three-dimensional character. They listened, and the 2nd-most-popular TV dad of all time was born.
The show became a massive hit that earned Lorne a staggering amount of money. He used it to build a replica of the show’s ranch and used the recognition to release several successful albums.
What set Lorne apart was that the massive fame and fortune he accumulated never went to his head. He still found time to raise his children and is remembered fondly by everyone he encountered.
Lorne died of pneumonia after an aneurysm surgery, and his funeral was proof of the impact he had on the world. It was meant to be a small service, but the chapel overflowed with mourners. Many of them had to listen to it outside through loudspeakers.
Lorne also earned plenty of awards and accolades throughout his career and after his death. He’s got a star on both the American and Canadian Walk of Fame and even has his face on a Canadian postage stamp. Like and subscribe for more on the life and death of the biggest western TV icons. Watch our video to learn why Lorne Greene’s funeral is proof of his incredible legacy.

Lorne Greene was the fatherly and grandfatherly figure for men to imitate due to his strong and endearing qualities that he brought to the characters that he played. I can't imagine Ben Cartwright being played by anyone other than Lorne Greene and as Admiral Odama in Battlestar Galactica he seemed to have the weight of all humanity on his shoulders but he was like a Ben Cartwright in outer space. But his private life surely showed his character especially when being involved in helping animals. An exceptional man.

I have watched many " Bonanza " episodes and what I admired about the series was that there were no ' copy cat ' actors. Each one had their own personalities. And it wasn't always about fighting and gunplay. Some episodes were humorous about helping people instead of killing them. A TRUE MASTERPIECE OF A PROGRAM !

Lorne Greene was a very good actor in his time ! The episode of Wagon Train, Battlestar Galactica and Bonanza I watched and a few other movies he played in. Those are the ones I caught a glimpse of him and recognize him. One night I wanted to see a science fiction series or a science fiction movie, and too my surprise there was Battlestar Galactica. And I said okay I can do this and that I did ! I didn't get to say this but rest in peace Ben Cartwright.

Not a Bonanza guy, myself... bit before me, really. Battlestar? That's more my speed and era... The OG version of Commander Adama! Also remember his part on Roots and his classic Alpo commercials! Code Red was a fave of mine as a lil kid, too! I recall he had a nature show, too. I'd confuse him with Marlin Perkins and my dad would laugh and correct me! lol! Good times, good times!!

Bonanza was the Swiss Army knife of tv shows …. Sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic…. Always a great show As for Mr. Green, I think Ben Cartwright over a period of time became more like Loren. Too bad Gunsmoke was on a different network…. I think it’d been so cool for Marshal Dillion to pass through Virginia city….

Usually people who turn out compassionate and kind experienced compassion and kindness early on. Most serial killers and violent offenders were horribly abused as children. It's interesting how it's taken the authorities, government, social services, etc, so long to connect the dots. A good case in point is that back in the 70s and 80s serial killers like John Wayne Gasey, Ted Bundy, and The Hill Side Strangler, etc were commonplace compared to today. I suppose if I connect the dots myself all this makes sense because I clearly remember walking around Hollywood with my father as a child around 1977 78 and seeing girls as young as 13 selling themselves on the street corners. You don't see that anymore and serial killers are rare today.
